The role of passion in the quality-value-satisfaction-intentions chain: linear models and the QCA approach for athletes
2019
The aim of this research is to determine the role of passion on future intentions, perceived value, and athletes’ satisfaction in relation to participatory sport events by combining two methodological approaches: linear models and qualitative comparative analysis (QCA). A sample of participatory sporting event athletes (n = 302) was analysed. The results suggest that there is a direct effect of harmonic passion (HP) on future intentions (FI), value (PV) and satisfaction (AS) and a direct effect of obsessive passion (OP) on satisfaction. Considering the indirect effects, both interactions were significant for the effect of perceived quality (PQ) and perceived value on satisfaction. In additi…
Explaining User Experience in Mobile Gaming Applications: An fsQCA Approach
2019
Purpose In the complex ecosystem of mobile applications multiple factors have been used to explain users’ behavior, without though focusing on how different combinations of variables may affect user behavior. The purpose of this paper is to show how price value, game content quality, positive and negative emotions, gender and gameplay time interact with each other to predict high intention to download mobile games. Design/methodology/approach Building on complexity theory, the authors present a conceptual model followed by research propositions. The propositions are empirically validated through configurational analysis, employing fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) on 531 a…
Revisiting bank failure in the United States: a fuzzy-set analysis
2020
Past financial crises have illustrated the importance of recognising the combinations of factors that can cause financial distress in the banking industry. Accordingly, this study uses fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) to identify the combinations of factors that lead to bank failure. The data consist of 30 annual financial ratio series for 156 U.S. banks over a 15-year period (2001–2015). Identifying combinations of conditions that can produce bank failure is crucial to help regulators and bank managers. The fsQCA presented in this paper sheds light on the relationships between combinations of conditions and bank failure, providing a solution comprising two sufficient and …
Work–Family Practices and Complexity of Their Usage: A Discourse Analysis Towards Socially Responsible Human Resource Management
2020
AbstractThe question of work–family practices commonly arises in both theory and daily practice as a matter of responsibility in today’s organisations. More information is needed about them for socially responsible human resource management (SR-HRM). In this article our interest is in how work–family practices, serve as an important element of SR-HRM, constructed as (un)helpful for employees’ work–family integration, are realised in organisational life. We investigate the discursive ways in which members of two different organisations working at different organisational levels construct the issue in the Finnish context. Three discourses were interpreted: (1) a discourse of compliance with e…
The experience of knowledge in everyday accounting: a study of Finnish accounting managers
1995
The paper offers an ethnomethodological-phenomenological description of the everyday cost accountant's life-world in Finnish companies. This empirical study is based on qualitative research interviews which provide rich data on this phenomenon and offer a starting-point for interpretation. As a result of interpretation a picture emerges of how the everyday accountant seems to acquire the experience of knowledge. ‘The experience of knowledge’ is used to refer to ethnomethodological-phenomenological perspective which means that the constitution of practical accounting knowledge is seen as an accomplishment which is based on an individual sense-making process. This process and its elements are…
Constructions of EU Europe and National EU Concepts – A Research Agenda
2012
In the last years, European identity has become a key issue for theory development as well as for quantitative and qualitative research in the social sciences (see the contributions of Westle and Datler et al. in this volume). Analysing European identity touches upon three related areas: 1) people identifying with Europe/the European Union (EU) and attributing meaning to it (individual/micro-level), 2) the aggregate effects of these individual orientations (macrolevel), and 3) the shared meanings people associate with Europe/the EU and identify with (macro-level).
Challenges and Solutions in Ethnographic Research
2020
Challenges and Solutions in Ethnographic Research: Ethnography with a Twist seeks to rethink ethnography ‘outside the box’ of its previous tradition and to develop ethnographic methods by critically discussing the process, ethics, impact and knowledge production in ethnographic research. This interdisciplinary edited volume argues for a ‘twist’ that supports openness, courage, and creativity to develop and test innovative and unconventional ways of thinking and doing ethnography. ‘Ethnography with a twist’ means both an intentional aim to conduct ethnographic research with novel approaches and methods but also sensitivity to recognize and creativity to utilize different kinds of ‘twist mome…
