[Background and Aims] Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is a common cause of chronic liver disease. Clinical trials use the NASH Clinical Research Network (CRN) system for semiquantitative histological assessment of disease severity. Interobserver variability may hamper histological assessment, and diagnostic consensus is not always achieved. We evaluate a second harmonic generation/two‐photon excitation fluorescence (SHG/TPEF) imaging‐based tool to provide an automated quantitative assessment of histological features pertinent to NASH.

Hepatitis C virus (HCV)-induced iron overload has been shown to promote liver fibrosis, steatosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma. The zonal-restricted histological distribution of pathological iron deposits has hampered the attempt to perform large-scale in vivo molecular investigations on the comorbidity between iron and HCV. Diagnostic and prognostic markers are not yet available to assess iron overload-induced liver fibrogenesis and progression in HCV infections. [EN] We present the concept of logic functions based on a single stimuli-responsive nanopore and analyze its potential for electrochemical transducers and actuators. The responsive molecules at the surface of the polymeric nanopore immersed in an electrolyte solution are sensitive to thermal, chemical, electrical, and optical stimuli, which are the input signals required to externally tune the conductance of the nanopore (the logical output). It is shown that the long-term response of an elastic-perfectly plastic solid subjected to dynamic actions cyclically varying in time is characterized by stresses, plastic strain rates and velocities that are all periodic with the same period of the external actions, and are in perfect analogy with the quasi-static case; on the other hand, plastic strains and displacements are in general nonperiodic (except in case of alternating plasticity) and may increase indefinitely (except when elastic or plastic shakedown occurs). Dynamic19F-MRI of pulmonary ventilation using sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) gas

A new method for dynamic imaging of pulmonary wash-in and wash-out kinetics of inhaled sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) gas was developed. Measurements at the fluorine-19 Larmor frequency were performed in pigs using a gradient echo pulse sequence with 0.5 ms echo time and a measurement time of 9.1 s per image. Dynamic MRI was performed during wash-in and wash-out of SF6 gas in mechanically ventilated porcine lungs. A postprocessing strategy was developed for quantitative determination of wash-out time constants in the presence of noise. Mean wash-out constants were 4.78 ± 0.48 breaths vs. 4.33 ± 0.76 breaths for left and right lung when ventilation was performed with low tidal volume, and 1.73 ± …

International audience; F2-isoprostanes (F2-isoPs) represent a new family of biomarkers for oxidative stress generated by free radical attack of membrane-bounded arachidonic acid. Esterified F2-isoPs can be found in tissue or plasma lipids whereas the free form F2-isoPs, hydrolyzed by phospholipase, is mainly present in body fluids. The extent of systematic damage due to oxidative stress within the body can be assessed by the determination of plasma or urine F2-isoPs. PED in 2021: a major update of the protein ensemble database for intrinsically disordered proteins

Abstract The Protein Ensemble Database (PED) (https://proteinensemble.org), which holds structural ensembles of intrinsically disordered proteins (IDPs), has been significantly updated and upgraded since its last release in 2016. The new version, PED 4.0, has been completely redesigned and reimplemented with cutting-edge technology and now holds about six times more data (162 versus 24 entries and 242 versus 60 structural ensembles) and a broader representation of state of the art ensemble generation methods than the previous version. We analyze structural and conformational properties in a simulated bead-spring model of a non-entangled, supercooled polymer melt. We explore the statics of the model via various structure factors, involving not only the monomers, but also the center of mass (CM). We find that the conformation of the chains and the CM-CM structure factor, which is well described by a recently proposed approximation [Krakoviack et al., Europhys. Lett. 58, 53 (2002)], remain essentially unchanged on cooling toward the critical glass transition temperature of mode-coupling theory.
