Roadmap on quantum nanotechnologies

2021

Quantum phenomena are typically observable at length and time scales smaller than those of our everyday experience, often involving individual particles or excitations. The past few decades have seen a revolution in the ability to structure matter at the nanoscale, and experiments at the single particle level have become commonplace. This has opened wide new avenues for exploring and harnessing quantum mechanical effects in condensed matter. These quantum phenomena, in turn, have the potential to revolutionize the way we communicate, compute and probe the nanoscale world. Here, we review developments in key areas of quantum research in light of the nanotechnologies that enable them, with a …

Stability of C60 and N@C60 under thermal and optical exposure

2015

N@C60, a nitrogen atom encapsulated in a fullerene shell, has an electron-nuclear spin system with outstanding coherence properties attractive for quantum computation. The stability of this molecule is known to be limited due to thermal escape of the nitrogen atom from the C60 cage but little is known about the stability towards optical excitation, which is one possible tool for an indirect scheme to manipulate and read out quantum information. Here, we report the results of a systematic study regarding thermal and optical effects on the stability of N@C60. The central result is that stability under intense laser irradiation can be obtained when the sample remains cooled below a certain tem…

Extending Quantum Links: Modules for Fiber‐ and Memory‐Based Quantum Repeaters

2020

We analyze elementary building blocks for quantum repeaters based on fiber channels and memory stations. Implementations are considered for three different physical platforms, for which suitable components are available: quantum dots, trapped atoms and ions, and color centers in diamond. We evaluate and compare the performances of basic quantum repeater links for these platforms both for present-day, state-of-the-art experimental parameters as well as for parameters that could in principle be reached in the future. The ultimate goal is to experimentally explore regimes at intermediate distances, up to a few 100 km, in which the repeater-assisted secret key transmission rates exceed the maxi…

Entanglement dynamics and relaxation in a few-qubit system interacting with random collisions

2008

The dynamics of a single qubit interacting by a sequence of pairwise collisions with an environment consisting of just two more qubits is analyzed. Each collision is modeled in terms of a random unitary operator with a uniform probability distribution described by the uniform Haar measure. We show that the purity of the system qubit as well as the bipartite and the tripartite entanglement reach time averaged equilibrium values characterized by large instantaneous fluctuations. These equilibrium values are independent of the order of collision among the qubits. The relaxation to equilibrium is analyzed also in terms of an ensemble average of random collision histories. Such average allows for…

On-chip quantum optical frequency comb sources

2018

Integrated optical frequency comb sources, based on nonlinear microring resonators, can be used to generate complex quantum states. In particular, we achieved multi-photon and high-dimensional entangled quantum states, as well as their coherent control.

Optical interface created by laser-cooled atoms trapped in the evanescent field surrounding an optical nanofiber.

2009

Trapping and optically interfacing laser-cooled neutral atoms is an essential requirement for their use in advanced quantum technologies. Here we simultaneously realize both of these tasks with cesium atoms interacting with a multi-color evanescent field surrounding an optical nanofiber. The atoms are localized in a one-dimensional optical lattice about 200 nm above the nanofiber surface and can be efficiently interrogated with a resonant light field sent through the nanofiber. Our technique opens the route towards the direct integration of laser-cooled atomic ensembles within fiber networks, an important prerequisite for large scale quantum communication schemes. Moreover, it is ideally su…

Retrieving Quantum Information with Active Learning

2019

Active learning is a machine learning method aiming at optimal design for model training. At variance with supervised learning, which labels all samples, active learning provides an improved model by labeling samples with maximal uncertainty according to the estimation model. Here, we propose the use of active learning for efficient quantum information retrieval, which is a crucial task in the design of quantum experiments. Meanwhile, when dealing with large data output, we employ active learning for the sake of classification with minimal cost in fidelity loss. Indeed, labeling only 5% samples, we achieve almost 90% rate estimation. The introduction of active learning methods in the data a…

Quantum scrambling via accessible tripartite information

2023

Quantum information scrambling (QIS), from the perspective of quantum information theory, is generally understood as local non-retrievability of information evolved through some dynamical process, and is often quantified via entropic quantities such as the tripartite information. We argue that this approach comes with a number of issues, in large part due to its reliance on quantum mutual informations, which do not faithfully quantify correlations directly retrievable via measurements, and in part due to the specific methodology used to compute tripartite informations of the studied dynamics. We show that these issues can be overcome by using accessible mutual informations, defining corresp…

Purification of Lindblad dynamics, geometry of mixed states and geometric phases

2015

We propose a nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation in a Hilbert space enlarged with an ancilla such that the partial trace of its solution obeys to the Lindblad equation of an open quantum system. The dynamics involved by this nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation constitutes then a purification of the Lindbladian dynamics. This nonlinear equation is compared with other Schr\"odinger like equations appearing in the theory of open systems. We study the (non adiabatic) geometric phases involved by this purification and show that our theory unifies several definitions of geometric phases for open systems which have been previously proposed. We study the geometry involved by this purification and show th…

Designing time and frequency entanglement for generation of high-dimensional photon cluster states

2020

The development of quantum technologies for quantum information science demands the realization and precise control of complex (multipartite and high dimensional) entangled systems on practical and scalable platforms. Quantum frequency combs (QFCs) generated via spontaneous four-wave mixing in integrated microring resonators represent a powerful tool towards this goal. They enable the generation of complex photon states within a single spatial mode as well as their manipulation using standard fiber-based telecommunication components. Here, we review recent progress in the development of QFCs, with a focus on our results that highlight their importance for the realization of complex quantum …
