Operative Reconstruction of the External and Internal Genitalia in Female Patients with Bladder Exstrophy or Incontinent Epispadias
1995
AbstractPurpose: Urologists and gynecologists rarely encounter questions on cohabitation and pregnancy in female patients with bladder exstrophy or incontinent epispadias.Materials and Methods: Until 1994, 41 female patients underwent surgery at our institution (vaginal cutback or vaginoplasty in 23, correction of the external genitalia in 25 and uterus fixation to correct or prevent prolapse in 13).Results: Followup was available in 37 patients (mean 16.8 years, with followup of 18 years or longer in 19). Of the patients 94 percent are satisfied with the cosmetic results. All adults engage in sexual intercourse, 4 delivered 6 children by cesarean section and 5 presently desire children.Con…
Performing, Analyzing, and Interpreting HRAM and HDAM Recordings
2020
Anorectal manometry is one of the most widely performed tests for the assessment of anal sphincter function and anorectal coordination. Nowadays high resolution (HRAM) and high definition anorectal manometry (HDAM) are available, instead of the water-perfused system. The ability to visualize the anorectum as a dynamic structure during test maneuvers should intuitively allow for a better appreciation of the normal physiology and hopefully enhance our understanding of the pathophysiology of defecatory dysfunctions. Even if the anorectal manometry protocols can vary by centers, the procedure must include an assessment of rectoanal pressure and anal canal length at rest, cough reflex test, rect…
The international EAACI/GA²LEN/EuroGuiDerm/APAAACI guideline for the definition, classification, diagnosis, and management of urticaria
2022
This update and revision of the international guideline for urticaria was developed following the methods recommended by Cochrane and the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) working group. It is a joint initiative of the Dermatology Section of the European Academy of Allergology and Clinical Immunology (EAACI), the Global Allergy and Asthma European Network (GALEN) and its Urticaria and Angioedema Centers of Reference and Excellence (UCAREs and ACAREs), the European Dermatology Forum (EDF; EuroGuiDerm), and the Asia Pacific Association of Allergy, Asthma and Clinical Immunology with the participation of 64 delegates of 50 national and international soci…
Online Professionalism-2018 Update of European Association of Urology (@Uroweb) Recommendations on the Appropriate Use of Social Media.
2018
Abstract Context Social media (SoMe) has transformed communication among health care professionals by enabling rapid and global information exchange. Yet, the novelty of SoMe and concerns about potential risks continue to be barriers to adoption. Objective To encourage appropriate professional use of SoMe by physicians in concordance with best practices and to update practical guidelines for effective and professional use of these communication technologies. Evidence aquisition The European Association of Urology (EAU; @Uroweb) brought together a committee of SoMe stakeholders in the urology field. PubMed and the grey literature were searched to identify SoMe position papers by other medica…
Visual exploration and discrimination of emotional facial expressions in 3-, 7- and 12-month-old infants
2015
The first year of life is critical in the development of the abilities to process facial expressions. Numerous studies have investigated discrimination and categorization of distinct facial expressions of emotion. However, infants' visual exploratory strategies of these facial expressions and their developmental paths remain unclear. The perfection of eye movement tracking systems makes now the detailed analysis of facial exploration of faces feasible, and hence facilitates the identification of the features in facial expressions which infants focus on. In this study, oculometric parameters of 3- (n=36), 7- (n=66) and 12-month-old infants (n=59) were collected while facial expressions were …
Towards understanding the Nordic paradox: A review of qualitative interview studies on intimate partner violence against women (IPVAW) in Sweden
2019
Intimate partner violence against women (IPVAW) is a major public health problem in countries around the world, including the Nordic region. Contrary to what would be expected, as the Nordic countries are rated among the most gender equal in the world, survey data suggests that the lifetime prevalence rates of IPVAW in Sweden and neighboring Nordic countries are among the highest in the EU. This phenomenon, which has been termed the Nordic paradox, requires elucidation. The aim of this review is to explore what previous qualitative studies, based on interviews with or field observations of victims, perpetrators, or professionals working in the area, primarily in Sweden, have to teach us abo…
Low intensity magnetic field influences short-term memory: A study in a group of healthy students
2015
This study analyzes if an external magnetic stimulus (2 kHz and approximately 0.1 μT applied near frontal cortex) influences working memory, perception, binary decision, motor execution, and sustained attention in humans. A magnetic stimulus and a sham stimulus were applied to both sides of the head (frontal cortex close to temporal-parietal area) in young and healthy male test subjects (n = 65) while performing Sternberg's memory scanning task. There was a significant change in reaction time. Times recorded for perception, sustained attention, and motor execution were lower in exposed subjects (P < 0.01). However, time employed in binary decision increased for subjects exposed to magnetic …

Molecular Surveillance of HIV-1 in Madrid, Spain: a Phylogeographic Analysis ▿
2011
ABSTRACT The molecular epidemiology of HIV-1 is constantly changing, mainly as a result of human migratory flows and the high adaptive ability of the virus. In recent years, Spain has become one of Europe's main destinations for immigrants and one of the western European countries with the highest rates of HIV-positive patients. Using a phylogeographic approach, we have analyzed the relationship between HIV-1 variants detected in immigrant and native populations of the urban area of Madrid. Our project was based on two coincidental facts. First, resistance tests were extended to naïve and newly diagnosed patients, and second, the Spanish government legislated the provision of legal status t…
Smoking a Dangerous Addiction: A Systematic Review on an Underrated Risk Factor for Oral Diseases
2021
Despite growing knowledge of the adverse effects of cigarette smoking on general health, smoking is one of the most widely prevalent addictions around the world. Globally, about 1.1 billion smokers and over 8 million people die each year because of cigarette smoking. Smoking acts as a source for a variety of oral and systemic diseases. Various periodontal issues such as increased pocket depth, loss of alveolar bone, tooth mobility, oral lesions, ulcerations, halitosis, and stained teeth are more common among smokers. This systematic review was conducted according to the guidelines from PRISMA, and research articles were retrieved from the Web database sources on 31 May 2021. The quality of …
