‘So close, yet so different’ – reflections on the multicultural course of Slavic languages

2019

The complexity of language learning may be expanded to learning the languages belonging to the same language family, for example, Slavic languages. This paper reports on the reflection-on action research aimed at the increase of learners’ multicultural competence and enhancement of critical thinking at the interdisciplinary, blended course of Slavic languages and cultures. The course organized in modules is implemented in Moodle. Course content is designed by the teacher; however, Slavic languages are presented by native speakers of these languages. Learners have an opportunity to get familiar with Slavic languages, history, and culture from the presenters’ perspective, what generally resul…

A person-oriented approach to diary data. Children’s temperamental negative emotionality increases susceptibility to emotion transmission in father-c…

2015

The notion that some individuals are more prone to emotion transmission than others has prompted the need for a person-oriented approach to emotion transmission in parent-child dyads. The present study applied a person-oriented analysis to examine the patterns of emotion transmission that can be identified in the diary data of father-child dyads, and the extent to which children with high levels of temperamental negative emotionality are particularly susceptible to emotion transmission within the family. Mothers of 149 first grade children (age 6 to 7) completed questionnaires concerning their child’s temperament. Mothers and fathers maintained diary questionnaires (for a total of 7 days) c…

Professional agency in a university context: Academic freedom and fetters

2020

Professional agency is an urgent topic in academic contexts, albeit relatively unexplored, and elaborated with contradictory conclusions on its extent and characteristics. To contribute to the discussion, this multimethod study investigated professional agency within a Finnish university. We utilised questionnaire data and interviews to explore agency, as manifested in influencing at work, developing work practices, and negotiating professional identity. We found that overall, these three dimensions of agency were manifested fairly substantially, and in a similar manner among the academic staff. The study further emphasises the social nature of professional agency, and presents theoretical …

‘Because I point to myself as the hog’ : interactional achievement of moral decisions in a classroom

2016

Abstract Drawing on the conversation analytic and sociocultural perspectives, this study investigates children's situated moral negotiations in classroom peer interaction in the absence of a teacher. The conversation analytic methodology is used to operationalise some of the key elements of the sociocultural perspective on moral development. In this way, this study enables readers to observe and study the semiotic, conversational and interactional mediations of moral functioning in real life, with the example of children's moral practices. The empirical analysis is based on video-recorded sequences in which primary school children work with the rules of a counting rhyme which is banned by t…

Psychological variables and temporomandibular disorders: distress, coping, and personality.

2004

Abstract Objective This study analyzes the psychological variables of distress, personality, and coping that are related to the diagnosis based on the Research Diagnostic Criteria for temporomandibular disorder. Study design An age and sex-matched controlled study conducted with a convenience sample (n = 89) in a tertiary care facility. Results The MANCOVA between the muscular (n = 47), articular (n = 42), and control groups (n = 100) showed that the muscular group differed from the control group, obtaining higher levels of distress, anxiety, and depression, and minor use of positive reinterpretation and humor as coping strategies; the articular group also showed higher distress, less posit…

Analysis of HLA-DRB1,DQA1,DQB1 haplotypes in Sardinian centenarians

2008

Some genetic determinants of longevity might reside in those polymorphisms for the immune system genes that regulate immune responses. Many longevity association studies focused their attention on HLA (the human MHC) polymorphisms, but discordant results have been obtained. Sardinians are a relatively isolate population and represent a suitable population for association studies. Some HLA-DR and DQ alleles form very stable haplotypes with a strong linkage disequilibrium. In a previous study on Sardinian centenarians we have suggested that HLA-DRB1 *15 allele might be marginally associated to longevity. HLA-DR,DQ haplotypes are in strong linkage disequilibrium and well conserved playing a ro…

Adsorption of methotrexate and calcium leucovorin onto cholestyramine in vitro.

2003

Abstract Methotrexate (MTX), an antimetabolite of folic acid, is a drug widely used in the treatment of different types of cancer. When high doses are administered, it is necessary to interrupt its action by administering calcium leucovorin (CaL). The main pathway of MTX and CaL elimination in humans occurs through the kidney, but about 10% is excreted in the faeces via the bile. Drugs, foods and sorbents in intestinal lumen modify MTX and CaL reabsorption. Individual and simultaneous studies on the adsorption of MTX and CaL from aqueous phosphate buffer by cholestyramine were carried out in order to calculate the adsorption process of MTX and CaL to cholestyramine, and to characterize the …

Chapter 31 Transcranial magnetic stimulation studies of contralesional space attention deficits

2002

Publisher Summary The power of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to disrupt and modulate the neural activity in focal brain regions has provided researchers in this field a promising tool to empirically test specific neuropsychological models and constructs of contralesional space attention deficits. A group of studies has used TMS to transiently disrupt the cortical activity of the focal brain areas in normal subjects to replicate the effects of neurological lesions. This chapter discusses a number of studies, using single-pulse, paired-TMS, and repetitive TMS (rTMS) and different experimental paradigms that show how this technique can be of fundamental importance, in elucidating the…

--------------------------- Abstract : This text discusses the "identity" that pre-Hispanic art objects acquired from the sixteenth to the twentieth…
