Abstract Let X be a compactum and G an upper semi-continuous decomposition of X such that each element of G is the continuous image of an ordered compactum. If the quotient space X / G is the continuous image of an ordered compactum, under what conditions is X also the continuous image of an ordered compactum? Examples around the (non-metric) Hahn–Mazurkiewicz Theorem show that one must place severe conditions on G if one wishes to obtain positive results. We prove that the compactum X is the image of an ordered compactum when each g ∈ G has 0-dimensional boundary. We also consider the case when G has only countably many non-degenerate elements. On the signature of four-manifolds with universal covering spin

In this note we study closed oriented 4-manifolds whose universal covering is spin and ask whether there are restrictions on the divisibility of the signature. Since any natural number appears as the signature of a connected sum of r 2,s, without the assumption on the universal covering there cannot exist any restrictions. Certainly, the most famous such restriction was proved by Rohlin in [10], where he showed that the signature a of a smooth 4-dimensional spin manifold is divisible by 16 (compare part (2) of our Main Theorem for a new proof). If $n \geq 3$ and $\Gamma$ is a convex-cocompact Zariski-dense discrete subgroup of $\mathbf{SO}^o(1,n+1)$ such that $\delta_\Gamma=n-m$ where $m$ is an integer, $1 \leq m \leq n-1$, we show that for any $m$-dimensional subgroup $U$ in the horospheric group $N$, the Burger-Roblin measure associated to $\Gamma$ on the quotient of the frame bundle is $U$-recurrent.

Generalised norms in finite soluble groups

Abstract We give a framework for a number of generalisations of Baerʼs norm that have appeared recently. For a class C of finite nilpotent groups we define the C -norm κ C ( G ) of a finite group G to be the intersection of the normalisers of the subgroups of G that are not in C . We show that those groups for which the C -norm is not hypercentral have a very restricted structure. The non-nilpotent groups G for which G = κ C ( G ) have been classified for some classes. We give a classification for nilpotent classes closed under subgroups, quotients and direct products of groups of coprime order and show the known classifications can be deduced from our classification.

In this chapter, we use the results of Chapter 11 to prove equidistribution and counting results in Riemannian manifolds (or good orbifolds) and in metric and simplicial graphs (of groups).
Permutable products of supersoluble groups

We investigate the structure of finite groups that are the mutually permutable product of two supersoluble groups. We show that the supersoluble residual is nilpotent and the Fitting quotient group is metabelian. These results are consequences of our main theorem, which states that such a product is supersoluble when the intersection of the two factors is core-free in the group.

All groups that we consider are finite and soluble. Recall that a formation is a class of groups which is closed under homomorphic images and subdirect products. Hence, if F is a formation and G is a group which is a direct product of the subgroups A and B, then G is in F if and only if A and B lie in F. More generally, Doerk and w x Hawkes 4, IV, 1.18 proved that if G is a group such that G s A = B, then G s A = B , where G is the F-residual of G, that is, the smallest normal subgroup of G with quotient in F. (Approximate) Low-Mode Averaging with a new Multigrid Eigensolver

We present a multigrid based eigensolver for computing low-modes of the Hermitian Wilson Dirac operator. For the non-Hermitian case multigrid methods have already replaced conventional Krylov subspace solvers in many lattice QCD computations. Since the $\gamma_5$-preserving aggregation based interpolation used in our multigrid method is valid for both, the Hermitian and the non-Hermitian case, inversions of very ill-conditioned shifted systems with the Hermitian operator become feasible. This enables the use of multigrid within shift-and-invert type eigensolvers. We show numerical results from our MPI-C implementation of a Rayleigh quotient iteration with multigrid.
