Mass Communications as a Vehicle to Lure Russian Émigrés Homeward

2011

After the millions of wartime displaced citizens had been forcibly returned to the Soviet Union after the Second World War, the Soviet Union inaugurated a new type of campaign in the mid-1950s to get all the remaining Soviet citizens and former émigrés from Sovietoccupied areas to migrate back. In this campaign, the Soviets used all the means of mass communication they were able to produce, especially radio combined with the press and direct contact with people. The campaign was not very successful, at least not among the people it was supposed to lure back: people residing in Europe. However, many people, especially from Latin America, migrated back to the Soviet Union, only to be disappoi…

Optimization of spodumene identification by statistical approach for laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy data of lithium pegmatite ores

2021

Mapping with laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) can offer more than just the spatial distribution of elements: the rich spectral information also enables mineral recognition. In the present study, statistical approaches were used for the recognition of the spodumene from lithium pegmatite ores. A broad spectral range (280–820 nm) with multiple lines was first used to establish the methods based on vertex component analysis (VCA) and K-means and DBSCAN clusterings. However, with a view to potential on-site applications, the dimensions of the datasets must be reduced in order to accomplish fast analysis. Therefore, the capability of the methods in mineral identification was tested wi…

Proton implanted waveguides in LiNbO3, KNbO3and BaTiO3

1992

Abstract By using a Van De Graaf accelerator, planar waveguides in LiNbO3, KNbO3, and BaTiO3 are fabricated (at 300 K) by thermally controlled proton implantation. The waveguide properties are investigated by dark line mode spectroscopy. The reconstructed profiles closely follow the ion concentration profiles as determined by simulation (TRIM).

A zinc-doped endodontic cement facilitates functional mineralization and stress dissipation at the dentin surface

2018

Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate nanohardness and viscoelastic behavior of dentin surfaces treated with two canal sealer cements for dentin remineralization. Material and Methods: Dentin surfaces were subjected to: i) 37% phosphoric acid (PA) or ii) 0.5 M ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) conditioning prior to the application of two experimental hydroxyapatite-based cements, containing sodium hydroxide (calcypatite) or zinc oxide (oxipatite), respectively. Samples were stored in simulated body fluid during 24 h or 21 d. The intertubular and peritubular dentin were evaluated using a nanoindenter to assess nanohardness (Hi). The load/displacement responses were used f…

Uranocenium: Synthesis, Structure, and Chemical Bonding

2019

Abstraction of iodide from [(η5 -C5 i Pr5 )2 UI] (1) produced the cationic uranium(III) metallocene [(η5 -C5 i Pr5 )2 U]+ (2) as a salt of [B(C6 F5 )4 ]- . The structure of 2 consists of unsymmetrically bonded cyclopentadienyl ligands and a bending angle of 167.82° at uranium. Analysis of the bonding in 2 showed that the uranium 5f orbitals are strongly split and mixed with the ligand orbitals, thus leading to non-negligible covalent contributions to the bonding. Investigation of the dynamic magnetic properties of 2 revealed that the 5f covalency leads to partially quenched anisotropy and fast magnetic relaxation in zero applied magnetic field. Application of a magnetic field leads to domin…

Isolation of a perfectly linear uranium(II) metallocene

2020

Reduction of the uranium(III) metallocene [(eta(5)-(C5Pr5)-Pr-i)(2)UI] (1) with potassium graphite produces the "second-generation" uranocene [(eta(5)-(C5Pr5)-Pr-i)(2)U] (2), which contains uranium in the formal divalent oxidation state. The geometry of 2 is that of a perfectly linear bis(cyclopentadienyl) sandwich complex, with the ground-state valence electron configuration of uranium(II) revealed by electronic spectroscopy and density functional theory to be 5f(3) 6d(1). Appreciable covalent contributions to the metal-ligand bonds were determined from a computational study of 2, including participation from the uranium 5f and 6d orbitals. Whereas three unpaired electrons in 2 occupy orbi…

Laser-induced time-resolved luminescence in analysis of rare earth elements in apatite and calcite

2021

Laser-induced time-resolved luminescence was used to study rare earth element (REE) containing natural apatite and calcite minerals. The luminescence from 400 nm to 700 nm in the minerals was analyzed with excitation ranges 210–340 nm and 405–535 nm. As an outcome, several useful excitation wavelengths to detect one or more REE from apatite and calcite are reported. The feasibility of selected excitations in e.g. avoiding the disturbance of intense Mn2+ luminescence band, results was demonstrated with a non-gated detector. peerReviewed

Singular value decomposition approach to the yttrium occurrence in mineral maps of rare earth element ores using laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy

2017

Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) has been used in analysis of rare earth element (REE) ores from the geological formation of Norra Kärr Alkaline Complex in southern Sweden. Yttrium has been detected in eudialyte (Na15 Ca6(Fe,Mn)3 Zr3Si(Si25O73)(O,OH,H2O)3 (OH,Cl)2) and catapleiite (Ca/Na2ZrSi3O9·2H2O). Singular value decomposition (SVD) has been employed in classification of the minerals in the rock samples and maps representing the mineralogy in the sampled area have been constructed. Based on the SVD classification the percentage of the yttrium-bearing ore minerals can be calculated even in fine-grained rock samples. peerReviewed

Enhanced quantification of wollastonite and calcite in limestone using fluorescence correction based on continuous wavelet transformation for Raman

2020

Raman spectroscopy offers a nondestructive means to identify minerals in rocks, but the ability to use the technology for quantitative mineralogical analysis is limited by fluorescence that can mask the spectral features of minerals. In this paper we apply continuous wavelet transformation (CWT) to remove fluoresence from Raman data acquired from 26 carbonate rock samples. We then record the intensity values of individual spectral features, proxies for mineral abundances, using the original Raman data and the thus inferred CWT data. The intensity values are then compared against the known mineral abundances determined using the scanning electron microscope (SEM) technology. This comparison …

Tertiary Chiral Nanostructures from C‐H∙∙∙F Directed Assembly of Chiroptical Superatoms

2021

Chiral hierarchical structures are universal in nature, whereas quite challenging to mimic in man-made synthesis. We report herein the synthesis and structure of tertiary chiral nanostructures with 100% optical purity. A novel synthetic strategy, using chiral reducing agent, R and S -BINAPCuBH 4 (BINAP is 2,2'-Bis(diphenylphosphino)-1,1'-binaphthyl), is developed to access to atomically precise, intrinsically chiral [Au 7 Ag 6 Cu 2 ( R - or S -BINAP) 3 (SCH 2 Ph) 6 ]SbF 6 nanoclusters in one-pot synthesis. The clusters represent the first tri-metallic superatoms with inherent chirality and fair stability. Both metal distribution (primary) and ligand arrangement (secondary) of the enantiomer…
