Borrelia burgdorferi Outer Membrane Vesicles Contain Antigenic Proteins, but Do Not Induce Cell Death in Human Cells

2022

Like many bacterial species, Borrelia burgdorferi, the pleomorphic bacterium that causes Lyme borreliosis, produces outer membrane vesicles (OMVs). Borrelial OMVs (BbOMVs) have been identified as containing virulence factors, such as outer surface proteins (Osps) A, B, and C, as well as DNA. However, the pathogenicity of BbOMVs in disease development is still unclear. In this study, we characterized purified BbOMVs by analyzing their size and immunolabeling for known antigenic markers: OspA, OspC, p39, and peptidoglycan. In addition, BbOMVs were cocultured with human non-immune cells for cytotoxicity analysis. The results demonstrated that, on average, the vesicles were small, ranging betwe…

Ekstracelulārās vezikulās ietvertās mikrobiālās RNS atklāšana cilvēku asins un urīna paraugos

2020

Characterization of a bean landrace from Sicily: the ‘fagiolo Badda di Polizzi'

2008

Inside the project “Piano per la Produzione di Proteine Vegetali in Sicilia” investigations were carried out to characterize a bean population cultivated in the Parco delle Madonie area, the ‘Fagiolo Badda di Polizzi’. The producers’ interest for this landrace and the appreciation of the consumers could justify the start up of a valorization program through a product certification. Researches on the morpho-physiological aspects and on the nutritional profile were made in trials conducted between 2005 and 2007. All the Badda bean accessions showed an indeterminate plant growth habit, white flowers and a very delayed flowering time. In particular, a certain variability was seen and described …

La raza como problema filosófico en los escritos de Nietzsche

2020

The article aims to elucidate the role played by “race” in Nietzsche's writings. Nietzsche’s concept of “race” is analyzed and interpreted together with his lexicon of the transformation of the human being and his critique of culture. The concept of “race” is studied together with other adjacent concepts and similar ideas such as the treatment of the Jewish question, his criticism of nationalism, the figure of good Europeans, the metaphor of the blond beast, the human types and the thought of breeding. It is concluded that “race” has an unquestionable physiological and evolutionary character, but through the process of incorporation (Einverleibung), culture and morals intervene in a fundame…

Essential oil from the aerial parts of Centaurea cuneifolia Sibth. & Sm. and C. euxina Velen., two species growing wild in Bulgaria

2009

Abstract The volatile constituents of the aerial parts of Centaurea cuneifolia Sibth. & Sm. and Centaurea euxina Velen. from Bulgaria were extracted by hydrodistillation and were analyzed. The main components in C. cuneifolia were β-eudesmol (26.5%) and hexadecanoic acid (17.6%). The main components in C. euxina were hexadecanoic acid (20.3%), spathulenol (10.8%) and caryophyllene oxide (6.2%). The chemotaxonomic significances with respect to other previously studied species of the same sections ( Achrolopus and Phalolepis , respectively) are discussed.

Processing of metals and metalloids by actinobacteria: Cell resistance mechanisms and synthesis of metal(loid)-based nanostructures

2020

Metal(loid)s have a dual biological role as micronutrients and stress agents. A few geochemical and natural processes can cause their release in the environment, although most metal-contaminated sites derive from anthropogenic activities. Actinobacteria include high GC bacteria that inhabit a wide range of terrestrial and aquatic ecological niches, where they play essential roles in recycling or transforming organic and inorganic substances. The metal(loid) tolerance and/or resistance of several members of this phylum rely on mechanisms such as biosorption and extracellular sequestration by siderophores and extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), bioaccumulation, biotransformation, and me…

Cytotoxic eudesmane sesquiterpenes from Crepis sancta

2019

Abstract Chemical exploration of Crepis sancta (L.) Bornm. (Asteraceae) aerial parts afforded two new eudesmane sesquiterpenes (1 and 2) together with three known congeners (3-5) and two known methylated flavonoids (6 and 7). Structure elucidation of the new compounds was unambiguously performed based on HRESIMS, 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopic analyses. All isolated compounds were subjected to an in vitro cytotoxicity assay against mouse lymphoma (L5178Y) cells, revealing moderate activities with IC50 ranging from 7.9 to 21.0 μM.

Changes in the Pi uptake and polyP accumulation in Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains deficient in the synthesis of trehalose and/or glycerol

2007

Abstract The intracellular level of free inorganic orthophosphate (P i ) in yeast cells generally depends on the P i uptake capacity, energy state of the cells in respect to the activity of the membrane-associated ATPases and on the activity of metabolic pathways involved in the production of glycerol and trehalose. Batch fermentation was performed to investigate the carbon substrate consumption, the P i uptake capacity and product formation by four Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains differing in their ability to produce glycerol and/or trehalose. The consumption of P i in mutant strains with a lack of the synthesis of the trehalose and/or glycerol exceeded the level for a wild type strain ab…

Thilachium madagascariense (Capparaceae), a new species from eastern Madagascar with a key to the species of the genus

2021

SummaryThilachium madagascariense Fici, a small tree characterised by 1-foliolate leaves with articulate petioles, leaf blades elliptic or narrowly obovate with base attenuate and apex acuminate, flowers in groups of 2 – 3 at the top of lateral twigs and a high number of stamens, is described and illustrated from forest habitats of eastern Madagascar. The new species is similar to T. laurifolium Baker, a species endemic to central and eastern Madagascar, differing in the longer leaves with acuminate apex, flowers conferted at the top of lateral twigs, shorter pedicels, higher number of stamens and shorter gynophore. Its affinities are discussed and an updated key is provided for all the spe…
