The river harbour of Ostia Antica - stratigraphy, extent and harbour infrastructure from combined geophysical measurements and drillings

Abstract We performed a combined geophysical and geoarchaeological survey of the harbour of ancient Ostia, Italy, to investigate the extent of the former harbour basin, the sedimentary infill and possible building remains around the harbour. Besides geoarchaeological results the paper highlights the advantage of combining vibracore drilling with different geophysical prospection methods, which are sensitive to different physical soil parameters. Geophysical methods applied were electrical resistivity tomography (ERT), ground penetrating radar (GPR) and seismics with shear and compressional waves. [EN] The objective of the present study was to compare the Landsat-8 and Sentinel-2 images to calculate the wetland´s extension, distribution and degree of conservation, in Reserva de Producción de Fauna Chinborazo (RPFCH) protected area located in the Andean region of Ecuador. This process was developed with in situ work in 16 wetlands, distributed in different conservation levels. Targeted delivery of hydrogen for the bioremediation of aquifers contaminated by dissolved chlorinated compounds.

Dihydrogen (H2) gas injection is a promising option to enhance the reductive biodehalogenation of contaminants in groundwater. However, it is challenging to ensure its targeted delivery at the right places in plumes, and for the long times required for bioremediation. In this paper, the ability of surfactant foam to retain H2 in the saturated zone and to enhance its release in the dissolved form was compared to traditional biosparging. H2 gas was injected, either alone, or as foam, in a 2D saturated cell packed with glass beads. HF radar for wind waves measurements in the Malta-Sicily Channel

Abstract The CALYPSO HF radar network is a permanent and fully operational observing system currently composed of four CODAR SeaSonde stations. The system is providing real-time hourly maps of sea surface currents and waves data in the Malta-Sicily Channel. The present work aims to compare significant wave height measurements by HF Radar to wave data from numerical models and satellite altimeter. Chronospeciation of uranium released in soil during a long-term DU shell weathering experiment.

Corrosion process was investigated of depleted uranium (DU) ammunition fragments buried for three years in aerobic soils continuously irrigated with water. The continuing corrosion process was triggered through formation of soluble uranyl oxyhydrate phases such as metaschoepite and becquerelite, which were identified by micro-Raman and X-ray diffraction spectroscopy. The soil was not amended by phosphates and, therefore, no uranyl phosphates were found as corrosion products on the DU surfaces by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Blood flow in the internal jugular veins during the spaceflight - Is it actually bidirectional?

Recently intriguing results of the research performed on astronauts of the International Space Station have been published. Unexpectedly, in some crew members a stagnant and bidirectional flow in the internal jugular vein was found, and in one of the astronauts this vein seemed to be totally thrombosed. If it actually were the case that in the settings of weightlessness there is a substantial risk of jugular vein thrombosis, any long-term human space missions would be extremely dangerous. A search for time-dependent astrophysical neutrino emission with IceCube data from 2012 to 2017

Abstract High-energy neutrinos are unique messengers of the high-energy universe, tracing the processes of cosmic ray acceleration. This paper presents analyses focusing on time-dependent neutrino point-source searches. A scan of the whole sky, making no prior assumption about source candidates, is performed, looking for a space and time clustering of high-energy neutrinos in data collected by the IceCube Neutrino Observatory between 2012 and 2017.
