Neurogenesis in the adult dentate gyrus (DG) of the hippocampus has been implicated in neural plasticity and cognition but the specific functions contributed by adult-born neurons remain controversial. Here, we have explored the relationship between adult hippocampal neurogenesis and memory function using tasks which specifically require the participation of the DG. Abstract An accurate estimation of particle settling velocities, and/or of particle drag coefficients, is required for modelling purposes in many industrially important multiphase processes involving the suspension of millimetre and sub-millimetre size particles in a liquid phase. Abstract Embedding biostructures in saccharide glasses protects them against extreme dehydration and/or exposure to very high temperature. Among the saccharides, trehalose appears to be the most effective bioprotectant. In this paper we report on the low-frequency dynamics of carbon monoxy myoglobin in an extremely dry trehalose glass measured by neutron spectroscopy. Under these conditions, the mean square displacements and the density of state function are those of a harmonic solid, up to room temperature, in contrast to D 2 O-hydrated myoglobin, in which a dynamical transition to a nonharmonic regime has been observed at ∼180K (Doster et al., 1989. Although cancer and diabetes are common diseases, the relationship between diabetes, neuropathy and the risk of developing peripheral sensory neuropathy while or after receiving chemotherapy is uncertain. In this review, we highlight the effects of chemotherapy on the onset or progression of neuropathy in diabetic patients. We searched the literature in Medline and Scopus, covering all entries until 31 January 2021. Abstract Modified electro-optical absorption and emission methods were used to measure the dipole moments of four efficient coumarin laser dyes (CU1, CU4, CU120, CU334) in the equilibrated ground, excited Franck-Condon and equilibrated excited states. The measurements were performed in cyclohexane (CU1, CU120, CU334) and dioxane (all CUs) at room temperature. Our results show that the charge distribution in CU4 differs substantially from that in the other CUs. Influence of the Madden-Julian Oscillation on Southern African summer rainfall

Rain-causing mechanisms over Southern Africa (south of 15˚S) involve both tropical and temperate dynamics. Most studies focused on the synoptical timescale, while the intraseasonal (20-120 days) variability has more been neglected to date. This study aims at determining whether the dominant mode of intraseasonal variability in the Tropics, namely the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO), has a significant impact on Southern African rainfall and associated atmospheric dynamics. Monte Carlo simulation of high‐order harmonics generation in bulk semiconductors and submicron structures

To qualify the feasibility of standard semiconductor materials and Schottky‐barrier diodes (SBDs) for THz high‐order harmonic generation and extraction, the harmonic intensity, intrinsic noise and signal‐to‐noise ratio are calculated by the Monte Carlo method when a periodic high‐frequency large‐amplitude external signal is applied to a semiconductor device. Due to very high signal‐to‐noise ratio heavily doped GaAs SBDs are found to exhibit conditions for frequency mixing and harmonic extraction that are definitively superior to those of bulk materials. Atomic Structures of Two Novel Immunoglobulin-like Domain Pairs in the Actin Cross-linking Protein Filamin

Filamins are actin filament cross-linking proteins composed of an N-terminal actin-binding domain and 24 immunoglobulin-like domains (IgFLNs). Filamins interact with numerous proteins, including the cytoplasmic domains of plasma membrane signaling and cell adhesion receptors. Thereby filamins mechanically and functionally link the cell membrane to the cytoskeleton. Most of the interactions have been mapped to the C-terminal IgFLNs 16–24. Similarly, as with the previously known compact domain pair of IgFLNa20–21, the two-domain fragments IgFLNa16–17 and IgFLNa18–19 were more compact in small angle x-ray scattering analysis than would be expected for two independent domains. Luminescence of gamma-radiation-induced defects in alpha-quartz

Optical transitions associated with gamma-radiation-induced defects in crystalline a-quartz were investigated by photoluminescence excited by both pulsed synchrotron radiation and steady-state light. After a 10 MGy gamma-dose we observed two emissions at 4.9 eV (ultraviolet band) and 2.7 eV (blue band) excitable in the range of the induced absorption band at 7.6 eV. These two luminescence bands show a different temperature dependence: the ultraviolet band becomes bright below 80 K; the blue band increases below 180 K, but drops down below 80 K. This contribution summarizes the splinter session "Non-thermal processes in coronae and beyond" held at the Cool Stars 17 workshop in Barcelona in 2012. It covers new developments in high energy non-thermal effects in the Earth's exosphere, solar and stellar flares, the diffuse emission in star forming regions and reviews the state and the challenges of the underlying atomic databases.
