Wavelength influence on nitrogen insertion into titanium by nanosecond pulsed laser irradiation in air
2013
Abstract We studied in this work the influence of the wavelength (532 vs. 1064 nm) on the insertion of nitrogen in titanium targets by surface laser treatments in air. The laser pulses were of 5 ns and the irradiance was lower than 25 × 10 12 W/m 2 . Results obtained using a frequency-doubled Nd:YAG laser at 532 nm were compared with those previously reported for laser treatments at 1064 nm. Nuclear reaction analysis and micro-Raman spectroscopy were used for determining the composition and the structure of the surface layers, respectively. Results showed the lower efficiency of irradiation at 532 nm for nitrogen insertion, which is possible only above threshold conditions depending on bot…
Silica nanoparticle core structure examined by the E?Si? center 29Si strong hyperfine interaction
2015
Abstract β-Ray irradiation up to 1.2 GGy was employed to induce E′Si γ defects and to study the structure of silica nanoparticles with diameters from 7 up to 20 nm. Defect concentration and their 29 Si strong hyperfine doublet were investigated through electron paramagnetic resonance measurements. Our data indicate that stable defects are located in the nanoparticle core. Furthermore, the E′Si γ hyperfine interaction evidences that the core structure is denser than bulk silica and independent from the particle size. Finally, we put in evidence that the core structure is stable and unaffected by the irradiation in the investigated dose range maintaining the specific features of nanoparticles.
Low-K factor of SiO2 layer on Si irradiated by YAG:Nd laser
2007
Abstract The change of optical and electrical properties of SiO2 layer on Si single crystal exposed to YAG:Nd laser radiation has been found experimentally. The second harmonic of YAG:Nd laser was used as a source of light. Before irradiation the SiO2 layer with thickness 0.75 μm had red color in reflecting light due to the interference. After irradiation with the laser with intensity of more than 3.5 MW/cm2 red color changed to yellow. However, samples with thickness 0.21 μm did not change color after irradiation. We explain such peculiarities of optical properties by change of optical path. Capacity (C) measurements of SiO2 layer with thickness 0.21 μm by the method of capacity–voltage ch…
Investigations of the corrosion protection of ultrathin a-C and a-C:N overcoats for magnetic storage devices
2004
Abstract The thickness-dependent corrosion protection of carbon overcoats for magnetic hard disks can be analyzed by collecting X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectra at the Co L3-edge. Co is the main constituent of the protected magnetic media underneath. The spectra of the Co absorption edge display a strong peak for pure metallic, non-oxidized Co. This peak splits up into several sub-structures for oxidized Co. Therefore, XANES spectra provide a straightforward method to determine the overcoat thickness, leading to closed coverage and corrosion protection of the underlying material. A similar approach was carried out by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Standard a-C:N…
Role ofH2Oin the thermal annealing of theEγ′center in amorphous silicon dioxide
2009
The model for the annealing of a radiation-induced point defect in silica, the ${\text{E}}_{\ensuremath{\gamma}}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ center, is identified in the temperature range $(150--550)\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{}\text{C}$. Thermal treatments in controlled atmospheres of water vapor, oxygen, or helium of irradiated amorphous silicon dioxide are carried out. Direct experimental evidences that the annealing of the ${\text{E}}_{\ensuremath{\gamma}}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ center is caused by a reaction with diffusing water molecules are found. A rate equation system describing this annealing process is inferred, and its solutions are compared with experimental data to obtain quantitative …
Dielectric properties of reactor irradiated ferroelectric thin films
2001
Abstract Radiation effects in highly oriented Pb1Zr0.53Ti0.47O3 (PZT), Pb0.94La0.06Zr0.65Ti0.35O3 (PLZT-6), and PbiZriO3 (PZ) ferroelectric (FE) and antiferroelectric (AF) thin films are investigated in view of their possible application as a temperature sensitive element in a new bolometer system for ITER (International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor). The dielectric properties (i.e. hysteresis loops, dielectric constants) of the films were investigated in a frequency range from 20 to 105 Hz and at temperatures up to 450 °C, before and after neutron irradiation to a neutron fluence of 5×1021 m−2 (E<0.1 MeV). The dielectric constant was measured during cooling with 1.7 °Cmin−1. The diel…
Reversible oxidation of WOx and MoOx nano phases
2012
International audience; WOx and MoOx nano phases were prepared on TiO2(1 1 0) surfaces by a CVD procedure consisting of adsorption and decomposition of W(CO)(6) or Mo(CO)(6) precursors followed by annealing under UHV. Metal amount involved in each elaborated sample is in the fractional range from 0.1 to 0.35 equivalent monolayer (eqML) of W or Mo. Evolution of sample stoichiometry as a function of subsequent treatment is followed by valence band and core level photoemission as well as work function measurement. In each case, exposure of samples to molecular oxygen at room temperature induces an increase of sample work function in a range of several tenth of eV. Such a work function change i…
Tritium sorption and desorption from JET beryllium tiles under temperature, electron radiation and magnetic field
2008
Abstract Tritium release at annealing of samples cut from beryllium tiles exposed to D + D, D + T plasma in the Joint European Torus (JET) was investigated under 5 MeV fast-electron radiation at the dose rate 14 MGy h −1 and in a magnetic field of 1.7 T separately and simultaneously in order to evaluate possible effects of these factors. Abundances of chemical forms of tritium—molecular T 2 (44%), atomic T 0 (42%), and ionic T + (14%) and their distribution were determined in the plasma-exposed beryllium samples with lyomethods. Fast-electron radiation considerably increased the fractional tritium release at annealing by a factor of approximately 5. The magnetic field increased the fraction…
Tritium release from breeding blanket materials in high magnetic field
2007
Abstract Under the operating conditions of a fusion reactor, the blanket materials: ceramic and Be pebbles will be at a high temperature (up to 1123 K), under action of intense radiation (up to 10 19 n m −2 s −1 ) and magnetic field (MF) up to 7–10 T. In order to introduce action of radiation and MF in post-irradiation investigations of the tritium release from the blanket materials, a special rig for thermo-annealing of pre-irradiated samples at a high temperature up to 1120 K under irradiation with fast electrons of 5 MeV and dose rate 14 MGy/h in MF up to 1.7 T was used for this study. A delay of the tritium release in MF of 2.4 T at thermo-annealing of the lithium orthosilicate Li 4 S…
THz nanocrystal acoustic vibrations from ZrO2 3D supercrystals
2013
International audience; We report sharp low-frequency Raman spectral features of supercrystals synthesized via the "benzyl alcohol route" and consisting of either yttrium-stabilized or pure zirconia (ZrO2) nanocrystals. In situ formed benzoate species control the nanocrystal growth and act as organic glue leading to the assembly of the nanocrystals in highly ordered 3D supercrystals. We attribute some Raman peaks to THz acoustic vibrations of individual nanocrystals which are only weakly coupled due to the strong acoustic mismatch between the capping ligands and the nanocrystals. Peak positions are consistent with nanocrystal sizes estimated from transmission electron microscopy and X-ray p…
