Decorated pottery study: Analysis of pigments by x-ray absorbance spectroscopy measurements

2007

Characterization of pigments on decorated pottery fragments has been fully carried out by nondestructive x-ray absorbance spectroscopy (XAS). The samples were a series of pottery shards excavated from the archeological site of Caltagirone (Sicily, Italy), a well-known ceramic production center. Aesthetical criteria and morphological observations allowed us to attribute the samples to quite different historical periods, starting from the 18th century B.C. up to the 16th century A.D. An extensive time interval led us to suppose that different materials and techniques were used for the production of the ceramic paste and also for the preparation of pigments. XAS measurements were performed at …

Limit on the diffuse flux of ultrahigh energy tau neutrinos with the surface detector of the Pierre Auger Observatory

2009

Data collected at the Pierre Auger Observatory are used to establish an upper limit on the diffuse flux of tau neutrinos in the cosmic radiation. Earth-skimming ντ may interact in the Earth's crust and produce a τ lepton by means of charged-current interactions. The τ lepton may emerge from the Earth and decay in the atmosphere to produce a nearly horizontal shower with a typical signature, a persistent electromagnetic component even at very large atmospheric depths. The search procedure to select events induced by τ decays against the background of normal showers induced by cosmic rays is described. The method used to compute the exposure for a detector continuously growing with time is de…

Search for Extraterrestrial Point Sources of Neutrinos with AMANDA-II

2003

We present the results of a search for point sources of high energy neutrinos in the northern hemisphere using AMANDA-II data collected in the year 2000. Included are flux limits on several AGN blazars, microquasars, magnetars and other candidate neutrino sources. A search for excesses above a random background of cosmic-ray-induced atmospheric neutrinos and misreconstructed downgoing cosmic-ray muons reveals no statistically significant neutrino point sources. We show that AMANDA-II has achieved the sensitivity required to probe known TeV gamma-ray sources such as the blazar Markarian 501 in its 1997 flaring state at a level where neutrino and gamma-ray fluxes are equal.

Fast and blister-free irradiation conditions for cross-linking of PMMA induced by 2MeV protons

2013

For soft lithography, the conventional negative tone resists, such as SU-8, that are used to create the mold have a number of drawbacks. PMMA, which is normally used as a positive tone resist, can be used as a negative resist by using high-fluence irradiation conditions. In this report, we outline optimization of the irradiation conditions for PMMA thin films using 2MeV H^+ ions to exploit their ability to work as a negative tone resist at ion fluences above 1.0x10^1^5ionscm^-^2. The main aim was to induce cross-linking while maintaining the exposed regions free of blisters and maintaining short irradiation times. We found that by using a two-step process with a low-flux irradiation, follow…

Solar radiation in Spain

1986

In Spain there are only a few stations registering solar radiation, but by using correlations with other meteorological variables, an estimate of the solar radiation can be made in other areas throughout the country. The best results have been obtained using the correlation with hours of bright sunshine. Four linear expressions between the two variables have been obtained, corresponding to the four seasons of the year. Employing such expressions, monthly maps of solar radiation isolines have been plotted for the peninsular part of Spain. The mean deviation is not higher than 5 per cent.

<title>Hardening in LiF, induced by fast Kr and Ni ions, and recovery of the structure and properties under annealing</title>

2005

The recovery of optical and mechanical properties of LiF crystals irradiated with 790 MeV 78Kr and 640 MeV 58Ni ions at 10l2 ions/cm2 under annealing at temperatures up to 810 K is investigated. The optical absorbance and depth profiles of hardness before and after annealing were measured. A marked recovery of hardness and change in the optical absorption spectra were observed at temperatures above 520-530 K. An activation energy of 0.15±0.02eV, which is close to that for the thermal migration of H centers, is obtained from the annealing data. The results indicate a significant role of the H-center aggregates in the hardening and annealing processes. The maximum hardening is created and the…

Pressure dependence of the optical properties of wurtzite and rock-salt Zn1–xCoxO thin films

2007

In this paper we investigate the electronic structure of Zn 1-x Co x O by means of optical absorption measurements under pressure. Thin films of Zn 1-x Co x O with different Co content (from 1 to 30%) were prepared by pulsed laser deposition on mica substrates. Absorption spectra exhibit three main features that are clearly correlated to the Co content in the films: (i) absorption peaks in the infrared associated to crystal-field-split internal transitions in the Co 3d shell, with very small pressure coefficients due to their atomic character; (ii) a broad absorption band below the fundamental edge associated to charge transfer transitions, that exhibit relatively large pressure coefficient…

X-ray CT imaging as a scientific tool to study the capillary water absorption in sedimentary rocks used in cultural heritages

2009

This paper proposes the X-Ray CT imaging as appropriate tool for investigating the capillary water absorption in sedimentary rocks. This technique, in fact, provides information useful for deeping the knowledge about of the porosity and the kinetics of the water capillary absorption in porous materials. The possibility to improve in non invasive manner, the understanding of this phenomenon, constitutes a fundamental aspect to take actions in the restoration and conservation of lapideous artifact and monuments from cultural heritages. The investigated sedimentary rocks come from different Sicilian quarries and were used for the building of the Greek temples in the archaeological areas of Agr…

The vibrational levels of methane obtained from analyses of high-resolution spectra

2006

International audience; Methane and its tetrahedral isotopologues are spherical-top molecules whose high-resolution rovibrational spectra can only be analyzed in detail, thanks to sophisticated symmetry-adapted tensorial models. However, the effective Hamiltonian parameters of such models do not give direct access to the positions of the vibrational sublevels. In this paper, we present a calculation of the vibrational level positions for 12CH4, 13CH4, 12CD4 and 13CD4 performed using the effective Hamiltonian parameters obtained through recent analyses. We also include the results of a re-analysis of the octad system of 12CH4 performed with a higher order of the development which slightly im…
