Visualization practices in Scandinavian newsrooms : a qualitative study
2017
The visualization of numeric data is becoming an important element in journalism, and new tools and platforms make the development of data visualization in the news discourse accelerate. In this paper we present an interview study investigating this development in Scandinavian newsrooms. Editorial leaders, data journalists, graphic designers, and developers in 10 major news organizations in Norway, Sweden and Denmark inform the study on a range of issues concerning visual practices and experiences in the newsrooms. Elements of tension are revealed on issues concerning the role and effect of complex, exploratory data visualizations and concerning the role of ordinary journalists in the produ…
Optimal Management of Human Resources in Transhipment Container Ports
2014
Human resources allocation plays a key role in Transhipment Maritime Container Terminals to achieve high levels of productivity and provide high quality services to shipping companies. The deep interest of container terminals in this issue can be supported by optimization methods. In this work, an optimization model is proposed to determine the optimal daily allocation of crane operators and trailer drivers. Different requirements are taken into account for permanent staff, external workers and personnel shortfall. Since workforce undermanning is a crucial factor for both shipping companies and container terminals, we aim to show that personnel shortfalls and operation delays can be signifi…
Optimal Integration of Hybrid Supercapacitor and IPT System for a Free-Catenary Tramway
2019
The aim of the paper is the study of an optimal integration of a supercapacitor-based storage system and inductive power transfer system for the free-catenary operation of a tramway. Starting from the definition of the topology of inductive power transfer system, we propose and analyze a design procedure for the pads of the inductive power system. In the second part of the paper, an optimal integration strategy for the correct size of on-board supercapacitors and the power of the inductive energy transfer are proposed. The results obtained by means of numerical simulations are discussed. © 2018 IEEE.

Frailty Scales for Prognosis Assessment of Older Adult Patients after Acute Myocardial Infarction
2021
We aimed to compare the prognostic value of two different measures, the Fried’s Frailty Scale (FFS) and the Clinical Frailty Scale (CFS), following myocardial infarction (MI). We included 150 patients ≥ 70 years admitted from AMI. Frailty was evaluated on the day before discharge. The primary endpoint was number of days alive and out of hospital (DAOH) during the first 800 days. Secondary endpoints were mortality and a composite of mortality and reinfarction. Frailty was diagnosed in 58% and 34% of patients using the FFS and CFS scales, respectively. During the first 800 days 34 deaths and 137 admissions occurred. The number of DAOH decreased significantly with increasing scores of both FFS…
Synergistic interaction between Parthenolide and TRAIL induces apoptosis in human hepatocarcinoma cells.
2009
Partenolide, a natural compound used in traditional medicine for its anti-inflammatory activity, has recently shown anti-tumor and apoptotic effects. Our studies demonstrated that HepG2; Hep3B and SK-Hep1 hepatocarcinoma cells, which are resistant to human recombinant TRAIL, are potently sensitized to TRAIL-induced apoptosis by low doses of parthenolide resulting in a marked synergist effect. To clarify the mechanism that accounts for this interaction, we demonstrated that parthenolide/TRAIL combination markedly increased DR4 and DR5. These effects might be correlated with STAT proteins modifications. In fact parthenolide and parthenolide/TRAIL combination decreased STAT3 and STAT5 and thei…
Surveillance of spontaneous breast cancer metastasis by TRAIL-expressing CD34⁺ cells in a xenograft model
2012
Tumor necrosis factor-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL), delivered as a membrane-bound molecule expressed on the surface of adenovirus-transduced CD34+ cells (CD34-TRAIL+), was analyzed for its apoptotic activity in vitro on 12 breast cancer cell lines representing estrogen receptor-positive, HER2+ and triple-negative (TN) subtypes and for its effect on tumor growth, vascularization, necrosis, and lung metastasis incidence in NOD/SCID mice xenografted with the TN breast cancer line MDA-MB-231. Mesenchymal TN cell lines, which are the richest in putative tumor stem cells among the different breast cancer cell subtypes, were the most susceptible to apoptosis induced by CD34-TRAIL+ cel…
Contrail Formation: Analysis of Sublimation Mechanisms
2018
We study losses of ice crystals in a persistent, soot-rich contra i l in the wake behind a medium-sized aircraft at cru i se. Constrain i n g a model covering ice nucleation, growth, and subl i m a t i o n phases with a n aircraft data set, we track the subl i m a t i o n history over two minutes of cont r a i l age and rela t e ice crystal numbers to the number of soot particles emitted by th e aircraft engines.
The Global-Local Approach for Damage Detection in Composite Structures and Rails
2021
Structural components with waveguide geometry can be probed using guided elastic waves. Analytical solutions are prohibitive in complex geometries, especially in presence of structural discontinuities or defects. The Global-Local (GL) approach provides the solution by splitting the waveguide in “local” and “global” regions. The “local” region contains the part of the structure responsible for the complex scattering of an incident wave. What happens in this region cannot be reproduced analytically. The “global” region is regular and sufficiently far from the scatterer, in order to exploit known analytical wave propagation solutions. The proposed GL approach discretizes the local region by re…
Intensity spiral patterns in a semiconductor microresonator
2005
Spiral waves appear frequently in nature. They have been studied, e.g., in hydrodynamic systems, chemical reactions, and in a large variety of biological and physical systems [Grill et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 75, 3368 (1995); Goryachev and Kapral, Phys. Rev. Lett. 76, 1619 (1996)]. In contrast to chemical and hydrodynamic processes where the field amplitude exhibits the spiral patterns (intensity spirals), in optics the spiral structures relate generally to the phase structure of the optical field (so-called 'optical vortices' [Lugiato et al., Adv. At., Mol., Opt. Phys. 40, 229 (1999); Arecchi et al., Phys. Rep. 318, 1 (1999); Weiss et al., Appl. Phys. B:Lasers Opt. B68, 151 (1999)]). Thus th…
