DFT calculations of structures, 13C NMR chemical shifts, and Raman RBM mode of simple models of small‐diameter zigzag (4,0) carboxylated single‐walle…

2012

Linearly conjugated benzene rings (acenes), belt‐shaped molecules (cyclic acenes), and models of single‐walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) with one carboxylic group at the open end were fully optimized at the B3LYP/6‐31G* level of theory. These models were selected to obtain some insight into the nuclear isotropic changes resulting from systematically increasing the basic building units of open‐tip‐monocarboxylated SWCNTs. In addition, the position of radial breathing mode (RBM), empirically correlated with the SWCNT diameter, was directly related with the radius of model cyclic acene rings. A regular convergence of selected structural, NMR, and Raman parameters with the molecular system size…

TiO2 Nanostructures for Photoelectrocatalytic Degradation of Acetaminophen

2019

[EN] Advanced oxidation processes driven by renewable energy sources are gaining attention in degrading organic pollutants in waste waters in an efficient and sustainable way. The present work is focused on a study of TiO2 nanotubes as photocatalysts for photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) degradation of acetaminophen (AMP) at different pH (3, 7, and 9). In particular, different TiO2 photocatalysts were synthetized by stirring the electrode at different Reynolds numbers (Res) during electrochemical anodization. The morphology of the photocatalysts and their crystalline structure were evaluated by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and Raman confocal laser microscopy (RCLM). These a…

Raman spectral identification of phase distribution in anodic titanium dioxide coating

2017

Growing need for cleaner environment and energy production has brought about a hunt for perspective materials. One of such perspective materials is titanium dioxide (TiO2, titania) due to its chemical stability and photocatalytic properties. Titania can be synthesized through many methods but anodization process is one of the prevailing methods to produce high active surface nanostructured titania. Various anodization electrolytes produce different polymorphs of TiO2. Uniform phase distribution on the surface is crucial for higher photocatalytic activity. In this research, the influence of two electrolytes on polymorph phase distribution of TiO2 was investigated. Phase distribution correlat…

Polarisation dependent Raman study of single-crystal nickel oxide

2011

Abstract The magnetic domain structure and Raman scattering have been studied in NiO single-crystals with three different (100), (110) and (111) orientations. Twin-domain structure was observed in NiO(100) and NiO(110) single-crystals using cross-polarized optical microscopy. We found that the ratio of the two-magnon (at 1500 cm−1) to the two-phonon (2LO, at 1100 cm−1) Raman bands intensity is sensitive in a particular way to the type of the twin-domain pattern.

Synergistic enhancement via plasmonic nanoplate-bacteria-nanorod supercrystals for highly efficient SERS sensing of food-borne bacteria

2017

Bio-sensing techniques utilizing metallic nanoparticles as a probe have gained more and more attention and play today an important role in the detection of bacteria. To date, although several sensing materials have been tested, there is still a long way to go to achieve a fast, low-cost, ultrasensitive and multifunctional substrate suitable for a universal biosensor for detection of bacterial cells. Here, we report a novel probe design based on anisotropic plasmonic nanoparticles organized to a biocompatible 3D bio-inorganic scaffold, i.e., nanoplate-bacteria-nanorod supercrystals (NBNS) with extremely high surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopic (SERS) activity as a model of synergistic plasm…

Carbon Dots Dispersed on Graphene/SiO2/Si: A Morphological Study

2019

Low-dimensional carbon materials occupy a relevant role in the field of nanotechnology. Herein, the authors report a study conducted by atomic force microscopy and Raman spectroscopy on the deposition of carbon dots onto graphene surfaces. The study aims at understanding if and how the morphology and the microstructure of chemical vapor deposited graphene on Si/SiO2 may change due to the interaction with the carbon dots. Potential alteration in the graphene's electrical properties might be detrimental for optoelectronic applications. The deposition of carbon dots dispersed in water and ethanol solvents are explored to investigate the effect of solvents with different fluidic properties. The…

Raman and optical reflection spectra of germanate and silicate glasses

2005

Abstract Germanate and phosphosilicate glasses made in oxygen surplus conditions were studied by Raman and optical reflection methods. We found that the optical reflection spectra of the germanate glasses are quite similar to the one those of a GeO 2 crystal with the α-quartz structure. The reflection of phosphosilicate glasses is very close to silica glass-related spectra. Hence, the determining influence of the tetrahedral structure on reflection spectra is revealed. The Raman spectra of germanate samples are similar to those reported the one known in the literature. Octahedral entities, namely bands similar to stishovite vibration modes, were difficult to detect in phosphosilicate glasse…

Extruded Expanded Polystyrene Sheets Coated by TiO2 as New Photocatalitic Materials for Foodstuffs Packaging

2012

Nanostructured, photoactive anatase TiO2 sol prepared under very mild conditions using titanium tetraisopropoxide as the precursor is used to functionalise extruded expanded polystyrene (XPS) sheets by spray-coating resulting in stable and active materials functionalised by TiO2 nanoparticles. Photocatalytic tests of these sheets performed in a batch reactor in gas-solid system under UV irradiation show their successful activity in degrading probe molecules (2-propanol, trimethylamine and ethene). Raman spectra ensure the deposition of TiO2 as crystalline anatase phase on the polymer surface. The presence of TiO2 with respect to polymer surface can be observed in SEM images coupled to EDAX …

Structure of e-beam sculptured poly(N-vinylpyrrolidone) networks across different length-scales, from macro to nano

2013

Abstract Study of macromolecular structure and dynamics of networks formed by pulsed electron-beam irradiation of poly(N-vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP) aqueous solutions, at relatively low energy per pulse and across different concentration regimes, provides the basis for the understanding of a new generation of functional nanostructures. Networks are the result of the follow–up reactions initiated by a continuous series of electron pulse-generated hydroxyl radicals, which may have a different fate at the variance of polymer concentration. Different spectroscopic techniques, FT-IR, 13 C { 1 H} CP-MAS NMR and Raman, applied to characterize the formed networks, describe a profound modification of t…
