Effects of Gamma Irradiation on the Kinetics of the Adsorption and Desorption of Hydrogen in Carbon Microfibres

2013

In this study, three types of carbon fibres were used, they were ex-polyacrylonitrile carbon fibres with high bulk modulus, ex-polyacrylonitrile fibres with high strength, and vapour grown carbon fibres. All the samples were subjected to a hydrogen adsorption process at room temperature in an over-pressured atmosphere of 25 bars. The adsorption process was monitored through electrical resistivity measurements. As conditioning of the fibres, a chemical activation by acid etching followed by ¿-ray irradiation with 60Co radioisotopes was performed. The surface energy was deter-mined by means of the sessile drop test. Both conditioning treatments are supplementary; the chemical activation works…

Inelastic neutron and low-frequency Raman scattering in a niobium-phosphate glass for Raman gain applications

2011

Abstract We present measurements of the vibrational spectrum of a binary niobium-phosphate glass in the THz frequency range using inelastic neutron and Raman scattering. The spectra of these glasses show a low-frequency enhancement of the vibrational density of states (“boson peak”). Using a recently developed theory of vibrational excitations in disordered solids we are able to reconcile the measured neutron and Raman spectra using fluctuating elastic and Pockels constants as a model concept. As the spontaneous Raman susceptibility is a key parameter for Raman amplification our results suggest a significant gain profile for application of niobium-phosphate glasses in Raman amplifiers.

Optical rogue-wave-like extreme value fluctuations in fiber Raman amplifiers

2008

International audience; We report experimental observation and characterization of rogue wave-like extreme value statistics arising from pump-signal noise transfer in a fiber Raman amplifier. Specifically, by exploiting Raman amplification with an incoherent pump, the amplified signal is shown to develop a series of temporal intensity spikes whose peak power follows a power-law probability distribution. The results are interpreted using a numerical model of the Raman gain process using coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations, and the numerical model predicts results in good agreement with experiment.

Experimental signatures of extreme optical fluctuations in lumped Raman fiber amplifiers

2012

International audience; In this work, we experimentally investigate several temporal and spectral methods to highlight extreme fluctuations which can develop during the Raman amplification of an ultrashort pulse train. Forward and backward pumping schemes are compared to dual pass configurations.

Raman-assisted three-wave mixing of non-phase-matched waves in optical fibres: application to wide-range frequency conversion

2001

International audience; We analyse theoretically and experimentally the Raman-assisted parametric coupling between non-phase-matched waves propagating in normally dispersive single-mode fibres. We perform a careful analysis of the wave-coupling behaviour, which shows that scalar and vector three-wave mixing (TWM) interactions induce a relatively small periodic power flow between a central-frequency pump at frequency ω0 and a pair of up-shifted (anti-Stokes) and down-shifted (Stokes) sidebands at frequencies View the MathML source and View the MathML source, respectively. For sufficiently high pump powers, the stimulated Raman scattering enters into play, causing a unilateral transfer of ene…

The mass load effect on the resonant acoustic frequencies of colloidal semiconductor nanoplatelets

2016

Resonant acoustic modes of ultrathin CdS and CdSe colloidal nanoplatelets (NPLs) with varying thicknesses were probed using low frequency Raman scattering. The spectra are dominated by an intense band ascribed to the thickness breathing mode of the 2D nanostructures. The measured Raman frequencies show strong deviations with respect to the values expected for simple bare plates, all the more so as the thickness is reduced. The deviation is shown to arise from the additional mass of the organic ligands that are bound to the free surfaces of the nanoplatelets. The calculated eigen frequencies of vibrating platelets weighed down by the mass of the organic ligands are in very good agreement wit…

Lattice Dynamics Study of HgGa2Se4 at High Pressures

2013

We report on Raman scattering measurements in mercury digallium selenide (HgGa2Se4) up to 25 GPa. We also performed, for the low-pressure defect-chalcopyrite structure, lattice-dynamics ab initio calculations at high pressures which agree with experiments. Measurements evidence that the semiconductor HgGa2Se4 exhibits a pressure-induced phase transition above 19 GPa to a previously undetected structure. This transition is followed by a transformation to a Raman-inactive phase above 23.4 GPa. On downstroke from 25 GPa until 2.5 GPa, a broad Raman spectrum was observed, which has been attributed to a fourth phase, and whose pressure dependence was followed during a second upstroke. Candidate …

Variability of the Si-O-Si angle in amorphous-SiO2 probed by electron paramagnetic resonance and Raman spectroscopy

2009

We report an experimental investigation by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and Raman spectroscopy on a variety of amorphous silicon dioxide materials. Our study by EPR have permitted us to point out that the splitting of the primary hyperfine doublet of the Eγ′ center shows a relevant sample-to-sample variability, changing from ∼41.8 to ∼42.6 mT in the set of materials we considered. The parallel study by Raman spectroscopy has enabled us to state that this variability is attributable to the different Si-O-Si angle characterizing the matrices of the different materials. © 2009 Elsevier B.V. Spontaneous core–shell elemental distribution in In-rich In(x)Ga1-xN nanowires grown by molecular beam epitaxy.

2014

International audience; The elemental distribution of self-organized In-rich InxGa1-xN nanowires grown by plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy has been investigated using three different techniques with spatial resolution on the nanoscale. Two-dimensional images and elemental profiles of single nanowires obtained by x-ray fluorescence and energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy, respectively, have revealed a radial gradient in the alloy composition of each individual nanowire. The spectral selectivity of resonant Raman scattering has been used to enhance the signal from very small volumes with different elemental composition within single nanowires. The combination of the three techniques ha…
