An operon for histidine biosynthesis in Streptomyces coelicolor

On the assumption that a cluster of five his genes (eight cistrons) in S. coelicolor corresponds to an operon, a genetic analysis of a constitutive mutant was carried out. This strain has a multi-site mutation localized at the (conventional) right end of the his cluster and is derepressed for at least two enzymes coded by genes of the cluster. The study of suitable heterozygous clones (heteroclones), showed the mutation to be cis-dominant, suggesting that the operator region is affected. Sex chromosomes in vertebrates: XX/XY against ZZ/ZW.

It was noted only recently that the mammalian X/Y sex chromosome system originated late in our therian ancestors. The question is, what makes the X/Y sex chromosome system so special that it has replaced the original Z/W sex chromosome system? Two classes of genes are overrepresented on the X chromosome: sex and reproduction genes and brain-related genes. The X chromosome has acquired bursts of young male-biased genes engaged in sex and reproduction which exemplifies the dynamics of sex chromosome evolution. Conserved synteny of mammalian imprinted genes in chicken, frog, and fish genomes

Conservation of synteny of mammalian imprinted genes between chicken and human suggested that highly conserved gene clusters were selected long before these genes were recruited for genomic imprinting in mammals. Here we have applied in silico mapping of orthologous genes in pipid frog, zebrafish, spotted green and Japanese pufferfish to show considerable conservation of synteny in lower vertebrates. Physiological properties of some yeast strains

Twenty yeast strains have recently been isolated in pure cultures from natural and industrial sources and identified based mainly on physiological properties. The Church of Denmark was established in 1849 and is regarded as a pillar of traditional national identity. This status is being challenged by a steady decline in membership in recent decades. The Capital area is especially prone to low membership rates, and this regional pattern remains when the analysis controls for income and education. Furthermore, the local membership rate is also related to affiliation to the neighbourhood. Our detailed analysis is based on public register data on the individual level combined with geographical mapping information. Ecological risks of an old wood impregnation mill: application of the triad approach.

Although many studies deal with the distribution and mobility of chromated copper arsenate (CCA) metals in soil, the ecotoxicity of CCA-contaminated soils is rarely studied. The Triad approach was applied to determine the ecological risks posed by a CCA mixture at a decommissioned wood impregnation mill in southern Finland. Benthic Macroinvertebrate Communities in the Northern Tributaries of the “Iron Gates” Gorge (Danube River)

Abstract The paper presents the structure of the benthonic macro-invertebrates communities in the Berzasca, Sirinia, Liubcova, and Mraconia rivers. The results are based on quantitative benthos samples (95 samples), collected in July 2014 from 19 sampling stations within the study area. In longitudinal profile, the benthonic macro-invertebrate communities of the Sirinia, Liubcova and Berzasca rivers displays relatively large structural variability, while the communities of the Mraconia River displays smaller structural variability.
