Background: The red palm weevil (RPW) Rhynchophorus ferrugineus Olivier (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) is one of the major pests of palms. The larvae bore into the palm trunk and feed on the palm tender tissues and sap, leading the host tree to death. The gut microbiota of insects plays a remarkable role in the host life and understanding the relationship dynamics between insects and their microbiota may improve the biological control of insect pests. Building a benchmark through active surveillance of intensive care unit-acquired infections: the Italian network SPIN-UTI.

The Italian Nosocomial Infections Surveillance in Intensive Care Units (ICUs) (SPIN-UTI) project of the Italian Study Group of Hospital Hygiene (GISIO - SItI) was undertaken to ensure standardisation of definitions, data collection and reporting procedures using the Hospital in Europe Link for Infection Control through Surveillance (HELICS)-ICU benchmark. LAAE-14, a new anti-inflammatory drug, increases the survival ofCandida albicans-inoculated mice

LAAE-14, a lipidic acid-amido ether derivative, has been recently described as a new anti-inflammatory drug. We have studied the effect of treatment with this compound on the susceptibility of mice to in vivo experimental Candida albicans infection. ICR mice orally treated with LAAE-14 (25 mg kg(-1)) and experimentally intravenously infected showed a significantly increased survival as compared to control mice. In vitro, the compound did not inhibit the growth of C. albicans yeast cells or the yeast-to-hyphal transition. Very High Fascioliasis Intensities in Schoolchildren from Nile Delta Governorates, Egypt: The Old World Highest Burdens Found in Lowlands

Quantitative coprological analyses of children were performed in Alexandria and Behera governorates, Egypt, to ascertain whether individual intensities in the Nile Delta lowlands reach high levels as those known in hyperendemic highland areas of Latin America. Analyses focused on subjects presenting intensities higher than 400 eggs per gram of faeces (epg), the high burden cut-off according to WHO classification. A total of 96 children were found to shed between 408 and 2304 epg, with arithmetic and geometric means of 699.5 and 629.07 epg, respectively. Stability of chitin synthetase in cell-free preparations of a wild-type strain and a 'slime' variant of Neurospora crassa.

Chitin synthetase activity in cell-free preparations from a wild-type strain and a 'slime' variant of Neurospora crassa was monitored over many days in samples stored at 0 degrees C. Total activity in whole-cell-free extracts and low-speed supernatants from both organisms was very unstable, losing more than 90% of the initial activity on storage at 0 degrees C for 96 h. Chitin synthetase detection was not masked by chitinase activity present in the preparations. Platyzoan mitochondrial genomes.

Platyzoa is a putative lophotrochozoan (spiralian) subtaxon within the protostome clade of Metazoa, comprising a range of biologically diverse, mostly small worm-shaped animals. The monophyly of Platyzoa, the relationships between the putative subgroups Platyhelminthes, Gastrotricha and Gnathifera (the latter comprising at least Gnathostomulida, "Rotifera" and Acanthocephala) as well as some aspects of the internal phylogenies of these subgroups are highly debated.
