Photoelectron spectroscopy of thin discontinuous metal films deposited onto a sapphire substrate

1995

Abstract The charging of small metallic clusters forming discontinuous gold and gallium films, condensed in vacuum onto an insulating substrate (sapphire), was experimentally studied by the method of ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS) for a photon energy of 5.4 eV. It seems that the charging is due to electron emission as well as to electron transfer from metal islands to the empty electron states in the metal-insulator interface.

Optical Fibers Enter a New Space-Time Era

2016

We show experimentally a new type of parametric instability associated with the original phenomenon of beam self-cleaning in multimode fibers. Our experimental results are in good agreement with numerical solutions of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation.

Understanding Hawking Radiation from Simple Models of Atomic Bose-Einstein Condensates

2013

This chapter is an introduction to the Bogoliubov theory of dilute Bose condensates as applied to the study of the spontaneous emission of phonons in a stationary condensate flowing at supersonic speeds. This emission process is a condensed-matter analog of Hawking radiation from astrophysical black holes but is derived here from a microscopic quantum theory of the condensate without any use of the analogy with gravitational systems. To facilitate physical understanding of the basic concepts, a simple one-dimensional geometry with a stepwise homogenous flow is considered which allows for a fully analytical treatment.

Glass transitions and scaling laws within an alternative mode-coupling theory

2015

Idealized glass transitions are discussed within an alternative mode-coupling theory (TMCT) proposed by Tokuyama [Physica A 395, 31 (2014)]. This is done in order to identify common ground with and differences from the conventional mode-coupling theory (MCT). It is proven that both theories imply the same scaling laws for the transition dynamics, which are characterized by two power-law decay functions and two diverging power-law time scales. However, the values for the corresponding anomalous exponents calculated within both theories differ from each other. It is proven that the TMCT, contrary to the MCT, does not describe transitions with continuously vanishing arrested parts of the corre…

Quand les enseignants claquent la porte

2021
