Roads, travelling and communication in the Polish – Lithuanian Commonwealth in the 18th century. Russian and West European visitors’ perspective
2020
Efficient evaluation for a subset of recursive queries
1991
Abstract We consider the efficient evaluation of recursive queries in logic databases where the queries are expressed using a Datalog program (function-free Horn-clause program) that contains only regularly or linearly recursive predicates. Using well-known results on graph traversal, we develop an efficient algorithm for evaluating relations defined by a binary-chain program. We also present a transformation by which the evaluation of a subset of queries involving nonbinary relations can be reduced to the evaluation of binary-chain queries. This transformation is guided by the choice of bound arguments in the query, and the bindings are propagated through the program so that in the evaluat…
Design of Representations and Search Operators
2015
Successful and efficient use of evolutionary algorithms depends on the choice of genotypes and the representation – that is, the mapping from genotype to phenotype – and on the choice of search operators that are applied to the genotypes. These choices cannot be made independently of each other. This chapter gives recommendations on the design of representations and corresponding search operators and discusses how to consider problem-specific knowledge. For most problems in the real world, similar solutions have similar fitness values. This fact can be exploited by evolutionary algorithms if they ensure that the representations and search operators used are defined in such a way that simila…
Noncooperative dynamic games for inventory applications: A consensus approach
2008
We focus on a finite horizon noncooperative dynamic game where the stage cost of a single player associated to a decision is a monotonically nonincreasing function of the total number of players making the same decision. For the single-stage version of the game, we characterize Nash equilibria and derive a consensus protocol that makes the players converge to the unique Pareto optimal Nash equilibrium. Such an equilibrium guarantees the interests of the players and is also social optimal in the set of Nash equilibria. For the multi-stage version of the game, we present an algorithm that converges to Nash equilibria, unfortunately not necessarily Pareto optimal. The algorithm returns a seque…
A comparative thermogravimetric study of waterlogged archaeological and sound woods
2010
Waterlogged archaeological woods Pinus pinaster and Fagus sylvatica L. were analyzed by using TG technique. Degradation processes ascribable to the holocellulose decay were evidenced at nearly the same temperature for sound and archaeological samples. The residual matters at 600 and 900 °C of the sound woods are much lower than those of archaeological waterlogged woods in agreement with the presence of inorganic materials encapsulated during the burial into the marine environment. It was proposed a new protocol to rapidly calculate the maximum water content parameter, which is related to the wood degradation state. TG experiments at variable heating rates were performed to obtain kinetic pa…
