Analgesic Treatment of Bone Metastases

2013

The presence of bone metastases predicts the presence of pain and is the most common cause of cancer-related pain. Although bone metastases do not involve vital organs, they may determine deleterious effects in patients with prolonged survival. Bone fractures, hypercalcaemia, neurologic deficits and reduced activity associated with bone metastases result in an overall compromise in the patient’s quality of life. A metastasis is a consequence of a cascade of events including a progressive growth at the primary site, vascularization phase, invasion, detachment, embolization, survival in the circulation, arrest at the site of a metastasis, extravasion, evasion of host defense and progressive g…

La voce, il gesto, la scena. Elementi teatrali nelle commedie latine del XII e XIII secolo

2019

A molecular analysis of some Eastern Atlantic grouper from the Epinephelus and Mycteroperca genus

2005

Abstract Mitochondrial cytochrome b (397 bp) and 16S rDNA (516 bp) sequences analysis was used to investigate the phylogenetic relationships among some Eastern Atlantic Epinephelinae species. Six species of Epinephelus ( E. aeneus , E. caninus , E. costae , E. haifensis , E. marginatus and E. tauvina ) and two species of Mycteroperca ( M. rubra and M. fusca ) were analysed. Neighbour-joining and maximum-parsimony analysis support the paraphyletic grouping of the Epinephelus and Mycteroperca analysed. The maximum pairwise nucleotide divergence value in cyt b among all taxa was 0.196 between E. aeneus and E. marginatus and the minimum value was 0.006 between E. costae and M. rubra . Meanwhile…

Patterns of cercarial production from Diplostomum spathaceum: terminal investment or bet hedging?

2004

In the production of the infective cercariae of trematodes, the terminal investment hypothesis of life-history theory predicts that the rate of host exploitation and cercarial production should increase during the period of cercarial shedding since the reproductive value of the parasite decreases during this period. In contrast, a bet hedging hypothesis that focuses on the success of transmission when host contact rate is variable predicts that cercarial production should decrease in an attempt to keep the host alive for longer and thus would increase the probability of successful transmission. We examined these two hypotheses under laboratory conditions and recorded the production ofDiplos…

Post-transplantation tertiary hyperparathyroidism.

2012

Tertiary hyperparathyroidism is intended as a state of excessive autonomous excretion of parathyroid hormone after longstanding secondary hyperparathyroidism. It is a condition of a severe hyperparathyroidism that persists in the renal recipient despite a successful transplantation. The high levels of parathyroid hormone lead to a worsening of graft function accompanied by systemic symptoms. This article reviews the main aspects related to tertiary hyperparathyroidism from mechanism of pathogenesis to prevention and treatment, suggesting some indications about the best management of patients on a waiting list for kidney transplant.

Formation of Coherent Structures in Kolmogorov Flow with Stratification and Drag

2014

We study a weakly stratified Kolmogorov flow under the effect of a small linear drag. We perform a linear stability analysis of the basic state. We construct the finite dimensional dynamical system deriving from the truncated Fourier mode approximation. Using the Reynolds number as bifurcation parameter we build the corresponding diagram up to Re=100. We observe the coexistence of three coherent structures.

A free boundary problem stemmed from combustion theory. Part II: Stability, instability and bifurcation results

2002

AbstractWe deal with a free boundary problem, depending on a real parameter λ, in a infinite strip in R2, providing stability, instability and bifurcation.

The human chromophobe cell renal carcinoma: its probable relation to intercalated cells of the collecting duct.

1988

In the present study we have examined ten cases of the chromophobe type renal cell carcinoma. This type of tumor is distinguished from the other carcinomas of the kidney with light cytoplasm (formerly called “hypernephroid”) by (a) a positive Hale’s iron colloid stain of the cytoplasm, (b) the occurrence of numerous invaginated vesicles within the cytoplasm that resemble the invaginated vesicles of intercalated cells of the collecting duct system, and (c) a positive immunoreaction of both the plasma membrane and the cytoplasm with antibodies to the epithelial membrane antigen (EMA) and carbonic anhydrase C (CAC), respectively. Unlike oncocytomas, which also express CAC and EMA, the chromoph…
