Iron metabolism markers and l-arginine derivatives in coronary artery disease : highlighting, assessment and role of oxidative stress in acute myocar…
2015
Myocardial infarction (MI) is mostly caused by complications of atherosclerosis, whose the development would be initiated by a dysfunction of the vascular endothelium, characterized by an inflammatory condition and oxidative stress. In this pathogenesis, iron interacts at different levels and also has a major role in the development of endothelial dysfunction. Hepcidin and erythroferrone (discovered earlier as the myonectin/CTRP 15) participate in a major way in regulating certain stages of iron metabolism.Asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA), a marker of endothelial dysfunction is associated with most cardiovascular risk factors. Symmetrical dimethyl-arginine (SDMA), its stereoisomer, has an …
Of whales and men: Caitríona O’Reilly’s septentrional voyage in “The Sea Cabinet” (2006)
2021
International audience; The title-poem of Caitríona O’Reilly’s second collection – The Sea Cabinet – is a sequence of five ekphrastic pieces paying tribute to the city of Hull’s past as a major whaling port. As she perambulates through the galleries of the Maritime Museum, the Irish poetess is inspired by all the paraphernalia on display: skeletons of various species of whales, whaler’s tools but also journals, logbooks, paintings, illustrations and hundreds of examples of the folk art and mythemes of the whaler. From one poem to the next, O’Reilly depicts the northernness of the Arctic Ocean as eery but bewitching otherness, focusing on illustrations of Captain Graville’s whaling ship ice-…
Could the acid-base status of Antarctic sea urchins indicate a better-than-expected resilience to near-future ocean acidification?
2015
13 pages; International audience; Increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration alters the chemistry of the oceans towards more acidic conditions. Polar oceans are particularly affected due to their low temperature, low carbonate content and mixing patterns, for instance upwellings. Calcifying organisms are expected to be highly impacted by the decrease in the oceans' pH and carbonate ions concentration. In particular, sea urchins, members of the phylum Echinodermata, are hypothesized to be at risk due to their high-magnesium calcite skeleton. However, tolerance to ocean acidification in metazoans is first linked to acid–base regulation capacities of the extracellular fluids. No infor…
Fluidity and cytosolic Ca2+ concentration of circulating polymorphonuclear leukocytes at baseline in some chronic and acute clinical conditions: revi…
2016
Abstract. Objective: In this mini-review we describe the behavior of polymorphonuclear leukocyte (PMN) membrane fluidity and of PMN cytosolic Ca2+ concentration in some chronic and acute clinical conditions. Methods: PMN membrane fluidity was evaluated employing the fluorescent probe Fura-2AM, and PMN cytosolic Ca2+ concentration was evaluated using the fluorescent probe TMA-DPH. Results: From the determination of these two parameters investigated on resting PMNs, an almost constant increase in PMN cytosolic Ca2+ concentration in chronic clinical conditions, such as vascular atherosclerotic disease with and without diabetes mellitus, essential hypertension, chronic kidney disease, and diabe…

A multivariate approach of the factors impacting a small arctic glacier, Austre Lovén-Spitsberg
2015
International audience; Arctic glaciers are good indicators of the ongoing climate change as their dynamics are strongly linked to it. This study is focused on the Austre Lovén glacier, on the Brøgger peninsula in Spitsbergen (Svalbard, 79°N). The aim is to understand how contrasted climate and snow conditions over the course of a year can lead to multiple consequences, sometimes unexpected, on mass balance. In 2014, a negative budget was expected, but data analysis has shown the first positive mass balance in 7 years. The objective here is to (i) identify and qualify the combination of factors affecting an arctic glacier mass balance. Three primary indicators seem to display the greatest i…
Évaluation de l'influence des facteurs climatiques sur le bilan de masse du glacier Austre Loven (Spitsberg, 79°N) par une approche multivariée
2016
Arctic is a region where a quick warming is ongoing. Effects are particularly visible on glaciers of which dynamics is very sensitive to climate change. The goal of this study is to identify and rank the main climatological and nivological factors influencing the mass balance of a small arctic glacier in Svalbard using a statistical approach. To highlight spatial differences, cartography were then used. Results show that positive degree-days play an important role in explaining mass balance contrary to liquid precipitations that had a marginal effect over the studied period (2007-2014). Moreover, years with very different climatic conditions can lead to a similar mass balance.
