A Portable Readout System for Microstrip Silicon Sensors (ALIBAVA)

2009

A readout system for microstrip silicon sensors has been developed. This system is able to measure the collected charge in one or two microstrip silicon sensors by reading out all the channels of the sensor(s), up to 256. The system can operate either with non-irradiated and irradiated sensors as well as with n-type and p-type microstrip silicon sensors. Heavily irradiated sensors will be used at the Super Large Hadron Collider, so this system can be used to research the performance of microstrip silicon sensors in conditions as similar as possible to the Super Large Hadron Collider operating conditions. The system has two main parts: a hardware part and a software part. The hardware part a…

2020

This study examined the stability of reading difficulties (RD) from grades 2 to 6 and focused on the effects of measurement error and cut-off selection in the identification of RD and its stability with the use of simulations. It addressed methodological limitations of prior studies by (a) applying a model-based simulation analysis to examine the effects of measurement error and cut-offs in the identification of RD, (b) analyzing a non-English and larger sample, and (c) examining RD in both reading fluency and reading comprehension. Reading fluency and reading comprehension of 1,432 Finnish-speaking children were assessed in grades 2 and 6. In addition to the use of single cut-off points on…

Crystallization of late-stage MORB under varying water activities and redox conditions: Implications for the formation of highly evolved lavas and ox…

2018

Abstract In order to understand late magmatic processes that occur in the deep oceanic crust, we performed a phase-equilibria study in a representative late-stage system at a pressure of 200 MPa with a special focus on the role of water and oxygen fugacity. The starting composition for the experiments was evaluated based on a statistical approach using evolved fresh MORB glasses from the database PETDB highest in FeO and TiO2 (in average 17.92 wt% and 3.73 wt%, respectively), assumed to represent frozen liquids erupted at the seafloor generated by extensive differentiation of MORB. We conducted crystallization experiments in a range of temperatures from 850 to 1050 °C with water activities …

Addressing the importance of melanoma tumor‑infiltrating lymphocytes in disease progression and clinicopathological characteristics

2021

Tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) in primary cutaneous melanoma are considered to represent the host's antitumor immunological response; however, whether there are associations between TIL grade and histopathological characteristics and disease survival remains controversial. BRAF mutational status has been established as a routine screening method in advanced malignant melanoma, and worse prognosis rates have been demonstrated in patients harboring BRAF mutations. However, the general impact of BRAF mutational status on survival and histopathological characteristics is still debated. The aim of the present study was to compare the value of the assessment of TIL grade in stages I-II nod…

Cloning, chromosomal characterization and mapping of the NAD-dependent histone deacetylases gene sirtuin 1

2006

Sirtuin 1 (SIRT1) is a nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+)-dependent deacetylase, which belongs to the silent information regulator 2 (Sir2) family of sirtuin histone deacetylases (HDACs). The yeast Sir2 protein and its mammalian derivatives play a central role in epigenetic gene silencing, DNA repair and recombination, cell-cycle, microtubule organization, and in the regulation of aging. We have isolated and characterized the human Sirt1 genomic sequence, which spans a region of 33,660 bp and which has one single genomic locus. Determination of the exon-intron splice junctions established that SIRT1 is encoded by 9 exons ranging in size from 80 bp (exon 6) to 2,120 bp (exon 9). Charac…

Research and Clinical Routine in the next Century,Segregation or Cooperative Networks?

2001

Reading the daily newspaper one gets the impression that German universities and clinical research in particular are in a deep crisis, and that German professors are to be blamed for it. In medicine, additional insufficiencies of the system are obvious, beginning with corruption cases brought up against clinicians and ending with conflicts of interest due to the fact that clinical professors in addition to research and teaching devote much of their time to the special care of private patients. These headlines in the news tend to let us forget that during the last decade grant moneys for research projects stagnated whereas the number of grant applications has increased out of proportion. In …

Molecular Characterization of the Leucine Plasmid from Buchnera aphidicola , Primary Endosymbiont of the Aphid Acyrthosiphon pisum

2000

The complete sequence of the leucine plasmid of Buchnera aphidicola from the aphid Acyrthosiphon pisum (pLeu-BAp) is reported. Its gene organization was concordant with those of other leucine plasmids of Buchnera from aphids of the Aphidini and Macrosiphini tribes. Three inverted repeats are present in pLeu-BAp. Two of them are also present in pLeu from the family Aphididae: (i) SIR1, located downstream the leucine operon, resembles a rho-independent terminator of transcription, and (ii) LIR1, located upstream of the leucine operon, is suggested to be involved in transcription termination or messenger stability. The third, located near the putative ATGC repeats involved in the origin of rep…
