Molecular Evolution of Defense Pathways in Sponges: Self–Self-recognition and Fight against the Nonself

This article provides an overview of the immune system in poriferans at a tissue, cellular, and molecular level. Despite their simple organization, sponges have developed molecular mechanisms to recognize and resist foreign organisms. They are able to distinguish among food organisms, pathogens, and sponge-associated organisms. Although they lack specialized immune cells, sponges display molecular precursors, which are similar to molecular mediators involved in innate and adaptive immune systems, present in more evolutionarily advanced taxa, as outlined in succeeding articles in the Phylogeny section.
New stage-discharge relationship for inclined non-rectangular weirs

Abstract In this paper, the outflow process of inclined non-rectangular weirs is studied applying the dimensional analysis and the incomplete self-similarity theory. At first, a new stage-discharge equation, applicable for the non-rectangular weirs having a different geometrical shape (parabolic, semicircular, inverted semicircular), is theoretically deduced using a characteristic width. The interest in digital image comparison is steadily growing in the computer vision community. The definition of a suitable comparison measure for non-binary images is relevant in many image processing applications. Visual tasks like segmentation and classification require the evaluation of equivalence classes. Measures of similarity are also used to evaluate lossy compression algorithms and to define pictorial indices in image content based retrieval methods. We have studied the effect of inactivated microbial stimuli (Candida albicans, Candida glabrata, Saccharomyces boulardii, and Staphylococcus aureus) on the in vitro differentiation of lineage negative (Lin−) hematopoietic progenitor mouse cells. Purified Lin− progenitors were co-cultured for 7 days with the stimuli, and cell differentiation was determined by flow cytometry analysis. All the stimuli assayed caused differentiation toward the myeloid lineage. Effects of morphometric descriptor changes on statistical classification and morphospaces

Ten morphometric descriptors (five pairs of form and shape parameters) are used to describe the complex morphology of the first lower molar of two morphologically similar species, Microtus arvalis and M. agrestis. These descriptors are derived either from linear measurements or from outline analysis. The effects of these different descriptors on classical analysis as used in biology or palaeobiology are explored. First, the reliability of results in statistical classification is assessed. We consider the problem of detection of features in the presence of clutter for spatio-temporal point patterns. In previous studies, related to the spatial context, Kth nearest-neighbor distances to classify points between clutter and features. In particular, a mixture of distributions whose parameters were estimated using an expectation-maximization algorithm. Detection of disease clusters is an important tool in epidemiology that can help to identify risk factors associated with the disease and in understanding its etiology. In this article we propose a method for the detection of spatial clusters where the locations of a set of cases and a set of controls are available. The method is based on local indicators of spatial association functions (LISA functions), particularly on the development of a local version of the product density, which is a second-order characteristic of spatial point processes. This paper is concerned with the unsupervised classification of functional data by using mathematical morphology. Different morphological operators are used to extract relevant structures of the functions (considered as sets through their subgraph representations). These operators can be considered as preprocessing tools whose outputs are also functional data. Block Based Deconvolution Algorithm Using Spline Wavelet Packets

This paper presents robust algorithms to deconvolve discrete noised signals and images. The idea behind the algorithms is to solve the convolution equation separately in different frequency bands. This is achieved by using spline wavelet packets. The solutions are derived as linear combinations of the wavelet packets that minimize some parameterized quadratic functionals. Parameters choice, which is performed automatically, determines the trade-off between the solution regularity and the initial data approximation. The ideas are illustrated in detail with an interesting problem, the ratio of multinomial parameters, for which no model-based Bayesian analysis has been proposed.
