The measuring method for tests of horizontal two-phase gas–liquid flows, using optical and capacitance tomography

2009

Abstract The paper presents a measurement method in testing horizontal two-phase gas–liquid flows. It also describes the test stand including two tomography measurement systems. The optical and capacitance tomography systems can be used for measurements at the same time. It is necessary to apply two tomography systems working at the same time because of complexity of phenomena occurring in two-phase flows, and a wide range of applicability of the presented method. The optical tomography system in which a tested object is illuminated from five projections. The measurement of luminous intensity is changed into a discrete signal (0 or 1) in the detectors including 64 optical sensors. Next, the…

Improvement in fast particle track reconstruction with robust statistics

2014

The IceCube project has transformed one cubic kilometer of deep natural Antarctic ice into a Cherenkov detector. Muon neutrinos are detected and their direction inferred by mapping the light produced by the secondary muon track inside the volume instrumented with photomultipliers. Reconstructing the muon track from the observed light is challenging due to noise, light scattering in the ice medium, and the possibility of simultaneously having multiple muons inside the detector, resulting from the large flux of cosmic ray muons. This manuscript describes work on two problems: (1) the track reconstruction problem, in which, given a set of observations, the goal is to recover the track of a muo…

Updated precision measurement of the average lifetime of B hadrons

1996

The measurement of the average lifetime of B hadrons using inclusively reconstructed secondary vertices has been updated using both an improved processing of previous data and additional statistics from new data. This has reduced the statistical and systematic uncertainties and gives \tau_{\mathrm{B}} = 1.582 \pm 0.011\ \mathrm{(stat.)} \pm 0.027\ \mathrm{(syst.)}\ \mathrm{ps.} Combining this result with the previous result based on charged particle impact parameter distributions yields \tau_{\mathrm{B}} = 1.575 \pm 0.010\ \mathrm{(stat.)} \pm 0.026\ \mathrm{(syst.)}\ \mathrm{ps.}

Precision Muon Reconstruction in Double Chooz

2014

We describe a muon track reconstruction algorithm for the reactor anti-neutrino experiment Double Chooz. The Double Chooz detector consists of two optically isolated volumes of liquid scintillator viewed by PMTs, and an Outer Veto above these made of crossed scintillator strips. Muons are reconstructed by their Outer Veto hit positions along with timing information from the other two detector volumes. All muons are fit under the hypothesis that they are through-going and ultrarelativistic. If the energy depositions suggest that the muon may have stopped, the reconstruction fits also for this hypothesis and chooses between the two via the relative goodness-of-fit. In the ideal case of a thro…

Determining neutrino oscillation parameters from atmospheric muon neutrino disappearance with three years of IceCube DeepCore data

2014

We present a measurement of neutrino oscillations via atmospheric muon neutrino disappearance with three years of data of the completed IceCube neutrino detector. DeepCore, a region of denser instrumentation, enables the detection and reconstruction of atmospheric muon neutrinos between 10 GeV and 100 GeV, where a strong disappearance signal is expected. The detector volume surrounding DeepCore is used as a veto region to suppress the atmospheric muon background. Neutrino events are selected where the detected Cherenkov photons of the secondary particles minimally scatter, and the neutrino energy and arrival direction are reconstructed. Both variables are used to obtain the neutrino oscilla…

Determination of absolute internal conversion coefficients using the SAGE spectrometer

2016

Abstract A non-reference based method to determine internal conversion coefficients using the SAGE spectrometer is carried out for transitions in the nuclei of 154 Sm, 152 Sm and 166 Yb. The Normalised-Peak-to-Gamma method is in general an efficient tool to extract internal conversion coefficients. However, in many cases the required well-known reference transitions are not available. The data analysis steps required to determine absolute internal conversion coefficients with the SAGE spectrometer are presented. In addition, several background suppression methods are introduced and an example of how ancillary detectors can be used to select specific reaction products is given. The results o…

High performance detector head for PET and PET/MR with continuous crystals and SiPMs

2012

International audience; A high resolution PET detector head for small animal PET applications has been developed. The detector is composed of a 12 mm x 12 mm source continuous LYSO crystal coupled to a 64-channel monolithic SiPM matrix from FBK-irst. Crystal thicknesses of 5 mm and 10 mm have been tested, both yielding an intrinsic spatial resolution around 0.7 mm FWHM with a position determination algorithm that can also provide depth-of-interaction information. The detectors have been tested in a rotating system that makes it possible to acquire tomographic data and reconstruct images of 22Na sources. An image reconstruction method specifically adapted for continuous crystals has been emp…

Multiresolution based on weighted averages of the hat function I: Linear reconstruction techniques

1998

In this paper we analyze a particular example of the general framework developed in [A. Harten, {\it SIAM J. Numer. Anal}., 33 (1996) pp. 1205--1256], the case in which the discretization operator is obtained by taking local averages with respect to the hat function. We consider a class of reconstruction procedures which are appropriate for this multiresolution setting and describe the associated prediction operators that allow us to climb up the ladder from coarse to finer levels of resolution. In Part I we use data-independent (linear) reconstruction techniques as our approximation tool. We show how to obtain multiresolution transforms in bounded domains and analyze their stability with r…

Calibration of advanced Virgo and reconstruction of the gravitational wave signal h(t) during the observing run O2

2018

In August 2017, Advanced Virgo joined Advanced LIGO for the end of the O2 run, leading to the first gravitational waves detections with the three-detector network. This paper describes the Advanced Virgo calibration and the gravitational wave strain h(t) reconstruction during O2. The methods are the same as the ones developed for the initial Virgo detector and have already been described in previous publications, this paper summarizes the differences and emphasis is put on estimating systematic uncertainties. Three versions of the h(t) signal have been computed for the Virgo O2 run, an online version and two post-run reprocessed versions with improved detector calibration and reconstruction…
