Holographic recording properties and mechanisms are analyzed and compared in dielectric electrooptic crystals (EOC), dielectric colored alkali halide crystals (AHC) and amorphous semiconductor films (ASF) basing on author's investigations as well as on the literature data. Holographic photosensitivity parameters are introduced enabling the characterization of the recording mechanism efficiency independently of the particular optical and geometrical sample parameters, and allowing also for recording optimization. The kinetic behavior of insulin fibrillation is determined by heterogeneous nucleation pathways

When subjected to acidic conditions and high temperature, insulin is known to produce fibrils that display the common properties of disease amyloids. Thus, clarifying the mechanisms of insulin fibrillation can help the general understanding of amyloidal aggregation. Insulin fibrillation exhibits a very sharp time dependence, with a pronounced lag phase and subsequent explosive growth of amyloidal aggregates. Here we show that the initial stages of this process can be well described by exponential growth of the fibrillated proteins. This indicates that the process is mainly controlled by a secondary nucleation pathway.
Characteristics of the early flight phase in the Olympic ski jumping competition.

Early flight phase (approximately 40 m) of the athletes participating in the final round of the individual large hill ski jumping competition in Salt Lake City Olympics was filmed with two high-speed pan & tilt video cameras. The results showed that jumpers' steady flight position was almost completed within 0.5s. The most significant correlation with the length of the jump was found in the angle between the skis and body (r=.714, p.001 at 1.1s after the take-off). The influence of temperature on growth and proximate body composition of under yearling Lake Inari arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus (L.))

The growth of underyearling Lake Inari arctic char was studied in groups of fish held at 5.9, 8.7, 12.1, 15.1 and 18.0 °C for 31 days. Growth rate increased with increasing water temperature, reached a peak at 15.1 °C, and then declined. The temperature influence on relative growth was expressed as a non-linear function. There were differences in body composition between fish reared at different temperatures: percentage water being highest at the lowest temperature, whereas energy content was highest in the fish held at the three highest temperatures. The body wet weight explained most of the variance in water content and it is suggested that this may also apply to other body constituents.

The cross-sectional study has been based on the implementation of the Obstetric Appropriateness Evaluation Protocol (OAEP) in seven hospitals to determine inappropriate hospital admissions and days of stay. The outcomes were: inappropriateness of admission and "percentage of inappropriateness" for one hospitalization. A total number of 2196 clinical records were reviewed. The mean percentage of inappropriateness for hospitalization was 22%. The percentage of inappropriateness for the first 10 d of hospitalization peaked in correspondence of the fourth (42%). A reconstruction of sea surface temperature (SST) spanning 45 years (1966–2011) was developed from δ18O obtained from the aragonitic shells of Glycymeris glycymeris, collected from the Bay of Brest, France. Bivalve sampling was undertaken monthly between 2014 and 2015 using a dredge. In total, 401 live specimens and 243 articulated paired valves from dead specimens were collected, of which 24 individuals were used to reconstruct SST.
