We hypothesized that the effect of donor sex and the effect of age of blood on mortality would be most apparent in cardiac surgery patients. This open, randomised study was carried out in order to evaluate the safety and efficacy of a course of 5 intra-articular injections (one per week) of hyaluronic acid (HA), administered to patients with pain and joint stiffness resulting from immobilisation of the knee in a plaster cast. The study was made in comparison with an untreated control group. 30 patients of both genders, aged between 18 and 65 years, immobilised in a plaster cast for at least 20 days and presenting with pain and reduced mobility, were included in the study. Secondary haemorrhage is an important cause of brain injury following initial therapy of subdural haematoma (SDH). Early identification and treatment of secondary haemorrhage improves neurologic outcome. Near infrared light at a wavelength of 760 nm shows a high absorption for haemoglobin. The difference in absorbance of light ((Delta) OD) at the wavelength of 760 nm between both hemispheres is measured to detect SDH. Material and methods A cross-sectional, self-reporting questionnaire survey was conducted with the participation of 348 Croatian dentists. The questionnaire was designed to collect information on participants' work experience, place of work, their attitudes related to the treatment of IE-risk patients, knowledge and adherence to IE antibiotic prophylaxis guidelines.
