Recursion at the crossroads of sequence modeling, random trees, stochastic algorithms and martingales

This monograph synthesizes several studies spanning from dynamical systems in the statistical analysis of sequences, to analysis of algorithms in random trees and discrete stochastic processes. These works find applications in various fields ranging from biological sequences to linear regression models, branching processes, through functional statistics and estimates of risk indicators for insurances. All the established results use, in one way or another, the recursive property of the structure under study, by highlighting invariants such as martingales, which are at the heart of this monograph, as tools as well as objects of study.

Regional currencies and regional monetary zones in Latin America : what prospects ?

9 p.; This paper aims at drawing lessons from Keynes's plan presented at the Bretton Woods conference, in order to help improving current regional monetary agreements in Latin America. Some promoters of the Bank of the South and the New Financial Architecture in Latin America are proposing to implement a regional clearing system designed to allow a multilateral offsetting of the liabilities and assets generated in the reciprocal transactions of member countries in words that the British economist certainly would not have denied. This system would be very different from current regional payments aggreements that maintain an implicit reference to the US dollar as reserve or payment currency.

Finnish and German student teachers’ motivations for choosing teaching as a career : The first application of the FIT-Choice scale in Finland

This study introduces and validates the Finnish version of the FIT-Choice scale and uses the scale to explore Finnish undergraduate students' motivations for choosing teaching as a career as well as their perceptions of teaching as a profession in comparison to German student teachers. The results replicated the FIT-Choice structure both in Finland and Germany. Sample comparisons revealed that motivations for teaching and perceptions of the teaching profession reflected both differences and similarities between Finland and Germany. The study offers novel information on student teachers’ motivational structure. peerReviewed

AbstractResearch indicates that the dominant discourses of gender are ingrained in dual career (DC) practices critically influencing athletes’ motivation to construct a DC pathway. Tutkimuksen tarkoituksena oli selvittää huippu-urheilijoiden henkilökohtaisia kokemuksia siitä, mitkä motivaatiotekijät ovat edesauttaneet heidän uransa jatkumista urheilijapolun eri vaiheissa. Tavoitteena oli saada yksityiskohtaista informaatiota urheilijoiden kokemuksista ja näkemyksistä heidän urheiluaan tukevista asioista. Selvitimme tutkimuksen avulla myös urheilijoiden subjektiivisten näkemysten yhteyttä tunnettuihin motivaatioteorioihin ja aikaisemmissa tutkimuksissa esiin nousseisiin tuloksiin ja havaintoihin.
