Signed, Sealed, and Delivered with Trust: Non-Resident Citizens’ Experiences of Newly Adopted Postal Voting
2021
The COVID-19 pandemic has made it clear that the traditional “booth, ballot, and pen” model of voting, based on a specific location and physical presence, may not be feasible during a health crisis. This situation has highlighted the need to assess whether existing national electoral legislation includes enough instruments to ensure citizens’ safety during voting procedures, even under the conditions of a global pandemic. Such instruments, often grouped under the umbrella of voter facilitation or convenience voting, range from voting in advance and various forms of absentee voting (postal, online, and proxy voting) to assisted voting and voting at home and in hospitals and other healthcare …
Labour market reforms, institutions, and the quality of employment : should we all follow German Hartz model in reforming labour markets?
2015
Underemployment and aging population are major threats for several European economies. This study asks, whether partial labour market reforms, similar to German Hartz reforms, were good choices for other European countries, especially in terms of the quality of employment. Labour market liberalisation effects are assessed from macro-perspective on 25 OECD countries with fixed-effects panel data analysis. The effects for full-time, part-time, temporary, and low-wage employment are analysed separately for both genders, and also on young adults. The results find out strongly a gendered nature of labour market deregulation effects, which give support for dual labour market theory. There appears…

Semantically Closed Languages Reconsidered. Re-Reading Alfred Tarski
2019
The text shows that Alfred Tarski studied semantics to define a true sentence in a m a t e r i a l l y a d e q u a t e and f o r m a l l y c o r r e c t way, and in effect he defined the co-called semantically closed languages as a subset of formalized ones, in which the occurrence of the Liar paradox is imminent because of the features of the language used. This is one of the points of Tarski’s heritage where misunderstandings constantly occur among the readers of Tarski‘s work, and that is why the present paper may prove to be useful by presenting suitable excerpts from the original Tarski’s text. Tarski found additional limiting criteria applicable to formalised languages, which may prev…
Children’s Fruit and Vegetable Preferences Are Associated with Their Mothers’ and Fathers’ Preferences
2021
Children’s preference for fruit and vegetables must emerge during childhood. At children’s homes, mothers and fathers influence children’s developing food preferences with their own preferences and actions. The purpose of the study was to reveal the association parents have with their children’s fruit and vegetable preferences. The study was conducted in a sample of Finnish mothers and fathers of 3–5-year-old children. The participants were recruited, and questionnaires distributed through early childhood education and care centers in 2014 and 2015. The results showed considerable variance in the children’s preferences, and were more similar with their father’s, than their mother’s preferen…
