Modelling of light transmittance and reflectance in flat fluidized photoreactors

1992

In recent years several photon induced chemical reactions involving the use of a solid catalyst have been studied. Flat fluidized beds have proved to be promising devices for carrying out these photocatalytic reactions. There is therefore a need for the modelling of light interactions within such kinds of photoreactors. In this paper, a phenomenological model is proposed for simulating the light transmission and reflection in flat fluidized gas-solid photoreactors. A detailed description of the model is presented. The model predictions were compared with experimental data and a satisfactory agreement was found. Correlations were also suggested for the estimation of model parameters. Depuis …

Carry-over effects of conditions at the wintering grounds on breeding plumage signals in a migratory bird : roles of phenotypic plasticity and select…

2016

To understand the consequences of ever-changing environment on the dynamics of phenotypic traits, distinguishing between selection processes and individual plasticity is crucial. We examined individual consistency/plasticity in several male secondary sexual traits expressed during the breeding season (white wing and forehead patch size, UV reflectance of white wing patch and dorsal melanin coloration) in a migratory pied flycatcher (Ficedula hypoleuca) population over an 11-year period. Furthermore, we studied carry-over effects of three environmental variables (NAO, a climatic index; NDVI, a vegetation index; and rainfall) at the wintering grounds (during prebreeding moult) on the expressi…

Visualization of Keratin with Diffuse Reflectance and Autofluorescence Imaging and Nonlinear Optical Microscopy in a Rare Keratinopathic Ichthyosis.

2021

Keratins are one of the main fluorophores of the skin. Keratinization disorders can lead to alterations in the optical properties of the skin. We set out to investigate a rare form of keratinopathic ichthyosis caused by KRT1 mutation with two different optical imaging methods. We used a newly developed light emitting diode (LED) based device to analyze autofluorescence signal at 405 nm excitation and diffuse reflectance at 526 nm in vivo. Mean autofluorescence intensity of the hyperkeratotic palmar skin was markedly higher in comparison to the healthy control (162.35 vs. 51.14). To further assess the skin status, we examined samples from affected skin areas ex vivo by nonlinear optical micr…

Preliminary results on direct quantitative determination of cocaine in impregnated materials by infrared spectroscopy

2018

Abstract Partial least squares models were built for the direct determination of cocaine in seized impregnated smuggled materials. Measurements are based on the attenuated total reflectance middle infrared spectra (ATR-MIR) and diffuse reflectance spectra in the near range (DR-NIR) obtained directly from the surface of the impregnated materials. The aforementioned procedures offer fast, cheap and environmentally friendly green alternatives to the reference method based on the extraction of the drug and its quantification by gas chromatography. Additionally it has been verified that results found are statistically comparable with those obtained by the reference method with root mean square e…

Determination of in vivo skin moisture level by near-infrared reflectance spectroscopy

2015

Near-infrared spectroscopy has a potential for noninvasive determination of skin moisture level due to high water absorption. In this study, diffuse reflectance spectra of in vivo skin were acquired in the spectral range of 900 nm to 1700 nm by using near-infrared spectrometer, optical fiber and halogen bulb light source. Absorption changes after applying skin moisturizers were analyzed over time at different body sites. Results show difference in absorption when comparing dry and normal skin. Comparison of absorption changes over time after applying moisturizer at different body sites is analyzed and discussed. Some patterns of how skin reacts to different skin moisturizers are shown, alth…

Light absorption and electrical transport in Si:O alloys for photovoltaics

2010

Thin films (100-500 nm) of the Si:O alloy have been systematically characterized in the optical absorption and electrical transport behavior, by varying the Si content from 43 up to 100 at. %. Magnetron sputtering or plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition have been used for the Si:O alloy deposition, followed by annealing up to 1250 °C. Boron implantation (30 keV, 3-30× 1014 B/cm2) on selected samples was performed to vary the electrical sheet resistance measured by the four-point collinear probe method. Transmittance and reflectance spectra have been extracted and combined to estimate the absorption spectra and the optical band gap, by means of the Tauc analysis. Raman spectroscopy was …

CO2 to Liquid Fuels: Photocatalytic Conversion in a Continuous Membrane Reactor

2018

The photocatalytic reduction of CO, into value-added chemicals using sunlight is a promising approach to promote energy-bearing products, mitigating the adverse effects of anthropogenic CO2 emissions. In this work, exfoliated C3N4 was incorporated into Nafion matrix and used in a continuous photocatalytic reactor for converting CO2 into liquid fuels. Comprehensive structural and morphological diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), FT-IR, ATR-IR, and SEM measurements were performed for C3N4-loaded Nafion membrane and then compared with those of a Nafion membrane without any catalyst. The synergic effect of C3N4 organic catalyst embedded in a Nafion dense matrix and a continuous operating mo…

Electron transfer in ZnO–Fe2O3 aqueous slurry systems and its effects on visible light photocatalytic activity

2017

ZnFex (x = 0.025, 0.05, and 0.1) nanocomposites and pure ZnO and Fe2O3 photocatalysts were synthesized by a simple sol–gel route and characterized by means of specific surface area (SSA) analysis, X-ray diffraction (XRD), diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), and transmission electron microscopy/energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (TEM/EDS). Their photocatalytic activity was investigated under visible light by using methylene blue (MB) and benzoic acid (BA) as model compounds. Coupling ZnO and Fe2O3 results in higher photocatalytic activity with respect to the pure materials. Photoelectrochemical characterization performed in slurry systems allowed the elucidation of the electronic struc…

The influence of Al doping on the photocatalytic activity of nanostructured ZnO: The role of adsorbed water

2018

Abstract Al doped ZnO nanoparticles (labeled as x% A-ZnO, x = 0.0, 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5) were synthesized by a simple sol-gel method, characterized and tested as photocatalysts for the degradation of a model compound under UV-light irradiation. Diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) and photoelectrochemical analysis have been performed to evidence their optical and electronic behavior. The structural features of the powders were highlighted by means of specific surface area (SSA) analysis, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) and Raman spectroscopy. Al doping results in enhanced photocatalytic activity of the modified powders with respect to pure ZnO. In particular, the h…
