Climate regimes and yearly streamflow frequency analysis in Sicily
2008
Yearly streamflow frequency analysis is performed in Sicily, Mediterranean’s largest island, using the index flow procedure, i.e. fitting a single probability distribution function (pdf) to the available yearly flow data scaled by their mean. This requires 1) the identification of homogeneous regions where L-moments’ observed variability can be ascribed to sample variability only, and 2) the estimation of mean annual streamflow by multiple regression analysis with some significant climatic and morphologic covariates. Rather than having defined geographical boundaries, the identified homogeneous regions should gather basins sharing similar morphologic and climatic features. Steps 1) and 2) a…

Per la notevole biodiversità del patrimonio vegetale e per le numerose Civiltà susseguitesi nel corso della storia, la Sicilia è un’area di particolare interesse per gli aspetti etnobotanici. Inequality of Spanish household expenditure for the 2006-2016 period- are we converging?
2019
The depth and persistence of the Great Recession that started in 2008 had a considerable impact on income distribution and inequality. Therefore, studies of living standards and evolution of income inequality are trend topics nowadays. Our goal was to estimate the impact of the economic crises on household expenditure and the trends and evolution of regional inequality. We applied our analysis to the Spanish case based on Household Budget Survey data from Instituto Nacional de Estadística (INE, the National Statistics Institute) and the period of eleven years between 2006 and 2016. A model that showed good results in modelling income was the biparametric gamma model, which is further very u…
Access to Higher Education: An Instrument for Fair Societies?
2019
Access to higher education (HE) has a long history. To offer a view on the current debates and worldwide issues regarding access to HE, this editorial depicts how the control of educational access has historically been used as an instrument of governance at the interface of two processes: social stratification and the territorialisation of politics. Access to HE has remained embedded in these large structural processes even though HE has expanded from a highly elitist institution into mass education systems with equity of educational opportunities having become a desirable goal across societies. Analysing these processes helps understand the complex mechanisms producing inequalities in HE t…
Esplorare la povertà urbana in una prospettiva mediterranea: il caso del quartiere CEP a Palermo
2020
The paper addresses the issue of the multiple dimensions of urban poverty through mixed analyses carried out in the CEP neighborhood of Palermo. The article tries to avoid incurring the dichotomy between the Global North and South and adopts a Mediterranean perspective, attempting to describe the neighborhood from below and starting from the voices of its youngest inhabitants. In light of the most recent pandemic events, the issue of urban poverty deserves to be explored with renewed academic debates.
