Prenatal cocaine exposure alters spontaneous and cocaine-induced motor and social behaviors.

The abuse of cocaine in pregnant women could affect emotional behaviors in their descendents. The aim of this work was to evaluate the effects of prenatal cocaine exposure on spontaneous and cocaine-induced motor and social behaviors in mice. Three kinds of prenatal treatment were used: non-treated animals; mice treated daily with physiological saline during the last week of pregnancy; and finally, those treated with cocaine (25 mg/kg) during the same period. Mammary pheromone-induced odour learning influences sucking behaviour and milk intake in the newborn rabbit

Newborn rabbits, Oryctolagus cuniculus, locate their mother's nipples through typical orocephalic movements elicited by odour stimuli, in particular by the mammary pheromone (MP). The MP also promotes neonatal odour learning: after single pairing with the MP, an initially neutral odorant becomes able to elicit sucking-related head-searching/oral-grasping movements. Interannual Variability of Biomass (SMOS Vegetation Optical Depth) Over the Contiguous United States

Interannual variability in biomass represented by SMOS vegetation optical depth (VOD) and precipitation was assessed over the Contiguous United States. The greatest interannual variability in both VOD and precipitation occurred in shrubs and herbaceous (grasslands), with forests the least variable. At a continental scale, VOD was strongly correlated with annual precipitation. Results showed a significant correlation coefficient (∼ 0.93) between interannual variability of precipitation and biomass, indicating that the interannual variability of precipitation could be a good predictor of the interannual variability of biomass.

Mutual nonlinear prediction of cardiovascular variability series: Comparison between exogenous and autoregressive exogenous models

A model-based approach to perform mutual nonlinear prediction of short cardiovascular variability series is presented. The approach is based on identifying exogenous (X) and autoregressive exogenous (ARX) models by K-nearest neighbors local linear approximation, and estimates the predictability of a series given the other as the squared correlation between original and predicted values of the series. Consequently, an increasingly large number of individuals are being listed as authors in the bylines, which complicates the proper attribution of credit and responsibility to individual authors. Predatory journals enter biomedical databases through public funding

Predatory publishing is an international, cross disciplinary threat to the integrity of the scientific system • A worrying number of articles published in predatory journals are indexed in biomedical databases such as PubMed, the free access biomedical database maintained by the National Library of Medicine • Public funding, under open access policies, seems to be the mechanism by which articles are displayed in PubMed. • Providing guidance to publicly funded authors on how to publish their work in legitimate open-access venues will likely stop the wasteful use of public money to cover the fees of predatory journals.

International audience; Orchestia cavimana is a terrestrial crustacean, which cyclically stores calcium in diverticula of the midgut, in the form of calcified amorphous concretions. These concretions are associated with a proteinaceous matrix, the main constituent of the soluble matrix is Orchestin, an acidic calcium-binding protein [Testenière et al., Biochem. J. 361 (2002) 327-335]. In the present paper, we clearly demonstrate that Orchestin is phosphorylated on serine and tyrosine residues, but that calcium binding only occurs via the phosphoserine residues. A case of possible vocal convergence between frogs and a bird in Himalayan torrents

Several species of frogs of the subgenusRana (Paa) and one species of bird of the genusPhylloscopus, which are calling in or near torrents in the Himalayas, show striking similarities in their vocal signals: 1) The calls are composed of short sequences of notes separated by periods of silence; 2) the notes are pure, short, and have a narrow frequency band; 3) within each sequence, the notes are rhythmically emitted. We suggest that these characteristics may be adaptive, the convergence being caused by the selective pressure of the acoustic constraints of the biotope.
