Image transmission through dynamic scattering media by single-pixel photodetection

2014

Smart control of light propagation through highly scattering media is a much desired goal with major technological implications. Since interaction of light with highly scattering media results in partial or complete depletion of ballistic photons, it is in principle impossible to transmit images through distances longer than the extinction length. Nevertheless, different methods for image transmission, focusing, and imaging through scattering media by means of wavefront control have been published over the past few years. In this paper we show that single-pixel optical systems, based on compressive detection, can also overcome the fundamental limitation imposed by multiple scattering to suc…

A pilot study on the differences in wavefront aberrations between two ethnic groups of young generally myopic subjects

2008

A comparative population-based cross-sectional study design was used to examine the prevalence of wavefront patterns in two different ethnic groups, and the relationship of these patterns with ocular biometrics and gender. The Shin–Nippon SRW5000 open field autorefractor, the Wavefront Analysis Supported Customized Ablation (WASCA) wavefront analyser and the IOLMaster were used to determine wavefront aberrations, mean spherical equivalent (SE) refractive error and axial length (AL). Seventy-four eyes from 74 young healthy subjects (44 British Asians, 30 Caucasians; 36 men, 38 women; mean age 22.51 ± 3.89 years) with mean SE averaging )1.90 ± 2.76 D (range )10.88 to +2.19 D) were examined. R…

Simple method for measuring bilayer system optical parameters

2012

A simple method for measuring bilayer system refractive indexes and thicknesses in the low absorbing part of spectra is demonstrated. The method is based on application of Savitzky - Golay smoothing filters and interference fringe separation in the reflected or transmitted spectra of the bilayer system. The refractive indexes and thicknesses are extracted from the wavelengths corresponding to extreme points in the spectrum. Due to the fact that wavelength difference of extreme points in the analyzed spectrum is defined by the product of both, the layer thickness and refractive index, one must generate an appropriate initial guess of these parameters. For refractive index approximation two d…

Somatic Symptoms among Children and Adolescents in Poland: A Confirmatory Factor Analytic Study of the Children Somatization Inventory.

2013

The aim of the present study was to examine the factor structure and psychometric properties of the short version of the Children’s Somatization Inventory (CSI-24) in Poland. The CSI-24 is a self-report questionnaire designed to assess somatic symptoms in children and adolescents. A total of 733 children and adolescents, aged 12 to 17 years, participated in this research. The participants for this study were recruited from urban and suburban schools of Opole province in South Western Poland. In addition to the CSI-24, all participants completed the Spence Children’s Anxiety Scale (SCAS) and the Strength and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ). The bifactor model that included the three domain-…

Informing, engaging, mobilizing or interacting: Searching for a European model of web campaigning

2011

This study presents data from content analyses of the websites of all parties that stood in the 2009 European parliamentary elections in France, Germany, Great Britain and Poland. It cross-nationally examines the main functions of the websites, the adoption of Web 1.0 and Web 2.0 features, and the political and cultural factors that determine parties’ online communication. The findings show that while the main website function varies across countries, Web 1.0 is still the dominant mode of campaigning. Moreover, offline inequalities within and between nations determine differences in parties’ individual online strategies: specifically, major parties in states with long histories of democrac…

Element weighted Kemeny distance for ranking data

2021

Preference data are a particular type of ranking data that arise when several individuals express their preferences over a finite set of items. Within this framework, the main issue concerns the aggregation of the preferences to identify a compromise or a “consensus”, defined as the closest ranking (i.e. with the minimum distance or maximum correlation) to the whole set of preferences. Many approaches have been proposed, but they are not sensitive to the importance of items: i.e. changing the rank of a highly-relevant element should result in a higher penalty than changing the rank of a negligible one. The goal of this paper is to investigate the consensus between rankings taking into accou…

Consensus measures for preference rankings with ties: an approach based on position weighted Kemeny distance

2018

Preference data are a particular type of ranking data where some subjects (voters, judges, ...) give their preferences over a set of alternatives (items). It happens, in most of the real cases, that some items receive the same preference by a judge, giving raise to a ranking with ties. The purpose of our paper is to investigate on the consensus between rankings with ties taking into account the importance of swapping elements belonging to the top (or to the bottom) of the ordering (position weights). Combining the structure of the Taux proposed by Emond and Mason and the class of weighted Kemeny-Snell distances, we propose a position weighted rank correlation coefficient to compare rankings…

Intervención sindical y salud laboral en la Unión Europea: dimensiones, cobertura e impacto

2018

The determining factors of workers’ quality of employment and occupational health are many and different, including from those of a structural nature (productive sector, size of company, labour organization, type of contract) and contextual (economic cycle, normative regulation ), to those with an institutional dimension (system of labor relations, union participation, collective bargaining, Labor Inspection) and, even, cultural (business management model, preventive training programs and risk assessment). Regarding the influence of the first group of such factors (structural and contextual) on the evolution of occupational accidents, there is already important specialized literature and em…

The EU, Non-state Actors, and Peace-Support Policies in the Western Balkans

2015

This article focuses on the contribution of the EU towards and through NGOs and civil society groups in rebuilding the condition of peace and security in the post-war environment of the Western Balkans. Looking comparatively at the aid provided through public channels and through the NGO and civil society sector to Bosnia-Herzegovina, the Former Yugoslavia Republic of Macedonia, Serbia, and Kosovo, the article identifies the place given by EU institutions to non-state actors and how international donors’ preferences have changed over the years. The result of the analysis is that, despite rhetoric on the importance of local ownership and of civil society actors, EU institutions comparatively…
