The Agony of Choice: Acceptance, Efficiency, and Psychometric Properties of Questionnaires With Different Numbers of Response Options

2021

Questionnaires are one of the most important tools in psychological assessment, yet the impact of different numbers of response options on psychometric properties of questionnaires is limited. This study extends existing research by analyzing respondents’ acceptance of and the efficiency of different numbers of response options and replicate findings on reliability and validity. We studied these questions in 540 respondents who filled out the Big Five Inventory–2 and the Emotion Regulation Questionnaire. Two response options, 11 response options and the visual analog scale showed disadvantages in acceptance compared with the original number of response options. The completion time increase…

Psychometric Properties of the Multidimensional Fatigue Inventory (MFI-20), Derived From Seven Samples

2019

Abstract Context Fatigue is a frequent symptom in patients suffering from chronic diseases. The Multidimensional Fatigue Inventory (MFI-20) is often used to measure fatigue. The aim of this article was to test the scale structure of the questionnaire. Methods The MFI-20 data were obtained from seven samples, including general population samples and samples of patients with different diseases (N between 122 and 1993). Five confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) models were tested for each sample. Results The scale structure postulated by the original test authors could not be confirmed by the CFAs. The inclusion of a method factor which considers the positive versus the negative orientation of t…

Systematic review and critical appraisal of Childhood Trauma Questionnaire - Short Form (CTQ-SF).

2021

Abstract Background Child maltreatment is a complex and multidimensional construct that encompasses a great number of risk factors. The Childhood Trauma Questionnaire — Short Form, one of the most widely used and validated instruments to assess childhood maltreatment in the past ten years, is a retrospective instrument that assesses several types of childhood abuse and maltreatment which is divided into five dimensions. Objective The objectives of this systematic review are to critically appraise, compare, and summarize the methodological quality and psychometric properties of published research articles validating the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire — Short Form utilizing the COSMIN checkli…

Translation and Reliability of the Preliminary Spanish Version of the Sport Imagery Questionnaire

2012

The purpose of this study was to examine the reliability of the preliminary Spanish version of the Sport Imagery Questionnaire (SIQ). The SIQ was developed to examine five cognitive and motivational functions of imagery use. Participants were 81 athletes competing in soccer (n = 43) and roller skating (n = 38), ranging in age from 14 to 29 years (M = 18.10, SD = 3.16). Reliability was evaluated through internal consistency analyses of the scale. Cronbach’s alpha coefficients were high indicating that the scale is a reliable instrument for the measurement of imagery use in Spanish athletes. Further psychometric research should now examine factor structure and imagery use across competitive l…

Working conditions, job strain, and traffic safety among three groups of public transport drivers

2018

Background: Working conditions and psychosocial work factors have acquired an important role explaining the well-being and performance of professional drivers, including those working in the field of public transport. This study aimed to examine the association between job strain and the operational performance of public transport drivers and to compare the expositions with psychosocial risk at work of three different types of transport workers: taxi drivers, city bus drivers, and interurban bus drivers. Method: A sample of 780 professional drivers was drawn from three transport companies in Bogota (Colombia). The participants answered the Job Content Questionnaire and a set of sociodemogra…

Assessing mentalization in psychotherapy: first validation of the Mentalization Imbalances Scale

2018

The aim of this study was to provide data on the preliminary validation of a clinician-report multidimensional assessment measure of mentalization (Mentalization Imbalances Scale, MIS). A random national sample of psychotherapists (N=190) completed the MIS to identify mentalization imbalances, and the Personality Disorder Checklist to assess the personality disorders (PDs) of randomly selected patients currently in their care. Factor analysis confirmed the presence of six factors that represented different imbalances of mentalization: cognitive, affective, automatic, external, imbalance toward others, and imbalance toward self. We found several significant relationships between patients’ me…

Changing driver behavior during floods: Testing a novel e-health intervention using implementation imagery

2021

Abstract We tested the efficacy of a novel implementation imagery intervention (N = 460) in promoting safer intentions regarding driving into floodwater post-intervention, and at a four-week follow-up using a pre-registered randomized controlled design. Results showed that the intervention reduced intentions and subjective norms regarding driving into floodwater. The control condition also improved on intentions and subjective norms, but the changes appeared to only be maintained at the follow-up for the intervention group and the between group difference at the follow-up was not significant based on our pre-specified cutoff level for statistical significance of 0.01. Results also indicated…

Development and electronic validation of the revised Cystic Fibrosis Questionnaire (CFQ-R Teen/Adult)

2018

Abstract Background The Cystic Fibrosis Questionnaire-Revised (CFQ-R+14) is a disease-specific, health-related quality of life instrument for cystic fibrosis (CF) patients ≥14years. We have developed a Spanish electronic version of the CFQ-R (e-CFQ-R+14 Spain). Our aim was to compare the paper and electronic versions and to validate the electronic version. Methods Fifty CF patients completed the study. All answered the paper and electronic versions on day 1 and repeated the e-CFQR version 15days later. Results Concordance between the electronic and paper copy versions was high, with correlations above 0.9 in all domains. Test-retest reliability of the e-CFQ-R results was strong, with coeffi…

Questionnaires, spirometry and PEF monitoring in epidemiological studies on elderly respiratory patients.

2003

Questionnaires are the most used subjective instrument of measurement in respiratory epidemiology. The standardisation of the questionnaires aims to limit bias by maximising validity and reliability, and comparability. Within the European Union project BIOMED1, a compendium of respiratory standard questionnaires (CORSQ) was developed for adults covering 18 topics from general information to early life events, through environmental risk factors and respiratory symptoms and diseases. Reliable spirometry data needs a rigorous quality control programme, as in the "Salute Respiratoria nell'Anziano" (Sa.R.A.) project, Italian for "Respiratory Health in the Elderly". Reproducibility rates were 95.…
