Restriction of odd degree characters and natural correspondences

2016

Let $q$ be an odd prime power, $n > 1$, and let $P$ denote a maximal parabolic subgroup of $GL_n(q)$ with Levi subgroup $GL_{n-1}(q) \times GL_1(q)$. We restrict the odd-degree irreducible characters of $GL_n(q)$ to $P$ to discover a natural correspondence of characters, both for $GL_n(q)$ and $SL_n(q)$. A similar result is established for certain finite groups with self-normalizing Sylow $p$-subgroups. We also construct a canonical bijection between the odd-degree irreducible characters of $S_n$ and those of $M$, where $M$ is any maximal subgroup of $S_n$ of odd index; as well as between the odd-degree irreducible characters of $G = GL_n(q)$ or $GU_n(q)$ with $q$ odd and those of $N_{G}…

On a representation theorem for finitely exchangeable random vectors

2016

A random vector $X=(X_1,\ldots,X_n)$ with the $X_i$ taking values in an arbitrary measurable space $(S, \mathscr{S})$ is exchangeable if its law is the same as that of $(X_{\sigma(1)}, \ldots, X_{\sigma(n)})$ for any permutation $\sigma$. We give an alternative and shorter proof of the representation result (Jaynes \cite{Jay86} and Kerns and Sz\'ekely \cite{KS06}) stating that the law of $X$ is a mixture of product probability measures with respect to a signed mixing measure. The result is "finitistic" in nature meaning that it is a matter of linear algebra for finite $S$. The passing from finite $S$ to an arbitrary one may pose some measure-theoretic difficulties which are avoided by our p…

Varieties of superalgebras of almost polynomial growth

2011

Abstract Let V gr be a variety of superalgebras and let c n gr ( V gr ) , n = 1 , 2 , …  , be its sequence of graded codimensions. Such a sequence is polynomially bounded if and only if V gr does not contain a list of five superalgebras consisting of a commutative superalgebra, the infinite dimensional Grassmann algebra and the algebra of 2 × 2 upper triangular matrices with trivial and natural Z 2 -gradings. In this paper we completely classify all subvarieties of the varieties generated by these five superalgebras, by giving a complete list of finite dimensional generating superalgebras.

Conditional Random Quantities and Compounds of Conditionals

2013

In this paper we consider finite conditional random quantities and conditional previsions assessments in the setting of coherence. We use a suitable representation for conditional random quantities; in particular the indicator of a conditional event $E|H$ is looked at as a three-valued quantity with values 1, or 0, or $p$, where $p$ is the probability of $E|H$. We introduce a notion of iterated conditional random quantity of the form $(X|H)|K$ defined as a suitable conditional random quantity, which coincides with $X|HK$ when $H \subseteq K$. Based on a recent paper by S. Kaufmann, we introduce a notion of conjunction of two conditional events and then we analyze it in the setting of cohere…

Conditional Random Quantities and Iterated Conditioning in the Setting of Coherence

2013

We consider conditional random quantities (c.r.q.’s) in the setting of coherence. Given a numerical r.q. X and a non impossible event H, based on betting scheme we represent the c.r.q. X|H as the unconditional r.q. XH + μH c , where μ is the prevision assessed for X|H. We develop some elements for an algebra of c.r.q.’s, by giving a condition under which two c.r.q.’s X|H and Y|K coincide. We show that X|HK coincides with a suitable c.r.q. Y|K and we apply this representation to Bayesian updating of probabilities, by also deepening some aspects of Bayes’ formula. Then, we introduce a notion of iterated c.r.q. (X|H)|K, by analyzing its relationship with X|HK. Our notion of iterated conditiona…

A Hypergraph Based Framework for Intelligent Tutoring of Algebraic Reasoning

2013

The translation of word problems into equations is one of the major difficulties for students regarding problem solving. This paper describes both a domain-specific knowledge representation and an inference engine based on hypergraphs that permits intelligent student supervision of this stage of the solving process. The framework presented makes it possible to simultaneously: a) represent all potential algebraic solutions to a given word problem; b) keep track of the student’s actions; c) provide automatic remediation; and d) determine the current state of the resolution process univocally. Starting from these ideas, we have designed an intelligent tutoring system (ITS). An experimental eva…

WQ*-algebras of measurable operators

2012

Every C*-algebra \(\mathfrak{A}\) has a faithful *-representation π in a Hilbert space \(\mathcal{H}\). Consequently it is natural to pose the following question: under which conditions, the completion of a C*-algebra in a weaker than the given one topology, can be realized as a quasi *-algebra of operators? The present paper presents the possibility of extending the well known Gelfand — Naimark representation of C*-algebras to certain Banach C*-modules.

Fixed point theory for cyclic weak ϕ-contraction in fuzzy metric spaces

2012

In this paper, we introduce cyclic weak $\phi-$contractions in fuzzy metric spaces and utilize the same to prove some results on existence and uniqueness of fixed point in fuzzy metric spaces. Some related results are also proved besides furnishing illustrative examples.

Quantum Relaxation Time in Asymmetric Bistable Potential

2010

Quantum tunneling effect occurs often in condensed matter physics, examples are JJs, heteronanostructures, etc.. The tunneling effect plays an important role in the nonlinear relaxation time from a metastable state in an open quantum system, interacting with a thermal bath. Symmetrical and asymmetric bistable systems are good quantum model systems for analysis of the "superconducting quantum bits" and decoherence phenomena. To obtain very long coherence times in the presence of interaction between the qubit and the noisy environment is one of the greatest challenges of physics. The inf1uence of the environment in quantum tunneling has been in the focus of intense research over the last year…

Effect of parametric variation of center frequency and bandwidth of morlet wavelet transform on time-frequency analysis of event-related potentials

2017

Time-frequency (TF) analysis of event-related potentials (ERPs) using Complex Morlet Wavelet Transform has been widely applied in cognitive neuroscience research. It has been widely suggested that the center frequency (fc) and bandwidth (σ) should be considered in defining the mother wavelet. However, the issue how parametric variation of fc and σ of Morlet wavelet transform exerts influence on ERPs time-frequency results has not been extensively discussed in previous research. The current study, through adopting the method of Complex Morlet Continuous Wavelet Transform (CMCWT), aims to investigate whether time-frequency results vary with different parametric settings of fc and σ. Besides, …
