Metabolic disorders during pregnancy and postpartum cardiometabolic risk

2018

Hormonal changes during pregnancy can trigger gestational diabetes (GDM), which is constantly increasing. Its main characteristic is pronounced insulin resistance, but it appears to be a multifactorial process involving several metabolic factors; taken together, the latter leads to silent or clinically evident cardiovascular (CV) events. Insulin resistance and central adiposity are of crucial importance in the development of metabolic syndrome, and they appear to correlate with CV risk factors, including hypertension and atherogenic dyslipidaemia. Hypertensive disease of pregnancy (HDP) is more likely to be an accompanying co-morbidity in pregnancies complicated with GDM. There is still inc…

DC01 steel corrosion resistance in cathodic polarization

2016

Celem prowadzonych badań było okreœlenie odporności korozyjnej stali DC01 poddanej katodowej polaryzacji w zmiennych warunkach. Elektrochemiczne pomiary służące do oceny odpornoœci korozyjnej stali nienawodorowanej poddanej katodowej polaryzacji przeprowadzono metodami obejmującymi pomiar potencjału obwodu otwartego i zarejestrowania zależności i=f(E) podczas badań polaryzacyjnych w trójelektrodowym układzie pomiarowym.

Increased Auxin Content and Altered Auxin Response in Barley Necrotic Mutant nec1

2012

The role of hormone crosstalk in plant immunity is lately emerging as significant topic of plant physiology. Although crosstalk between salicylic acid and auxin affects plant disease resistance, molecular mechanisms of this process have not yet been uncovered in details. Mutations disrupting cyclic nucleotide-gated ion channel 4 (CNGC4) affect SA-mediated disease resistance in barley Hordeum vulgare and in A. thaliana. Significantly, decreased stomatal apertures of barley CNGC4 mutant nec1 and dwarfed stature of A. thaliana CNGC4 mutant dnd2 suggest that nonfunctional CNGC4 might be affecting also auxin signaling. Excised coleoptile elongation, stomatal conductance, and cell size measuremen…

Thermodynamically induced shear degradation

1988

The shear degradation of polymers in semiconcentrated solutions is viewed as a function of solvent quality. It is shown that the deterioration of the thermodynamic quality of the solvent leads to a marked flow resistance due to an increasing number of contacts between the chains. This may be probed by viscosimetric measurements as well as by degradation experiments (“thermodynamically induced shear degradation”). For a detailed discussion of this phenomenon the experimental setup for the mechanochemical experiment is outlined first, followed by a survey of the kinetics of chain scission. Finally, experiments mostly obtained on polystyrene in the theta-solvent trans-decalin are discussed. Th…

Polyisoprene-carbon black nanocomposites as tensile strain and pressure sensor materials

2004

Abstract Electrically conductive polymer composites (ECPC) are shown as prospective large-size flexible pressure and stretch sensors for detecting of dangerous deformations and vibrations of vehicle parts. Reversible change of resistance dependent on stretch and pressure is obtained in electro-conductive polymer nanocomposites. At certain concentrations of carbon nano-particles a change of electrical resistance by more than four orders is observed at 40% relative stretch. The maximum sensitivity of nanocomposites is observed in the vicinity of the transition of electro-conductive percolation. Nanocomposites exhibit a very weak semiconductor-like temperature dependence of resistance. The ten…

Photo-re-stabilisation of recycled post-consumer films from greenhouses

2004

The photo-oxidation behaviour of recycled post-consumer films from greenhouses has been studied in order to evaluate the environmental resistance of these secondary materials and the effect of some stabilising agents. The presence of the UV absorber slows down the weathering of the post-consumer materials. After about 1000 h of accelerated weathering the unstabilised post-consumer material becomes brittle, while the re-stabilised post-consumer film becomes fragile only after about 1500 h. A synergistic effect is observed when an antioxidant and an UV stabiliser are added. Indeed, in this case, the recycled material is not brittle even after more than 1700 h. These last results can be probab…

Effects of filler type and mixing method on the physical properties of a reinforced semirigid liquid crystal polymer

1996

Semirigid liquid crystalline polymers (LCPs) show some advantages with respect to rigid LCP: in particular lower processing temperatures, better compatibility with flexible thermoplastics, but also some disadvantages. Thermal resistance of rigid LCPs is much better and the maximum working temperature is, in general, very high. The thermomechanical properties can be improved by adding inorganic fillers. In this work processing, mechanical and thermomechanical properties of a filled semirigid liquid crystal copolyester are reported. Several inorganic fillers have been used in order to put in evidence the influence of shape and dimensions of the particles on the properties of the filled materi…

Magneto-Transport Results in SAM Based MTJs

2015

This chapter is dedicated to the description of the magneto-transport results obtained in LSMO/SAM/Co magnetic tunnel nanojunctions fabricated by nanoindentation lithography technique. We started by focusing on the study of LSMO/C12P/Co MTJs. This because C12P is a medium size alkyl chain: long enough to avoid short-circuits in the junction but short enough to give a device resistance in the order of few tens of MO and thus easier to measure. Next, we started to tune the molecule thickness from C10P to C18P (from 10 carbon atoms in the alkyl chain to 18). This allowed on one hand to validate our system by comparing the exponential increase of the junction resistance to the one reported in t…

The influence of mechanical damaging on the lifetime of positrons In ultrahigh-molecular polyethylene

2013

We study the influence of damaging of ultrahigh-molecular polyethylene [(PE-UHMW) Chirulen®1120] applied, among other materials, in the production of hip endoprostheses on the spectra of positrons lifetime in this material. Polyethylene samples were damaged by the impacts, rolling friction, and collisions with metal balls in a planetary mill. The changes in the parameters of the spectra of positrons lifetime related to the annihilation of orthopositronium (o-Ps) were analyzed depending on the mechanical energy transferred to the sample. On the basis of the Eldrup–Tao model, the changes in the radii of voids in which positroniums are formed and annihilated and the changes in the degree of fi…
