Sensor Fusion Localization and Navigation for Visually Impaired People
2018
In this paper, we present an innovative cyber physical system for indoor and outdoor localization and navigation, based on the joint utilization of dead-reckoning and computer vision techniques on a smartphone-centric tracking system. The system is explicitly designed for visually impaired people, but it can be easily generalized to other users, and it is built under the assumption that special reference signals, such as colored tapes, painted lines, or tactile paving, are deployed in the environment for guiding visually impaired users along pre-defined paths. Differently from previous works on localization, which are focused only on the utilization of inertial sensors integrated into the s…
A PCA-based clustering algorithm for the identification of stratiform and convective precipitation at the event scale: an application to the sub-hour…
2021
AbstractUnderstanding the structure of precipitation and its separation into stratiform and convective components is still today one of the important and interesting challenges for the scientific community. Despite this interest and the advances made in this field, the classification of rainfall into convective and stratiform components is still today not trivial. This study applies a novel criterion based on a clustering approach to analyze a high temporal resolution precipitation dataset collected for the period 2002–2018 over the Sicily (Italy). Starting from the rainfall events obtained from this dataset, the developed methodology makes it possible to classify the rainfall events into f…
Magnetic field emergence in mesogranular-sized exploding granules observed with SUNRISE/IMaX data
2011
We report on magnetic field emergences covering significant areas of exploding granules. The balloon-borne mission SUNRISE provided high spatial and temporal resolution images of the solar photosphere. Continuum images, longitudinal and transverse magnetic field maps and Dopplergrams obtained by IMaX onboard SUNRISE are analyzed by Local Correlation Traking (LCT), divergence calculation and time slices, Stokes inversions and numerical simulations are also employed. We characterize two mesogranular-scale exploding granules where $\sim$ 10$^{18}$ Mx of magnetic flux emerges. The emergence of weak unipolar longitudinal fields ($\sim$100 G) start with a single visible magnetic polarity, occupyi…
Dopant Contrast in Semiconductors as Interpretation Challenge at Imaging by Electrons
2007
Mechanisms responsible for the contrast between differently doped areas in semiconductors, which is observed in electron micrographs, is discussed as regards the key factors determining the sign and magnitude of the contrast. Experimental data obtained by means of the scanning electron microscope (SEM), scanning low energy electron microscope and photoelectron emission microscope are reviewed together with hints following from them for compilation of a model of the contrast mechanism.
Seamless downscaling of the ESA CCI soil moisture data at the daily scale with MODIS land products
2021
Abstract Spatial downscaling has recently become a crucial process in the regional application of coarse-resolution passive microwave surface soil moisture (SSM) products. Extensive gaps in auxiliary optical/thermal infrared observation data (mainly caused by cloud cover) and gaps in coarse-resolution passive microwave SSM data lead to spatiotemporal discontinuity in downscaled SSM maps, thereby limiting their applications. An improved downscaling method for the 25-km European Space Agency (ESA) Climate Change Initiative (CCI) SSM product was proposed to obtain daily seamless downscaled SSM series at a 1-km scale. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) Terra daily land su…
Planktonic foraminifera in ODP Hole 160-963A
2006
New faunal and floral records from Ocean Drilling Project Hole 963A, resolved at ?80-year spacing, provide evidence of suborbital scale climate variability in the central Mediterranean Sea throughout Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 5. Cold events in the central Mediterranean Sea, indicated by low abundances of warm species and high abundances of cold species, are also evident in a planktonic foraminifera paleoclimatic curve. They have been linked to NGRIP Greenland ice core “C” events and appear correlative with similar sub-millennial climate fluctuations identified in the North Atlantic region and in the Alboran Basin (Westernmost Mediterranean). Low-resolution benthic and planktonic Oxygen Iso…
Implementation of transition moments between excited states in the approximate coupled-cluster singles and doubles model
2008
An implementation of transition moments between excited states for the approximate coupled-cluster singles and doubles model (CC2) using the resolution of the identity (RI) approximation is reported. The accuracy of the RI approximation is analyzed for a testset of 7 molecules and 76 transitions. The RI error is found to be very small for both transition moments and oscillator strengths. Furthermore, the performance of the CC2 model in comparison with coupled-cluster singles and doubles (CCSD) is studied for 40 transitions of the same testset, yielding deviations of about 12% for the transition moments and 24% for the oscillator strengths. In addition, for 13 transitions of the testset the …
Force probe simulations using a hybrid scheme with virtual sites.
2017
Hybrid simulations, in which a part of the system is treated with atomistic resolution and the remainder is represented on a coarse-grained level, allow for fast sampling while using the accuracy of atomistic force fields. We apply a hybrid scheme to study the mechanical unfolding and refolding of a molecular complex using force probe molecular dynamics (FPMD) simulations. The degrees of freedom of the solvent molecules are treated in a coarse-grained manner while atomistic resolution is retained for the solute. The coupling between the solvent and the solute is provided using virtual sites. We test two different common coarse-graining procedures, the iterative Boltzmann inversion method an…
Serial versus parallel columns using isocratic elution: a comparison of multi-column approaches in mono-dimensional liquid chromatography.
2015
Abstract When a new separation problem is faced with high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), the analysis is addressed conventionally with a single column, trying to find out a single experimental condition aimed to resolve all compounds. However, in practice, the system selectivity may be insufficient to achieve full resolution. When a separation fails, the usual practice consists of introducing drastic changes in the chromatographic system (e.g. use of another column, solvent or pH). An alternative solution is taking benefit of the combined separation capability of two or more columns, which can be attained in multiple ways, such as diverse modalities of two-dimensional HPLC, or mo…
How “African” Is the African Peace and Security Architecture? Conceptual and Practical Constraints of Regional Security Cooperation in Africa
2012
ABSTRACT With the creation of the African Peace and Security Architecture in 2004, African states were aiming to assume the primary responsibility for peace and security on the continent and establish a structure to assemble the necessary financial and military means. However, despite the constant evocation of “African ownership,” it is non-African actors that call the tune and can define and drive African security. Based on a detailed juxtaposition of rhetoric and empirical evidence, this paper argues that significant conceptual and practical problems constrain the “Africanization” of African security and that it appears increasingly unlikely that the continent's states will be able to ach…
