Metabolism of Phenanthrene, Benz[a]anthracene, Benzo[a]pyrene, Chrysene and Benzo[c]phenanthrene by Eight cDNA-expressed Human and Rat Cytochromes P4…

1996

Abstract Phenanthrene, benz[a]anthracene, chrysene, benzo[c]phenanthrene, and benzo[a]pyrene have been studied for their regiospecific oxidation by five human (1A1, 1A2, 2A6, 2E1, 3A4) and three rat (1A1, 1A2, 2B1) CYP isoforms. All substrates are preferentially metabolized by CYP1A1 and CYP1A2 in human and rat. Other isoforms play a minor role if at all. Significant differences between human and rat CYP isoforms can be recognized with regard to the regiospecific oxidation of PAH. For instance, K-region oxidation is more pronounced in rat than in human CYP1A1 and CYP1A2. Hence, extrapolation from metabolism studies in rodents to human may be limited.

A numerical model of the cloud-topped planetary boundary-layer: Impact of aerosol particles on the radiative forcing of stratiform clouds

1997

In a numerical sensitivity study, the microphysical model of stratus MISTRA, is used to investigate the impact of aerosol particles on the evolution of stratiform clouds. Four model runs are presented, each for a different type of background aerosol. Two include aerosol particle size-distributions which are typical of marine and rural continental air masses; a third represents a mixture of marine and rural continental aerosol particles, and the fourth rural continental aerosol particles with a reduced solubility in water. The results show that the microphysical structure of layer clouds was strongly affected by the physico-chemical properties of the aerosol particles from which the cloud dr…

Impact of temperature on obstructive sleep apnoea in three different climate zones of Europe: Data from the European Sleep Apnoea Database (ESADA)

2021

Recent studies indicate that ambient temperature may modulate obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) severity. However, study results are contradictory warranting more investigation in this field. We analysed 19,293 patients of the European Sleep Apnoea Database (ESADA) cohort with restriction to the three predominant climate zones according to the Koppen-Geiger climate classification: Cfb (warm temperature, fully humid, warm summer), Csa (warm temperature, summer dry, hot summer), and Dfb (snow, fully humid, warm summer). Average outside temperature values were obtained and several hierarchical regression analyses were performed to investigate the impact of temperature on the apnea-hypopnea index …

Is periapical surgery follow-up with only two-dimensional radiographs reliable? A retrospective cohort type sensitivity study

2021

Background Two-dimensional (2D) radiographic techniques are commonly used for assessing lesion prognosis after endodontic surgery. The present retrospective cohort study analyzes the sensitivity and ability of different radiographic techniques in obtaining area and volume measurements of periapical lesions. Material and Methods Preoperative and follow-up (6-48 months) periapical and panoramic radiographs (index test) and cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images (reference standard) were selected from an endodontic microsurgery database. Sensitivity was analyzed independently by two examiners. The areas of the 2D radiographic images and CBCT volumes were studied using Itk-Snap software an…

Accuracy and Reliability of Cone-Beam Computed Tomography for Linear and Volumetric Mandibular Condyle Measurements. A Human Cadaver Study

2017

AbstractThe accuracy of Cone-Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) on linear and volumetric measurements on condyles has only been assessed on dry skulls. The aim of this study was to evaluate the reliability and accuracy of linear and volumetric measurements of mandibular condyles in the presence of soft tissues using CBCT. Six embalmed cadaver heads were used. CBCT scans were taken, followed by the extraction of the condyles. The water displacement technique was used to calculate the volumes of the condyles and three linear measurements were made using a digital caliper, these measurements serving as the gold standard. Surface models of the condyles were obtained using a 3D scanner, and superim…

Conservation implications of species–genetic diversity correlations

2014

Despite its importance for the long-term viability of populations and functioning of ecosystems, the genetic diversity of populations is seldom given explicit consideration in conservation prioritization. Research on the species–genetic diversity correlation (SGDC) suggests that species diversity within a community and intrapopulation genetic diversity are positively correlated, due to the parallel influences of environmental characteristics (area, connectivity, and environmental heterogeneity) on both levels of diversity. A positive locality scale SGDC (i.e. α-SGDC) thus provides potential for simultaneous conservation of both species diversity within a locality and intrapopulation genetic…

Aryl hydrocarbon receptor activation by cAMP vs. dioxin: divergent signaling pathways.

2005

Even before the first vertebrates appeared on our planet, the aryl hydrocarbon receptor ( AHR ) gene was present to carry out one or more critical life functions. The vertebrate AHR then evolved to take on functions of detecting and responding to certain classes of environmental toxicants. These environmental pollutants include polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (e.g., benzo[ a ]pyrene), polyhalogenated hydrocarbons, dibenzofurans, and the most potent small-molecular-weight toxicant known, 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo- p -dioxin (TCDD or dioxin). After binding of these ligands, the activated AHR translocates rapidly from the cytosol to the nucleus, where it forms a heterodimer with aryl hydroc…

Contingency plan for the intensive care services for the COVID-19 pandemic☆☆☆

2020

In January 2020, the Chinese authorities identified a new virus of the Coronaviridae family as the cause of several cases of pneumonia of unknown aetiology. The outbreak was initially confined to Wuhan City, but then spread outside Chinese borders. On 31 January 2020, the first case was declared in Spain. On 11 March 2020, The World Health Organization (WHO) declared the coronavirus outbreak a pandemic. On 16 March 2020, there were 139 countries affected. In this situation, the Scientific Societies SEMICYUC and SEEIUC, have decided to draw up this Contingency Plan to guide the response of the Intensive Care Services. The objectives of this plan are to estimate the magnitude of the problem a…

Brain and Breathing

2014

Breathing is an essential feature of living organisms, and control of breathing is a very complex topic in human physiology. Breathing is differently modulated under conditions of wakefulness and sleep, and ventilation decreases during sleep in normal subjects. In patients with respiratory diseases, sleep represents a very vulnerable condition, since gas exchange usually worsens, especially in REM sleep. Several types of respiratory events can occur during sleep, and knowledge of control of breathing is essential to understand their pathophysiology. This chapter summarizes the main characteristics of ventilation during both wakefulness and sleep, the differences found between genders, and t…

Rationale and evidence on the use of tocilizumab in COVID-19: a systematic review

2020

Abstract Background Tocilizumab is an IL-6 receptor-blocking agent proposed for the treatment of severe COVID-19. The aim of this systematic review was to describe the rationale for the use of tocilizumab for the treatment of COVID-19 and to summarize the available evidence regarding its efficacy and safety. Methods MEDLINE, PubMed, EMBASE, pre-print repositories (bioRxiv and medRxiv) and two trial Registries were searched for studies on the use of tocilizumab in COVID-19 or SARS-CoV-2 infection, viral pneumonia, and/or sepsis until 20th June 2020. Results We identified 3 indirect pre-clinical studies and 28 clinical studies including 5776 patients with COVID-19 (13 with a comparison group,…
