The purpose of this retrospective study was to compare the clinical significance of panoramic radiography (orthopantomography [OPTG]) and cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) for therapy planning of bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (BRONJ) by surgeons.Using standardized questionnaire, eight maxillofacial surgeons evaluated intraoral photographs of the clinical situation of 14 patients with BRONJ as well as the corresponding radiographic images (OPTG, CBCT). COOLING-INDUCED CONTRACTION OF TRACHEA ISOLATED FROM NORMAL AND SENSITIZED GUINEA-PIGS

Fast (−7°C/min) cooling of guinea-pig isolated trachea produced a rapidly developing, transient contraction followed by relaxation. Cooling-induced contraction was dependent on temperature (30, 20 or 10°C) and responses in trachea obtained from actively sensitized guinea pigs were significantly greater (20 and 10°-C) than those observed in normal trachea. Cooling to 20°C was selected for subsequent experiments. Pre-treatment with sufficient concentrations of atropine, clemastine, cromoglycate, indomethacin, or nordihydroguaiaretic acid did not depress contraction to cooling in either normal or sensitized trachea. Oxidation of tienilic acid by human cytochromes P-450 (CYP) 2C9, 2C18, 2C8 and 2C19 was studied using recombinant enzymes expressed in yeast. CYP 2C9 was the best catalyst for 5-hydroxylation of tienilic acid (K(m) = 5 +/- 1 microM, kcat = 1.7 +/- 0.2 min-1), 30-fold more potent in terms of kcat/K(m) than CYP 2C18 (K(m) = 150 +/- 15 microM, kcat = 1.8 +/- 0.2 min-1) and 300-fold more potent than CYP 2C8 (K(m) = 145 +/- 15 microM, kcat = 0.2 +/- 0.1 min-1). CYP 2C19 was unable to catalyze this hydroxylation under our experimental conditions. Emergence of tularemia in France: paradigm of the Burgundy region

International audience; We report three consecutive cases of tularemia occurring in Burgundy, France, a region previously considered not endemic for tularemia. The patients presented with varied and unspecific clinical manifestations. The epidemiological circumstances, especially the mode of contamination, were not particularly suggestive of tularemia. Serological diagnosis was delayed in two cases because of the lack of significant antibody titers at the time of admission. In contrast, a diagnosis could readily be obtained in all three cases by detection of Francisella tularensis DNA from clinical samples using PCR-based methods.
