Effects of bemiparin on airway responses to antigen in sensitized Brown-Norway rats.

Heparins have demonstrated activity in asthma. The effects of bemiparin, a low molecular weight heparin, were examined on antigen-induced responses in sensitized Brown-Norway rats. Effects of alkylxanthines on contractility of diaphragm fibres isolated from normal and sensitized guinea-pigs.

Abstract This study investigates the effects of alkylxanthines on twitch tension generated by electrical stimulation (supramaximal pulses, 0·2 ms duration, 1 Hz) of diaphragm muscle fibres isolated from normal and actively-sensitized guinea-pigs. Caffeine, theophylline and theobromine increased, in a concentration-dependent manner (50–500 μm), twitch tension in normal and sensitized diaphragm. Caffeine (500 μm) enhanced contractility to a greater extent than theophylline or theobromine. Twitch potentiation by caffeine (500 μm) was significantly greater in sensitized diaphragm. Comparison of bronchial and nasal allergen provocation in children and adolescents with bronchial asthma and house dust mite sensitization.

Background Bronchial allergen provocation (BAP) is an established tool for the diagnosis of allergy in patients with asthma, but its use is limited by the potential risk of severe asthmatic reactions. Nasal provocation testing (NPT) may be an alternative safe method and does not require sophisticated equipment. The cholinergic system in rat and human airways and the effects of glucocorticoids were investigated by assay of choline acetyltransferase activity, by high-pressure liquid chromatography measurement of acetylcholine, and by anti-choline acetyltransferase immunocyto-/histochemistry. Endurance training and antioxidants of lung

Mice and rats were adjusted to daily treadmill training programs, which were heavy enough to increase the oxidative capacity of skeletal muscles. Endurance training did not affect the activities of catalase and glutathione peroxidase and the concentration of vitamin E in the lungs of mice and rats. Thus increased ventilation and oxygen utilization induced by exercise training do not modify lung antioxidants, in contrast to hyperoxia and hypoxia.

Lethal Anaphylactic Reaction to Intravenous Gelatin in the Course of Surgery

Plasma volume expanders (PVEs) are widely used to increase circulating blood volume. Gelatins used as PVEs are heterogeneous mixtures of polypeptides, usually prepared by hydrolysis of bovine collagen containing large amounts of proline and hydroxyproline residues. It has been shown that gelatins can cause anaphylactic reactions. We describe the case of a 73-year-old man who during surgery for intestinal obstruction presented a lethal anaphylactic reaction after the administration of a PVE containing gelatin lysate.
