Humidity effects on gravitational settling and Brownian diffusion of atmospheric aerosol particles

1977

The dependency on relative humidity of the settling velocity of aerosol particles in stagnant air and of the diffusion coefficient due to Brownian motion of aerosol particles was computed for six aerosol types and different particles sizes in dry state. The computations are based (1) on mean bulk densities of dry aerosol particles obtained from measurements or from the knowledge of the chemical composition of the particles, (2) on micro-balance measurements of the water uptake per unit mass of dry aerosol substance versus water activity at thermodynamic equilibrium, and (3) on measurements of the equilibrium water activity of aqueous sea salt solutions. The results show a significant depend…

A Standardised Approach to the Biomechanical Evaluation of Tracheal Grafts

2021

[EN] The ideal tracheal substitute must have biomechanical properties comparable to the native trachea, but currently there is no standardised approach to evaluating these properties. Here we propose a novel method for evaluating and comparing the properties of tracheal substitutes, thus systematising both measurement and data curation. This system was tested by comparing native rabbit tracheas to frozen and decellularised specimens and determining the histological characteristics of those specimens. We performed radial compression tests on the anteroposterior tracheal axis and longitudinal axial tensile tests with the specimens anastomosed to the jaw connected to a measuring system. All ca…

Residual stresses in friction stir welded parts of complex geometry

2011

Residual stresses play a key role on the mechanics underlying the fatigue crack growth propagation of welded joints. Indeed, compressive residual stresses may induce a beneficial enhancement of the fatigue life under loading condition whereas tensile residual stresses may act to increase the stress distribution at crack tip, resulting in a life-threatening condition of the welded structure. In-process distortion and final geometry of welded joints are also affected by residual stresses. In this paper, the longitudinal residual stress distributions in friction stir welding (FSW) joints were investigated for butt and skin–stringer geometries, including lap and T configurations. To measure res…

Fluorescence spectroscopy for estimation of anticancer drug sonodestruction in vitro

2013

The effect of ultrasound exposure on bleomycin fluorescence and pharmacological properties is studied. Bleomycin was treated by ultrasound for 7 min. Bleomycin fluorescence was measured during ultrasound exposure by means of fiber-optic spectrometry. Cell colony test was used to evaluate blemycin cytotoxity before and after ultrasound exposure.

Neuromuscular and Chest Wall Diseases in Pregnancy

2009

Patients with severe respiratory muscle impairment, in particular when vital capa-city is below 60% of the predicted normal values, are often discouraged frombecoming pregnant for fear of respiratory complications and the need for tra-cheostomy and invasive mechanical ventilation (1). A growing fetus can impairthe functioning of weak diaphragms resulting in lower vital capacity and respira-tory reserve and impair cough function. In addition, there is increased oxygenconsumption and ventilation requirement. Complications in pregnancy and theneed for analgesics and anesthesia during labor and delivery can also cause orexacerbate ventilatory failure.Neuromuscular DiseasesNeuromuscular diseases…

Extubation strategies in neuro-intensive care unit patients and associations with outcomes

2020

Background Prolonged invasive ventilation is common in patients with severe brain injury. Information on optimal management of extubation and on the use of tracheostomy in these patients is scarce. International guidelines regarding the ventilator liberation and tracheostomy are currently lacking. Methods The aim of 'Extubation strategies in Neuro-Intensive care unit patients and associations with Outcomes' (ENIO) study is to describe current management of weaning from invasive ventilation, focusing on decisions on timing of tracheal extubation and tracheostomy in intensive care unit (ICU) patients with brain injury. We conducted a prospective, international, multi-centre observational stud…

Acceptance and validity of the methods used to implement a competency based medical education programme in an Intensive Care Department of a teaching…

2021

Abstract Objectives 1. To determine the satisfaction of tutors and residents with a specific methodology used to implement CoBaTrICE. 2. To determine the reliability and validity of the global rating scales designed ad hoc to assess the performance of the residents for training purposes. Design Prospective cohort study. Participants All the residents and tutors of the ICU Department of the Hospital Universitario y Politecnico la Fe de Valencia. Intervention CoBaTrICE implementation started in March 2016, it was based on: (1) Training the tutors in feedback techniques; (2) Performing multiple objective and structured work based assessments to achieve the competences of the program; and (3) T…

Random amplified polymorphic DNA assessment of diversity in western Mediterranean populations of the seagrass Posidonia oceanica.

2003

Posidonia oceanica is an endemic Mediterranean seagrass species that has often been assumed to contain low levels of genetic diversity. Random amplified polymorfic DNA (RAPD) markers were used to assess genetic diversity among five populations from three geographical regions (north, central, and south) of the western Mediterranean Sea. Stranded germinating seeds from one of the central populations were also included in the analysis. Forty-one putative genets were identified among 76 ramets based on 28 RAPD markers. Genotypic diversity strongly depended on the spatial structure, age, and maturity of the meadows. The lowest clonal diversity was found in the less structured and youngest prairi…
