A critical period for experience-dependent remodeling of adult-born neuron connectivity.

Neurogenesis in the dentate gyrus (DG) of the adult hippocampus is a process regulated by experience. To understand whether experience also modifies the connectivity of new neurons, we systematically investigated changes in their innervation following environmental enrichment (EE). We found that EE exposure between 2-6 weeks following neuron birth, rather than merely increasing the number of new neurons, profoundly affected their pattern of monosynaptic inputs. Both local innervation by interneurons and to even greater degree long-distance innervation by cortical neurons were markedly enhanced. Virulence genotype and nematode-killing properties of extra-intestinal Escherichia coli producing CTX-M beta-lactamases.

During a 24-month period, 33 extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing E. coli, including 14 CTX-M-producers, were isolated from urinary tract infections at N?s University Hospital, France. Involvement of endogenous nitric oxide in the inhibition by endotoxin and interleukin-1 beta of gastric acid secretion.

Administration of Escherichia coli endotoxin abolished the acid secretory response induced by a bolus injection of pentagastrin in the continuously perfused stomach of the anaesthetized rat. Likewise, acid secretion stimulated by the continuous intravenous perfusion of pentagastrin was inhibited by administration of interleukin-1 beta (IL-1 beta). In both cases pretreatment with NG-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME) but not dexamethasone or indomethacin substantially restored the secretory responses to pentagastrin. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of environmental enrichment on the neurogenesis and the extracellular concentrations of glutamate and GABA in the hippocampus of freely moving young and aged rats. Male Wistar rats of 2 (young) and 25 (old) months of age were housed during 8 weeks in an enriched environment; control rats were kept in individual plastic cages during that same period of time.
