Single-neutron orbits near 78 Ni: Spectroscopy of theN=49isotope 79 Zn

2015

Single-neutron states in the Z=30, N=49isotope 79Zn have been populated using the 78Zn(d,p)79Zn transfer reaction at REX-ISOLDE, CERN. The experimental setup allowed the combined detection of protons ejected in the reaction, and of γrays emitted by 79Zn. The analysis reveals that the lowest excited states populated in the reaction lie at approximately 1MeV of excitation, and involve neutron orbits above the N=50shell gap. From the analysis of γ-ray data and of proton angular distributions, characteristic of the amount of angular momentum transferred, a5/2+configuration was assigned to a state at 983keV. Comparison with large-scale-shell-model calculations supports a robust neutron N=50shell…

Correlation between Work Engagement and Burnout among Registered Nurses: an Italian hospital survey

2019

AIM: To investigate the correlation between work engagement and burnout among Italian nurses. INTRODUCTION: Work engagement is a protective factor against burnout. Both of them may be affected by the cultural and organizational features of the investigated population, which means that results cannot be generalized. In Italy studies to measure how they correlate have never been performed. METHODS: Monocentric and quantitative observational study. The Maslach Burnout Inventory and the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale were used on a convenience sample of 318 nurses from an Italian hospital to assess the burnout and work engagement levels and to measure the existing correlation between the two con…

Calibration of the PREdiction of DELIRium in ICu Patients (PRE-DELIRIC) Score in a Cohort of Critically Ill Patients: A Retrospective Cohort Study

2023

BACKGROUND: To predict delirium in intensive care unit (ICU) patients, the Prediction of Delirium in ICU Patients (PRE-DELIRIC) score may be used. This model may help nurses to predict delirium in high-risk ICU patients. OBJECTIVES: The aims of this study were to externally validate the PRE-DELIRIC model and to identify predictive factors and outcomes for ICU delirium. METHOD: All patients underwent delirium risk assessment by the PRE-DELIRIC model at admission. We used the Intensive Care Delirium Screening Check List to identify patients with delirium. The receiver operating characteristic curve measured discrimination capacity among patients with or without ICU delirium. Calibration abili…

How social network sites and other online intermediaries increase exposure to news

2020

Research has prominently assumed that social media and web portals that aggregate news restrict the diversity of content that users are exposed to by tailoring news diets toward the users’ preferences. In our empirical test of this argument, we apply a random-effects within–between model to two large representative datasets of individual web browsing histories. This approach allows us to better encapsulate the effects of social media and other intermediaries on news exposure. We find strong evidence that intermediaries foster more varied online news diets. The results call into question fears about the vanishing potential for incidental news exposure in digital media environments.

Attraction of egg-killing parasitoids toward induced plant volatiles in a multi-herbivore context

2015

In response to insect herbivory, plants emit volatile organic compounds which may act as indirect plant defenses by attracting natural enemies of the attacking herbivore. In nature, plants are often attacked by multiple herbivores, but the majority of studies which have investigated indirect plant defenses to date have focused on the recruitment of different parasitoid species in a single-herbivore context. Here, we report our investigation on the attraction of egg parasitoids of lepidopteran hosts (Trichogramma brassicae and T. evanescens) toward plant volatiles induced by different insect herbivores in olfactometer bioassays. We used a system consisting of a native crucifer, Brassica nigr…

Heredity and obesity-associated hypertension: impact of hormonal characteristics and left ventricular mass. J Hypertens

1995

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the influence of heredity on obesity-associated hypertension, we evaluated casual and 24-h blood pressure, left ventricular mass and some metabolic and hormonal measurements in normotensive obese subjects. DESIGN: Healthy, normotensive obese subjects (n = 81) with positive or negative family history of hypertension were studied. Both groups were also subdivided according to a positive or a negative family history of obesity. Accordingly, 45 obese subjects had a positive family history of hypertension, 25 of these having a positive (subgroup A) and 20 having a negative family history of obesity (subgroup B). The other 36 obese subjects had a negative family history…

Seawater carbonate chemistry and biogenic habitat shifts under long-term ocean acidification

2023

Experiments have shown that increasing dissolved CO2 concentrations (i.e. Ocean Acidification, OA) in marine ecosystems may act as nutrient for primary producers (e.g. fleshy algae) or a stressor for calcifying species (e.g., coralline algae, corals, molluscs). For the first time, rapid habitat dominance shifts and altered competitive replacement from a reef-forming to a non-reef-forming biogenic habitat were documented over one-year exposure to low pH/high CO2 through a transplant experiment off Vulcano Island CO2 seeps (NE Sicily, Italy). Ocean acidification decreased vermetid reefs complexity via a reduction in the reef-building species density, boosted canopy macroalgae and led to chang…

Seawater carbonate chemistry and fish communities properties off CO2 seeps in Japan

2020

Ocean acidification will likely change the structure and function of coastal marine ecosystems over coming decades. Volcanic carbon dioxide seeps generate dissolved CO2 and pH gradients that provide realistic insights into the direction and magnitude of these changes. Here, we used fish and benthic community surveys to assess the spatio-temporal dynamics of fish community properties off CO2 seeps in Japan. Adding to previous evidence from ocean acidification ecosystem studies conducted elsewhere, our findings documented shifts from calcified to non-calcified habitats with reduced benthic complexity. In addition, we found that such habitat transition led to decreased diversity of associated …
