DiseaseLinc: Disease Enrichment Analysis of Sets of Differentially Expressed LincRNAs

2021

Long intergenic non-coding RNAs (LincRNAs) are long RNAs that do not encode proteins. Functional evidence is lacking for most of them. Their biogenesis is not well-known, but it is thought that many lincRNAs originate from genomic duplication of coding material, resulting in pseudogenes, gene copies that lose their original function and can accumulate mutations. While most pseudogenes eventually stop producing a transcript and become erased by mutations, many of these pseudogene-based lincRNAs keep similarity to the parental gene from which they originated, possibly for functional reasons. For example, they can act as decoys for miRNAs targeting the parental gene. Enrichment analysis of fun…

Psicosi: integrazione della sintomatologia, ristrutturazione dell'Io, riorganizzazione del Sè

2015

clinical practice identifies the reactivation of reality testing as the most achievable and desirable aim in the healthcare-specialized treatment of psychosis. In summary, in the cases of psychotic onset and similar scenarios, a positive intervention is represented by those circumstances in wich the patient is able to regain his status quo ante the acute phase of the disorder. This phase, just to be clear, is the on throughout which the most representative symptoms, such as delusions and hallucinations, arise determining the dissociative state-. In addition, if during the reorganization of reality testing thethe patient is able to have a critical position relating to his acute state, and th…

Socially Critical Humor : Discussing Humor with Erich Fromm and Theodor W. Adorno

2017

This article brings Erich Fromm and Theodor W. Adorno back into dialogue by discussing the cultural phenomena of humor and laughter based on their theoretical writings. I argue that what is typically considered socially critical humor, like offensive jokes or harsh satire, often fails to meet the preconditions of criticism in the light of Adorno’s and Fromm’s thinking. Humor, to be socially critical, has to be life-affirmative and non-positional, and it has to challenge the limits of humor. It is also claimed that in this scope, humor cannot be instrumental.

Adherence to endocrine therapy in women with breast cancer: development and preliminary validation of the A-BET questionnaire

2022

Purpose. To develop an Italian tool that measures the therapy adherence of women with breast cancer undergoing treatment with oral endocrine therapy. Methods A two-phase study was conducted, which followed the guidelines of the European Statistical System for the development and validation of a questionnaire. In the first phase, the questionnaire was developed; in the second phase, a preliminary validation was carried out on patients with breast cancer undergoing treatment with oral hormonal therapies. Results In its final version, the questionnaire presents 6 main items which aim to investigate the level of adherence, the degree of awareness of the nature of the drug taken and the reasons …

Cognitive thought diary in supportive psychology for people undergoing radiotherapy: a feasibility study

2017

BAC KGROUND: Radiation therapy (RT ) has become one of the most widely-used and efficient treatments for cancer; nevertheless, people who undergo radiotherapy suffer the physical and psychological consequences of this stressful treatment, in addition to the psychosocial distress related to cancer. However, a Radiotherapy Unit is often a place where several patients crowd in from various hospitals with restricted timetables and, for logistic reasons, it is not easy to provide regular psychological sessions for each one. It is important to find a setting that allows us the involvement of the largest number of patients referred to the unit. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the feasibility a…

Orthotrichum mazimpakanum sp. nov. and O. anodon (Orthotrichaceae), two similar species from California

2011

Abstract Studies of herbarium samples and field surveys in Southern California during the fall of 2008 led to the discovery of several new collections of mosses lacking exostome teeth belonging to Orthotrichum Hedw. subgenus Pulchella (Schimp.) Vitt. Some of them are ascribable to O. anodon F. Lara, Garilleti & Mazimpaka even though they display a set of characters not noticed before, considerably broadening the morphological variability of this species and making necessary an updated description. Other materials, from scattered localities along a wide latitudinal range, correspond to a here described new species, Orthotrichum mazimpakanum Garilleti & F. Lara, differentiated by a set of una…

Orthotrichum anodon (Orthotrichaceae), a new species from California, and its relationships to otherOrthotrichawith puckered capsule mouths

2006

A new Orthotrichum species, O. anodon F. Lara, Garilleti & Mazimpaka, is described. The new taxon is included in subgenus Pulchella (Schimp.) Vitt, and is characterised by its immersed, cylindrical capsules, with eight short exothecial bands that constrict the capsule mouth when dry; the lack of exostome teeth; the endostome having 16 hyaline and papillose segments; and the leaves lingulate to ovate lanceolate, with obtuse apices. Its distinction from and relationships with similar species within the genus, are discussed.

External iliac artery pseudoaneurysm complicating renal transplantation

2009

Objective: To assess the etiology, management and outcome of iliac pseudoaneurysms following renal transplantation. Methods: Eleven patients who underwent repair between 1982 and 2007 were identified. Five (Group 1) presented pseudoaneurysm at the anastomosis of the donor renal and native iliac arteries, and six (Group 2) presented iliac pseudoaneurysm following transplant nephrectomy. Intraoperative cultures and immunohistochemical examinations were obtained from all surgical cases to determine the existence of a relationship between infection or transplant rejection and pseudoaneurysm formation. Results: Endovascular repair (EVR) was used to treat three patients, while eight patients unde…
