Quantitative detection of viable foodborne E. coli O157:H7, Listeria monocytogenes and Salmonella in fresh-cut vegetables combining propidium monoazi…

2012

Abstract The increase of foodborne outbreaks associated with fresh vegetables has highlighted the importance of developing rapid and specific methods for the detection and quantification of foodborne pathogens. In this sense, real-time PCR (qPCR) fulfills these requirements although it may detect dead cells. Recently, a potential strategy to specifically detect viable cells has been proposed relying on the use of DNA binding molecules as sample pretreatment previous to the qPCR. In this study propidium monoazide (PMA) and reagent D, combined with qPCR, were evaluated for the detection and quantification of viable Escherichia coli O157:H7, Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes. Initially, th…

Salmonella bongori Provides Insights into the Evolution of the Salmonellae

2011

The genus Salmonella contains two species, S. bongori and S. enterica. Compared to the well-studied S. enterica there is a marked lack of information regarding the genetic makeup and diversity of S. bongori. S. bongori has been found predominantly associated with cold-blooded animals, but it can infect humans. To define the phylogeny of this species, and compare it to S. enterica, we have sequenced 28 isolates representing most of the known diversity of S. bongori. This cross-species analysis allowed us to confidently differentiate ancestral functions from those acquired following speciation, which include both metabolic and virulence-associated capacities. We show that, although S. bongori…

The Postglacial Isotopic Record of Intermediate Water Connects Mediterranean Sapropels and Organic‐Rich Layers

2020

Carbon‐rich layers exist at both sides of the Mediterranean Sea sedimentary record and are called sapropels and organic rich layers (ORLs), respectively, in the eastern and western basins. They have different levels of organic carbon accumulation and seafloor oxygen deprivation. The most recent sapropel and ORL depositions have a different timing, approximately 10.8–6.1 and 14.5–9.0 ka, respectively. Here we investigate oxygen isotopic records of three foraminifera species that occupy different habitats within the Sicily Channel water column since ~12.0 ka, thus in the sill between the eastern and western Mediterranean basins. These data are ice volume corrected, to get information on water…

Strategies to exiting the COVID-19 lockdown for workplace and school: A scoping review

2021

Highlights • Epidemiological conditions should be monitored and enforced. • COVID-19 must be under control below thresholds of safeguards. • Testing, contact tracing, and isolation strategies are essential components to ease the lockdown. • The maintenance of social distancing measures is an overarching mitigation strategy. • The benefit gained from the implementation of social distancing was evident.

Students' Understanding of the Special Theory of Relativity and Design for a Guided Visit to a Science Museum

2009

International audience; This paper describes the design of teaching materials that are used as learning tools in school visits to a science museum. An exhibition on the A century of the Special Theory of Relativity, in the Kutxaespacio Science Museum, in San Sebastian (Spain), was used to design a visit for first year engineering students at the university and assess the learning which was achieved. The first part of the paper presents the teaching sequence which was designed to build a bridge between formal teaching and the exhibition visit. The second part analyses the potential of the exhibition and the aforementioned teaching sequence to influence the students' knowledge of three aspect…
