Ultrasonography and gastric emptying: evaluation in infants with gastroesophageal reflux.

We have applied ultrasonography to the evaluation of gastric emptying in children. Two different populations have been investigated: normal children and children with gastroesophageal reflux. All the patients were less than 6 months of age. The diagnosis of gastroesophageal reflux was defined by 24-h pH measurement. The technique, used to measure gastric emptying, is the one described by Bolondi et al. In this research we used the simplified method. All children had been submitted to the examination after 4-h fasting. The standard meal was the usual milk formula, 300 ml/m2 body surface area (BSA). Parvovirus B19-Associated Microvesicular Eruption

We report on a 3-year-old girl with a microvesicular generalized rash in whom primary infection by parvovirus B19 was demonstrated by seroconversion. To our knowledge, this is the first instance of an eruption arising from parvovirus B19 with this peculiar clinical pattern.

Local estrogen substitution has been shown to be more appropriate than any systemic application for the treatment of urogenital symptoms of hormone defiency. The efficacy, safety and acceptability of a new low-dose drug delivery system consisting of an estradiol-releasing silicone vaginal ring was studied in two multicenter trials. In an open-label comparative trial a total of 219 postmenopausal women were randomized to the estradiol-releasing vaginal ring or to estriol suppositories. Estrogens are involved in accretion of bone mass during puberty. Catechol-O-Methyltransferase (COMT) is involved in the degradation of estrogens. In this cross-sectional study we investigated associations between the COMT val158met polymorphism, which results in a 60-75% difference in enzyme activity between the val (high activity = H) and the met (low activity = L) variant, and skeletal phenotypes in 246 healthy pre/early pubertal girls. Effects of enzyme replacement therapy with agalsidase alfa on glomerular filtration rate in patients with Fabry disease: preliminary data

Progressive deposition of globotriaosylceramide results in severe complications involving the kidney, heart and brain in both hemizygous male and heterozygous female patients with Fabry disease. Analysis of renal data from FOS - the Fabry Outcome Survey - suggests that enzyme replacement therapy with agalsidase alfa can significantly improve renal function in patients with Fabry disease, at least in those with a mild decrease in glomerular filtration rate, and may also be able to slow down the natural decline in renal function in patients with a moderate reduction in glomerular filtration rate. Objective To study whether normal-weight obesity in childhood is associated with increased cardiometabolic risk in early adulthood. Methods This study assessed data for 236 girls followed from prepuberty to early adulthood. Growth chart data were obtained from birth to 18 years. Body composition was assessed by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry and cardiometabolic risk by calculating continuous clustered risk score (at ages 11, 14, and 18).
