Association between obesity and vulvar cancer recurrence: an analysis of the AGO-CaRE-1 study

2020

ObjectiveObesity is associated with worse survival and an increased risk of relapse in several malignancies. The influence of obesity on vulvar cancer recurrence has not been previously described. The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the association between obesity and tumor recurrence in patients with vulvar cancer.MethodsThis is an analysis of the AGO-CaRE-1 study. Patients diagnosed with squamous cell vulvar cancer (stage IB and higher), treated in 29 cancer centers between January 1998 and December 2008, were registered in a centralized database. The cohort was divided into two gropus depending on the body mass index (BMI) (<30 vs ≥30 kg/m²). Descriptive statistics, su…

Psychometric properties of the Brief Symptom Inventory-18 in a Spanish breast cancer sample

2007

Abstract Objective The objective of this work was to study the psychometric and structural properties of the Brief Symptom Inventory-18 (BSI-18) in a sample of breast cancer patients ( N =175). Methods Confirmatory factor analyses were conducted. Two models were tested: the theoretical model with the original structure (three-dimensional), and the empirical model (a four-factor structure) obtained through exploratory factor analysis initially performed by the authors of the BSI-18. Results The eligible structure was the original proposal consisting of three dimensions: somatization, depression, and anxiety scores. These measures also showed good internal consistency. Conclusion The results …

The CARe Burn Scale—Adult Form: Translation and linguistic validation into Finnish

2021

Abstract Background Burn injury can dramatically deteriorate health-related quality of life. Effective burn care may minimize the impact of the burn injury and ensure optimal functional outcome. This requires continuous improvement in burn care and assessment of treatment results. The aim of this study was to translate, culturally adapt and linguistically validate the CARe Burn Scale—Adult Form, a burn-specific patient-reported outcome measure, into Finnish. Methods The translation process followed the International Society for Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes Research guidelines consisting of forward and backward translations, pilot-testing and cognitive debriefing interviews of five burn pa…

Implantation is apparently unaffected by the dopamine agonist Cabergoline when administered to prevent ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome in women und…

2007

Background Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) is a result of ovarian overexpression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and its receptor 2 (VEGFR2). VEGF/VEGFR2 binding disrupts cellular junctions and increases vascular permeability (VP), a characteristic of OHSS, but enhances angiogenesis, which is a fundamental step in implantation. In animals, the dopamine agonist Cabergoline (Cb2) prevents VP without affecting angiogenesis. In humans, Cb2 averts OHSS, but a possible detrimental effect on angiogenesis and implantation has not been explored. A pilot study was designed to analyze whether or not Cb2 administration, as a procedure for preventing OHSS, affects the outcome of as…

Analysis of T-Lymphocyte Subsets After Phytohemagglutinin Stimulation in Normal and Type 1 Diabetic Mothers and Their Infants

1992

Our aim was to investigate the immunological status of diabetic pregnancy, which is an overlap of diabetic immunity abnormalities and the immunological modifications normally occurring during pregnancy. METHOD: We studied lymphocyte subpopulations and lymphokine production, after 96 h of phytohemagglutinin (PHA) stimulation, from normal and Type I diabetic pregnant women at delivery time and from the respective cord blood. RESULTS: Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) from both normal and Type I diabetic mothers showed an increase in CD8+ and a decrease in CD4+ cells compared to the respective cord blood mononuclear cells (CBMC). Moreover, Type I PBMC showed a lower number of “activate…

Cerebral and spinal MR-findings in patients with postrepair myelomeningocele

1990

In 114 patients with postrepair myelomeningocele MRI of the spine was performed. Tethered cord (89%) and associated malformations (syrinx, lipoma etc.) (33%) were the most important findings. Additional MRI scans of the head (44 patients) revealed numerous further anomalies. Arnold Chiari malformation was found in 76% of the patients (ACM I: 32%, ACM II: 44%). In the ACM II group compression of lower cranial nerves, brain stem, and cerebellum can lead to considerable neurologic symptoms. Therefore in patients with progressive neurologic dysfunction a complete investigation of the whole spine and brain is necessary. MRI proves to be the diagnostic procedure of choice in patients with dysraph…

Quality of Life in Women After Pelvic Exenteration for Gynecological Malignancies: A Multicentric Study

2018

Objectives This retrospective, multicentric study investigates quality-of-life issues and emotional distress in gynecological cancer survivors submitted to pelvic exenteration (PE). Methods The Global Health Status scale of European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) Core Quality of Life Questionnaire (QLQ-C30; the EORTC QLQ-CX24 (CX24), and EORTC QLQ-OV28 questionnaires were administered at least 12 months from surgery only in women with no evidence of further recurrence after PE. Statistical analysis was performed by the analysis of variance (for repeated measures. Results Ninety-six subjects affected by gynecological malignancies receiving PE were enrolled in the s…

Menstrual disorders and subfertility in Spanish hairdressers

2009

Abstract Objective Hairdressing is associated with adverse effects on reproductive health. This research investigates whether female hairdressers have increased risks of subfertility and menstrual disorders. Study design Cross sectional study. Participants were all female hairdressers below 50 years of age ( n  = 310) working in registered hairdressing salons in Alicante, Spain and a control group comprising female shop assistants and office workers ( n  =310). Menstrual disorders were defined as any of five menstrual cycle characteristics: short cycles, long cycles, irregular cycles, not experiencing a period for more than 6 weeks (missed period), and bleeding or spotting between periods (…

Prevalence of human papillomavirus types in women screened by cytology in Germany.

2007

Incidence and mortality rates of cervical cancer are higher in Germany than in other Western European countries. Type-specific human papillomavirus (HPV) distribution was investigated for the first time in Germany in an epidemiological study including 8,101 women. Women above the age of 30 years, self-referring for cervical cancer screening, were enrolled in two study centers in Hannover (Northern Germany) and Tubingen (Southern Germany). Participants were screened by the Pap smear and the hybrid capture 2 (HC2) test using the high-risk probe. All samples that were positive by the HC2 test were genotyped using the prototype PGMY09/11 PCR line blot assay. Most women in the study population h…

Temporal trends and determinants of peripartum hysterectomy in Lombardy, Northern Italy, 1996-2010.

2013

Purpose: To analyze the temporal trends of peripartum hysterectomy (PH) in the period 1996-2010 in Lombardy, Italy. Methods: Using data from the Regional Database, PH ratios/1,000 deliveries were calculated from 1996 to 2010, in strata of age and mode of delivery among women resident in Lombardy, Italy. PH cases were identified searching the database for the ICD-9 and ICD-10 codes for subtotal and total hysterectomy. PH ratios/1,000 deliveries in strata of age, mode of delivery and calendar year were computed. Poisson's regression analysis was used to test trend over time. Results: A total of 905 PH and 1,289,163 deliveries were recorded between 1996 and 2010. The overall PH ratio was 0.70/…
