225 Comparative analysis of patients with acute coronary and cerebrovascular syndromes from the national French hospitalisation heath care system dat…

2011

ObjectiveTo compare vascular risk factor profiles and early outcomes in all French patients hospitalized for either acute coronary (ACS), or cerebrovascular syndromes (CVS), or both, between 2005 and 2008.SettingAll French hospitals.DesignRetrospective analysis.Data sourcesNational database called “Hospital Discharge Diagnosis Records”.Main outcomes measuredNumber and annual rates, vascular risk factors, and early outcome of hospitalized patients for a unique stay for ACS or CVS or for both ACV and CVS in a 2-month time window.ResultsOver the 4-year study-period, 1,189,043 patients were hospitalized for CVS and/or ACS. Among these, 638,061 (53.7%) had CVS alone, 525,419 (44.3%) had ACS alon…

Exercising recommendations for paroxysmal AF in young and middle-aged athletes (PAFIYAMA) syndrome.

2017

We have recently described a new syndrome: strenuous endurance exercise-related atrial fibrillation (AF) under the acronym of ‘paroxysmal AF in young and middle-aged athletes’ (‘PAFIYAMA’). Provided that other risk factors for AF and underlying conditions have been excluded (1), the diagnostic criteria for this syndrome entail a number of conditions, classified as major and minor. An enhanced risk of AF has been clearly documented in endurance athletes (top-class, elite and recreational) (2-5), and such risk typically ranges between 1.2- to 15-fold compared to the general, sedentary population (the better cardiovascular fitness, the higher incidence of AF) (6-11). Anecdotally, the last auth…

Considerations on sand control in natural gas wells

2017

Mechanism of sand production in gas wells is complex and influenced by every operation performed into the well, starting from the opening of the production interval by drilling, and continuing with completion and putting into production as well as with the exploitation regime. Sand production along with fluids from gas reservoirs creates a series of potentially dangerous and costly problems. For selecting the most appropriate methods of sand-control all the data and information related to properties of reservoir rock, the history of sand production, the potential well flow rates as well as HSE and costs need to be evaluated. The conclusion of the authors is that the best results in sand con…

A Recent Advancement: Casing while Drilling – A Viable Alternative to Conventional Drilling

2021

Mankind’s increased requirement for and dependence on energy resources, including the resources resulting from discovery and development of new hydrocarbon commercial reservoirs involves the use of new technologies such as optimization of the drilling process by reducing the non-productive time, the costs and the risks. Casing while drilling involves elimination of classical drilling string by using the casing string both for transmission to the bit of the mechanical energy and for circulation of drilling fluid into the well. Casing while drilling, constantly improving over time, has proven an efficient method to reduce risks, especially those related to the presence of a conventional…

Casing while Drilling – a Viable Alternative to Conventional Drilling

2019

Mankind’s increased requirement for and dependence on energy resources, including the resources resulting from discovery and development of new hydrocarbon commercial reservoirs involves the use of new technologies such as optimization of the drilling process by reducing the non-productive time, the costs and the risks. Casing while drilling involves elimination of classical drilling string by using the casing string both for transmission to the bit of the mechanical energy and for circulation of drilling fluid into the well. Although there is a number of technical or perception barriers related to the use of casing drilling, the important benefits of this technology related to reduced dril…

The pathogenesis of glaucoma, a common neurodegenerative disease, involves an immunologic component. Changes in the natural autoantibody profile of glaucoma patients were detected, showing not only up-regulated but also down-regulated immunoreactivities. In recent studies we were able to demonstrate that the antibody changes have a large influence on protein profiles of neuroretinal cells. Furthermore we could demonstrate neuroprotective potential of one of the down-regulated antibodies (γ-synuclein antibody). Anti-GFAP antibody is another antibody found down-regulated in glaucoma patients. Since GFAP expression is intensified in glaucomatous retina, the aim of this study was to detect the …

An Aqueous Extract ofWithania somniferaRoot Inhibits Amyloid β Fibril FormationIn Vitro

2011

The ability of an aqueous extract of W. somnifera L. Dunal (Family: Solanaceae) roots to inhibit fibril formation by the amyloid-β peptide in vitro was investigated. W. somnifera is used extensively in traditional Ayurvedic medicine as a nerve tonic with reputed memory enhancing properties. Inhibition of fibrillogenesis measured by transmission electron microscopy and ThT fluorescence assay showed that an aqueous extract of W. somnifera strongly inhibited Aβ fibril formation in a concentration-dependent manner, when compared with control samples. These results suggest that the aqueous extract of W. somnifera root has an ability to inhibit the formation of mature amyloid-β fibrils in vitro, …

Treatment of patients with duodenal ulcer positive for helicobacter pylori infection: ranitidine or omeprazole associated with colloidal bismuth subc…

1996

Abstract This study evaluated treatment of patients affected with duodenal ulcer positive for Helicobacter pylori . We compared patients treated with ranitidine plus amoxicillin plus colloidal bismuth subcitrate (n = 20) with patients treated with omeprazole plus amoxicillin plus colloidal bismuth subcitrate (n = 20) with regard to: (1) healing of duodenal ulcer; (2) eradication of H pylori ; and (3) recurrence of ulcer. Baseline and follow-up for 24 months were performed through clinical, laboratory, and endoscopic tests. The ulcer healing rate was 95% in the ranitidine group and 100% in the omeprazole group; the H pylori eradication rate was 90% and 95%, respectively. During follow-up, on…

Appropriateness of oral anticoagulant therapy prescription and its associated factors in hospitalized older people with atrial fibrillation

2018

Aims Although oral anticoagulants (OACs) are effective in preventing stroke in older people with atrial fibrillation (AF), they are often underused in this particularly high-risk population. The aim of the present study was to assess the appropriateness of OAC prescription and its associated factors in hospitalized patients aged 65 years or older. Methods Data were obtained from the retrospective phase of Simulation-based Technologies to Improve the Appropriate Use of Oral Anticoagulants in Hospitalized Elderly Patients With Atrial Fibrillation (SIM-AF) study, held in 32 Italian internal medicine and geriatric wards. The appropriateness of OAC prescription was assessed, grouping patients in…
