Reciprocal vs nonreciprocal trade agreements: Which have been best to promote exports?

2019

The Doha Development Agenda recognizes the central role that international trade can play in the promotion of economic development. In fact, the increase of exports from developing countries to developed nations' markets has been considered a key element for developing countries to realize the potential benefits of globalization. Over the last decades, developed countries have provided preferential access to their markets to developing countries through nonreciprocal trade agreements. Moreover, developing countries have also participated in reciprocal trade agreements. This paper re-examines comparatively the effect of both kinds of trade agreements on exports from developing countries but …

Las imbricaciones políticas entre la participación ciudadana e internet

2019

In this article the author tries to show the direct relationships that are established between the possibilities offered by the Internet and a participatory improvement. Citizen participation is a basic element in anydemocratic construction, so using the tools available with the growth of the Internet is a crucial issue for democratic progress. Obviously the relationship with social networks is also widely discussed and studied, reflecting on whether the political advances involved are sufficient for better collective coexistence or if, on the contrary, it is a projection of apparent progress. Finally, the issue related to electronic voting is analyzed as a paradigm of online participatory …

"Czy dzieci powinny trafiać do sieci?” Prawne i kryminologiczne aspekty zjawiska sharentingu

2022

Ponadto wyrazili własny pogląd dotyczący zagrożeń, stanowiących możliwą przyczynę nowych form zachowań przestępczych w stosunku do dzieci. Zaprezentowane r…

Using Network Community Detection to Investigate the Psychopathy Levels of Subjects Condemned for Mafia Crimes

2014

The main objective of this study is to understand what are the psychopathy levels of subjects condemned for Mafia crimes. To this end we will investigate a set of 30 subjects condemned for Mafia crimes and imprisoned in the “Pagliarelli” jail of Palermo (Italy). We will test their psychopathy level by using the PCL-R test. Additionally we will also investigate some other sociological feature of these subjects. This will allow us to characterize these criminals in terms of some psychiatric or sociological features. Such statistical characterization will be performed by using tools and methodologies of Statistical Physics and Network Theory. We believe that the importance of our study is twof…

#MeToo in school: teachers’ and young learners’ lived experience of verbal sexual harassment as a pedagogical opportunity

2020

Based on a case study of verbal sexual harassment experienced by a young female teacher and her 17-year-old student in a Norwegian upper secondary school, this article addresses challenges and strengths of drawing upon negative experiences of ‘lived injustice’ in class, arguing that such experiences can serve as a resource for education about, through and for human rights. Complementing this case study, we discuss a survey we have conducted among secondary school students (N=382), concerning how young learners report being sexually harassed and how often they experience that an adult intervenes in the situation. Combining the theoretical framework of human rights education (HRE) and the con…

Transnational Organized Crime and European Union: Aspects and Problems

2014

The fight against criminal organizations and their ability to carry out illegal activities beyond the national borders has represented a “bridge head” in the European path towards the harmonization of criminal laws in the member states. After considering the role played by the harmonization of criminal law in the European Union treaties, the study underlines how the difficulty in defining the concept of transnational organized crime could result in an excessive European intervention. In order to avoid such a risk, it is useful to refer to other relevant international sources, like the 2000 Palermo UN Convention, and also to recent European documents on the matter (in particular, a Resolutio…

How the mind is easily hooked on musical imagery

2009

Recent studies show that nearly all people living in western societies are affected by involuntary musical imagery, or “earworms”. It has been suggested that prior exposure to music is an important predictor of this phenomenon. In comparison, cognitive psychologists use the concepts of recency (serial position) and the priming effect (brief exposure) to describe similar memory features. The aim of this study was to explore the dynamics of involuntary musical imagery in relation to these memory concepts. Two experiments and a novel experimental manipulation to induce the experience were designed to investigate the topic. The experiments utilized a modified musical image scanning task to cue …
