BIODEGRADAZIONE DEGLI IDROCARBURI: DALLE COMUNITÀ MICROBICHE MARINE AI SISTEMI READY TO USE PER IL BIORISANAMENTO
Crude oil is one of the major hazardous pollutants. A promising technology for the treatment of contaminated sites is based on biodegradation of oil pollutants by microbial populations. Several microorganisms are known to use hydrocarbons as carbon sources. In the marine environment, obligate hydrocarbonoclastic bacteria (BIC) have been defined as being ecologically important for the aerobic removal of hydrocarbons. Recent advances in microbial ecology make it possible to combine molecular and culture-dependent approaches to identify bacterial community at environmental sites. In this thesis a microbiological survey of the Priolo Bay (eastern coast of Sicily, Ionian Sea), a chronically poll…
Reuse and recycling in construction: novel photocatalytic nano-mortars from valorised industrial wastes
2021
Production of novel eco-composite nano-mortars for architectural finishing, designed to combat environmental pollution affecting building shells, is reported. Specimens consist of a natural hydraulic lime mortar matrix doped with various kinds of nanophotocatalysts, produced from valorized industrial wastes: TiO2-hexaferrite from Fe3O2, and Ti(SO4)2-hydroxyapatite from Atlantic codfish bones. Samples were characterized and their photocatalytic activity was evaluated. Analysis showed that industrial wastes may be usefully reused to produce a new generation of sustainable, cheap and multifunctional novel building materials.

(progetto) Requalification du centre historique. Benevent, Italie.
2007

Techno-economic analysis of integrated processes for the treatment and valorisation of neutral coal mine effluents
2020
Abstract The disposal of highly-concentrated neutral coal mine effluents into the environment constitutes a severe threat to the natural ecosystem. This work proposes and compares five novel treatment chains to purify the effluent and recover raw materials. The chains present different combinations of pre-treatment and concentration technologies. In all cases, the solution sent to the concentration step is concentrated up to saturation to recover water and sodium chloride. Concerning the technical performances, the treatment chains are compared in terms of total energy demand and salt recovery. Furthermore, the economic feasibility assessment is performed via a novel global parameter, i.e. …
Influence of Operational Strategies for the Recovery of Magnesium Hydroxide from Brines at a Pilot Scale
2022
The continuous depletion of minerals caused by land mining and the increase in their demand have pushed the development of novel sustainable technological processes for mineral recovery from unconventional sources. In this context, magnesium (Mg) has gained considerable attention for its peculiar properties and high relevance of its compounds, such as magnesium hydroxide, Mg(OH)2. In the present work, the influence of several operating conditions on the Mg(OH)2 precipitation process was thoroughly investigated by adopting a novel multiple feed-plug flow reactor. The influence of (i) initial Mg2+ concentrations in the feed stream; (ii) brine and alkaline flow rates; and (iii) the product rec…
