The roll out of Anti-Retroviral Therapy across Sub-Saharan Africa has given rise to a new generation of adolescents that previously would not have survived into their teen years. The aim of this research is to give voice to these young people, specifically HIV positive students, in the rural, post-conflict area of Katakwi, Uganda. Some very low death rate countries such as Eastern Asia, Central Europe, or the Balkans have a common feature of eating large quantities of fermented foods. Although biases exist when examining ecological studies, fermented vegetables or cabbage have been associated with low death rates in European countries. The in vitro experiments to characterize P-glycoprotein's (P-gp) function and to decrease its effects have led to a variety of strategies such as addition of competitors or supplementation of the medium with oligonucleotides complementary to the 5'-end of the MDR1-mRNA. ABSTRACT Citrate fermentation by Escherichia coli requires the function of the citrate/succinate antiporter CitT ( citT gene) and of citrate lyase ( citCDEFXG genes). Earlier experiments suggested that the two-component system CitA/CitB, consisting of the membrane-bound sensor kinase CitA and the response regulator CitB, stimulates the expression of the genes in the presence of citrate, similarly to CitA/CitB of Klebsiella pneumoniae . Acid sensitivity of neomycin-resistant mutants ofOenococcus oeni: a relationship between reduction of ATPase activity and lack of malolactic activity

Mutants of Oenococcus oeni were isolated as spontaneous neomycin-resistant mutants. Three of these mutants harbored a significantly reduced ATPase activity that represented 50% of that of the wild-type strain. Their growth rates were also impaired at pH 5.3 (46-86% of the wild-type level). However, the profiles of sugar consumption appeared identical to those of the parental strain. At pH 3.2, all the mutant strains failed to grow and a drastic decrease in viability was observed after an acid shock. Surprisingly, all the isolated mutants were devoid of malolactic activity.
